I remember DW fandom in the 90s really having it in for his run, largely based on negative reviews in the mags and such; the BBC, knowing about this, held off on releasing many of his eps because they figured they'd sell poorly. Until finally they'd put out just about everything else, so finally they just scraped the bottom of the barrel...Only for fans, seeing his eps with fresh eyes after so long, to surprisingly respond very fondly to them! Don't get me wrong, much about those eps did, in fact, suck, but his portrayal of the Doctor went over a LOT better now, as fans discovered that he was nowhere as abrasive and unlikable as they'd remembered...

  • @tomnorton4277

    @tomnorton4277

John Hurt doesn't get enough respect for his performance as the Doctor. That might be partially because he was already a legendary actor before Doctor Who but when he was cast as the Doctor, I hadn't seen him fully flex his acting chops onscreen. I'd heard him in a few voice acting roles (Kilgharrah and Woundwort were awesome) and seen his cameos in V for Vendetta and Harry Potter but voice acting is easier than physical acting because you don't need to worry about getting your expressions and body language right and the physical roles I've seen Hurt in didn't ask too much of him. Because I was going in without a great deal of knowledge about his career outside of everybody hyping him up as one of the greatest actors of his day, I was pleased to see that John Hurt's reputation had not been exaggerated. He really was one of the best of the best because he was under more pressure than any actor in the history of Doctor Who, with only Patrick Troughton and Matt Smith coming close, and he still delivered in spades. A lesser actor like Peter Capaldi or even Matt Smith would have buckled under the weight of being 1) the oldest Doctor ever, 2) a last minute addition to the 50th anniversary, 3) in danger of being upstaged by the 3 most popular Doctors of all time (yes, the Curator counts) and 4) not given enough time to fully flesh out his incarnation and grow comfortable in the role. Hurt had one shot to get it right and he hit the bullseye dead centre.

Christopher Eccleston’s departure was actually intimated before his first episode was aired. In a BBC Radio 2 documentary (I can’t remember the date it was broadcast, but it was before his first episode) Chris was interviewed. The presenter asked “And are you in it for the long run?” Chris replied “I’ve done the long run”. At the time I took this to be an admission that he wouldn’t be doing a second series - it was in the past tense. I have always wondered why no-one else picked this up.

I feel like the thing that makes his announcement so great is the fact that Capaldi is such a great fan of the show, he brought so much Doctor energy with him immediately and that’s what made this live broadcast work. While others, in my opinion, had to have some time for them to get into the role, you know, and for the fans to get used to them.

Trouble is, Peter Capaldi went too far in Season 8. I barely saw the Doctor at all throughout that season and I almost think of him as being the Valeyard instead. Now that I've actually seen some of Michael Jayston's performance, I think it was a huge missed opportunity to not bring him back and use him to emphasise how far the Doctor fell after Capaldi took over. The Valeyard could have been hanging out in Missy's Nethersphere because he's an amalgamation of the Doctor instead of a full regeneration - this would also explain why Missy was so desperate to be friends with the Doctor again - then at the end of Season 8, he escapes from the Nethersphere and goes back to confront Colin Baker.

@@plantainsame2049 Well it felt like a villain going through a redemption arc. That's not how the Doctor was supposed to come across. John Hurt, Christopher Ecclestone, William Hartnell and even Colin Baker were basically doing the same character arc and none of them came across as outright villainous. Ecclestone was, to quote Jacki Tyler, "all charm and smiles" when he wasn't brooding about the Time War. Hurt could actually get away with coming across as evil since he was IN the Time War but there wasn't a single wicked bone in his body. Hartnell changed his performance during the reshoots of An Unearthly Child to stop the Doctor from coming across as an outright terrible person. And Baker, even after strangling her in a fit of post regeneration paranoia, instinctively tried to rush to Peri's aid when he realised she was in danger. His immediate reaction was "I must go to her! I must save her!" and that was in his first story, before he started softening up. Meanwhile, Peter Capaldi was totally fine with throwing Clara under the bus, expected her to be okay with it because in his sociopathic mind he was "respecting" her (Peter Capaldi didn't even sound sincere when he said that), and even had the audacity to lecture Clara about disloyalty in the most self-righteous and hypocritical rant I've ever heard from the Doctor after she'd not only lost her boyfriend, but had also been putting up with the Doctor's shit for most of the season. And there was no sense of introspection or self-awareness in Peter Capaldi's performance. Every time he tried to be introspective, he came across as a shitty man trying to pretend that he's not a shitty man so that the only person who puts any effort into supporting him doesn't leave. The most obvious display of this is that Capaldi was constantly projecting his issues onto Clara, whether it's a life or death situation or petty shit like Matt Smith regenerating into an ugly git with no self-esteem, and expecting her to either sort them out or validate his behaviour. It was like watching an abusive relationship. If I were in Clara's place, I would have told Peter Capaldi to get fucked halfway through his first season. I might have even gone out of my way to murder him in the hopes that he'd regenerate into somebody halfway tolerable. The "Am I a good man?" arc was supposed to come across as a good man questioning himself whilst making genuine mistakes. It wasn't supposed to come across as a terrible man making calculated decisions to be a shitty person and having to learn basic decency from scratch.

