    Thanks! It is very interesting how each country and culture has its own mindset towards money. We've definitely picked up some ideas for the financial independence movement, but also prioritise what we spend money on based on both of our cultures and Europe.

    We want too... but Ireland's months long lockdown and other personal events made our spending at bit chaotic including my account getting hacked so we have to really sit down and calculate more relatable numbers vs. what we did spend... or maybe how much prices increased.

    If you can afford to we think it's a good idea. We've chatted with a few people who came to Ireland on holiday and then decided it's somewhere they would like to move to. It's a good idea especially, if you want to live somewhere other than Dublin.

    Thanks for all the information. In my research about money transfers I read that using a third party money transfer company was cheaper than allowing your bank to do this. Have you looked into this? Do you have to pay for a tv license if you don't have a tv but stream on iPad and laptop? I am finding conflicting information on this. Our situation is very different from yours and some others as we are retired and will not be seeking jobs and our budgeting will look a bit different. Also, we will live outside of Dublin so that will help on the rent. Stay well :-).

    Hi Kate, We have heard of some third party money transfers. I've used one once for a smaller amount late last year, with Xoom. That was a Ireland to US transfer. I haven't tried it with Barbados yet. So I'll try it next time. We don't have a TV either. Since 2019, we were hearing that there would be a change of laws to including streaming devices, but we've only read that if it's a device capable of receiving TV. We think that because we have an account with Virgin Media only for internet. But because they do TV, Broadband packages as well., is how we assumed we have TV and got the letter. We haven't disputed it, because we wanted to use it as a proof of address as well for a residence permit. Keep safe as well!

    @@kates.441 Currently you dont have to pay TV licence tax if you dont have a TV. The confusion is generated by RTE and the government as its an important part of their gravy train. They will still send letters and call to your door but you can ignore this as the law is on your side.

    Why €84 pm on health insurance? As tax payers you are entitled to the free health care service(€100 for initial hospital visit when not referred by a GP). Physiotherapy is included in this service after a short waiting list time of about 5 weeks. You dont have to pay TV licence tax if you dont have a TV. Make sure there isnt an old satellite dish outside though.

  • @WineAndRum

    @WineAndRum

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'd file this under personal preference. I prefer to access healthcare as soon as possible. E.g. with the physio, that'd be 5 weeks of pain and being unable to work properly, I was on the mend already by then. Definitely, for the TV Licence.

  • @jondo12

    @@WineAndRum For most medical conditions you can afford to wait. If its urgent then it will be treated as such by health service. There is the option to go privately to a physio therapist for about €80 per visit. I understand its your preference but only make this decision if you often need health care. Sometimes having heath insurance is no advantage or you might still have to pay a certain amount. €84pm is a lot for people who want to save money and it sounds like you were pressured into it by your company or colleagues.

  • @WineAndRum

    @WineAndRum

    Without going into my health history, I have had a situation where health insurance was able to reduce the cost by a couple thousand. Also, all decisions related to my health and comfort are my own. Always put yourself before a job, every time. And I agree, in most cases there is no real advantage or people end up paying just as much as they put in. It's a lot for people trying to save and so fair play that to not pay it monthly. I'm currently living in a place I wasn't born in and still learning. Expats, immigrants etc. will always overpay or utilise somethings that are necessary. This is one of those things, who knows one day I might decide the public health system is enough.

    What salary do you feel is needed to live solo in a one/two bedroom apartment in Dublin?

  • @WineAndRum

    @WineAndRum

    3 жыл бұрын

    Difficult question as this feels like it's changing every few months. We're working on some spreadsheets to help answer this question more thoroughly. But until then... 1 bedroom rents are about 1300-1600 now, and two bedroom apartments closer to 2000 and above. Salary gross over €45k, the higher the better. Rent I bet easily takes 50% plus of people's salaries. We would both need to get higher salaries if we were to live like we do as a couple, as solo.

    TV Licence folk are relentless! You could set up a tent in a middle of a bog and they'd drone drop a letter to you asking if you have a battery operated TV inside your tent! The Wine's on Tesco that's the €15/mo. Mine's Three on €20/mo. I use the leftover pre-paid to make calls to the relatives not on Whatsapp etc. in the Caribbean every couple months. Coincidentally, I stayed on Three to make use of discounts for cinema tickets but... I wouldn't trust our track record with going to the cinema and a subscription. If we make it thrice during a year to a cinema that's plenty!