The Doctor was SO fucking self-righteous, hypocritical and preachy, lecturing Clara about doing shit that's totally fine when HE does it and even gaslighting her with "cut out the whining" after he'd been whining for the entire scene while she let him vent without complaint, that I would have happily watched her push him into the volcano. And that was because of Peter Capaldi's performance. That scene could have had me siding with the Doctor is a less obnoxious actor was playing him. For example, the Doctor should have said "cut out the whining" to himself because Clara wasn't the one whining. She was actually being the mature one because she said it was "absolutely fair enough" if he kicked her out.

Peter Capaldi’s anxiousness, first doctor fanfare, and comment that plying the Doctor “won’t be easy because he hasn’t played the Doctor since he was nine” are all so adorable and lovely. I’ve always seen him as someone who was very honored to be in that role and humble and appreciative to the fans for welcoming and accepting him. It’s also a really sad watch to see when they gave him the Sonic Screwdriver prop on the set of “Twice Upon a Time” and he starts crying.

Peter Capaldi's better as a Doctor Who fan than as the Doctor himself. His sheer terror of playing his childhood hero came through in his performance so he had none of the confidence, power or charisma that the Doctor's supposed to have. Instead, he overcompensated by playing him as a sociopathic arsehole and hiding behind self-righteous speeches which, until The Zygon Inversion where he actually had something worthwhile to say, came across as a man desperately trying to pretend he's more powerful, important, knowledgable and experienced than he actually is. For all the grey hair on Peter Capaldi's head, I almost never believed he had lived for thousands of years. Matt Smith could convey how ancient the Doctor was with a single glance. Hiring a lifelong fan worked with David Tennant but that was lighting in a bottle. Clearly, Steven Moffat hoped it would strike twice but he overestimated Peter Capaldi's abilities.

Think about it, Troughton having to follow up with one of the weirdest plot devices ever, Pertwee's Manning's and Delgado's relationship, Pertwee's and Troughton's friendship/rivalry, Tom Baker's drama on sets, Davidson following up the most successful run of the show so far, mistreatment of Colin and ending with McCoy having to be the final doctor. I'd watch it

I know it's extremely unlikely, But I would personally love it if we could make it to the centenary special... and still not know who 14 is until Jodie regenerates. I just think that'd great. The only way they could have made it greater would have been if they didn't announce Jodie's departure, so when she Regenerates, it's a complete surprise. I don’t think the Troughton Rule needs to be followed anymore. When Troughton did it, the show was airing 40+ episodes a year with a very brief break, so it was easier to buy. Now, each doctor only has 10-12 episodes a season every eighteen months. They’re not in enough episodes for us to get to know them as well. I think five seasons would be a better choice now.

While I think Tennant’s surprise award acceptance announcement was the best departure announcement. I personally think they’re going to try another John Hurt for the next one and not tell us who Jodie’s successor is until the regeneration actually happens. I think this because of how long it has been without an announcement and because the latests episode’s next time trailer showed Jodie starting to regenerate which implies they may have already filmed the change over and know who their next Doctor will be.

What if: in Jodie's final special, as she regenerates, and there's all the yellow energy, the camera pans away and the new Doctor arrives but off-screen (!) with an indistinct sigh, an exhale of air. So we don't know who it is or even if they're a man or a woman (!) And we have to wait until 2023's Season 14 to see the new Doctor for the first time!

Loved this trip down memory lane. I don't know if this helps but Sylvester McCoy revealed Paul McGann as the Doctor at a convention in late 1995, I think. This bit of information was then reported in a monthly fanzine called Time Brains 2013 in Sydney, Australia. I don't have the copy, but it was so early that the following issue the announcement was retracted as nothing could be found to confirm it. Then the issue after that it was confirmed again when the official news reports started rolling in.

I only vaguely recall pre-Matt Smith announcements, those memories, like the Paul McGann announcement, are lost to time. My absolute ideal way to announce a new Doctor would be like War and Fugitive Doctor, in universe as it happens. I know that's pretty unlikely to happen what with the constant threat of leaks but as a fan that would be the ultimate reveal - I remember that feeling when 10 got shot by a Dalek and started regenerating, I looked across at my brother (also a Whovian) and we were dumbfounded; it turned out to be fake but that was very exciting. I do remember the announcements of 12 and 13, being the most recent, and at the time I thought the whole studio thing with Capaldi was a bit cringey - more the fault of the way it was presented rather than Peter himself. So my second choice would be similar to Whittaker's announcement, that really beautifully shot, mysterious piece that revealed the new Doctor - no audience whooping and clapping, no daft presenters asking how they feel being the 'new Doctor Who' 🤦‍♀ just calm and in the Whoniverse.

I feel like that was partially Peter Capaldi's fault. I loved the stories for the most part. There were a few duds like Sleep No More and In The Forest of the Night and the Lake two parter in Season 9 was forgettable aside from one cute moment where the Doctor said "Should I stop now?" and Clara replied "Please do" but for the most part, I think the criticisms of bad writing were blown WAY out of proportion during Capaldi's era. My biggest problem with it was Capaldi himself. Every time he was onscreen in Season 8, he was tolerable at best and infuriating at worst, portraying the Doctor as far too sociopathic for me to see him as a legitimate incarnation until Season 9. And even in Season 9, it was still an uphill battle for Capaldi to win me over, to the point where I didn't care about his suffering in Heaven Sent because I wanted Clara to come back for MY sake, not his. Every other sociopathic Doctor aside from William Hartnell, who was the first and could therefore get away with not fully figuring out the character, had something to remind you that they're an alien. Colin Baker had his ridiculous costume, Sylvester McCoy showed off clownish behaviour and John Hurt, supposedly the darkest Doctor, wasn't sociopathic at all, at least during his onscreen appearances. His shame was based more on how he viewed HIMSELF than what was shown of his Doctor's personality. Peter Capaldi not only lacked John Hurt's self-awareness but played the Doctor's sociopathy so straight that I almost wish he'd been playing the Valeyard instead. It wasn't like watching an alien who genuinely doesn't understand humanity, which was something that Matt Smith could pull off in his sleep. It was like watching a misanthropic human who fully understands humanity and not only resents us but sees us as insects to be played with while he hides behind being "socially awkward" (sound familiar?) as an excuse for his behaviour. Trust me, I'm on the autism spectrum, so I know what social awkwardness should look like - for example, I have trouble maintaining eye contact and a habit of walking with my hands either folded or behind my back - and it doesn't look like what Peter Capaldi was doing. Matt Smith on the other hand could absolutely pull off an autistic and/or socially awkward person. Another thing that keeps getting overlooked is that Capaldi was READY for Clara's betrayal in Dark Water. That means one of two things about his Doctor's personality. Either he's insanely paranoid about the woman who had been saving him for centuries without him noticing (You're welcome, Mr "You can't see me"). Or he was deliberately pushing Clara to her breaking point and had his backup plan in place for when she snapped. To be fair, this part actually can be blamed on the writing to some extent but it wasn't helped by the fact that Capaldi spent most of Season 8 being a complete dick to Clara anyway. We'd already solved the "what are you? A trick? A trap?" thing with Matt Smith, so the only somewhat reasonable excuse for Capaldi being a shitbag to Clara was the VERY vague idea of "the woman in the shop". The Doctor had absolutely no way of knowing that she was his oldest enemy and Clara had already proven her loyalty in both her own life and in the lives of all her echoes. And that's another thing. Outside of a throwaway moment in Day of the Doctor where Clara confirms that she remembers "a bit" of her other lives, the fact that she had countless echoes running around the universe was never brought up again. To Season 9's credit, it called back to Oswin by putting Clara into a Dalek in The Witches Familiar and I actually couldn't tell if the waitress Clara in Hell Bent was an echo or the real Clara until the diner was revealed to be her TARDIS but the sheer lack of gratitude from the Doctor for everything Clara did for him made me dislike him even more. Now let's talk about when Capaldi WASN'T being the Valeyard. In Season 8, he was trying to juggle far too many Doctors at once and he just doesn't have the range to pull that off, which is most notable when he's working with a script that seemed to be written with Matt Smith in mind. For example, if Matt Smith or Patrick Troughton got into a sword and spoon fight with Robin Hood, they'd treat it like the most normal thing in the world but Capaldi wasn't in his comfort zone in that episode. He also didn't have the mischievous, schoolboy like playfulness that William Hartnell could pull off when he wasn't being a grumpy old asshole. And no, Clara saying "Top of the class" in Into the Dalek doesn't change that. If Hartnell were playing the Doctor when she said that, I could buy that he actually needed to be taught a lesson about the potential of a good and/or redeemed Dalek because 1) Hartnell could bring some youth to the Doctor, something that was also one of the best parts of David Bradley's portrayal (just look at his eyes when he stammers "W-what was that?" and tell me that's not a young man in an old man's body) and 2) Hartnell was the Doctor long before the idea of good Daleks was explored with Dalek Sec, Dalek Caan and Oswin. Capaldi's Doctor had seen 2 redeemed Daleks and 1 who was never evil in the first place, so he absolutely knew that redeeming Rusty was possible. To be fair, I think even Laurence Olivier would be stretching himself too thin if he tried to be every Doctor at once on top of being a new Doctor at the same time but Capaldi's no Olivier, so even attempting to do it was a doomed endeavour. To Capaldi's credit, he got his act together in Season 9 but I wouldn't have made it that far if I didn't care so much about Clara. People keep trying to deflect blame onto either her or the writing but how many considered the possibility that Capaldi himself was the problem? John Hurt was a better Doctor in a single episode than he was in his entire debut season and Hurt was under FAR more pressure than Capaldi was.

A really great video! Thanks for reminding me about that DW confidential special, I'd completely forgotten it actually went out. Brought back so many memories of that period when everything about the show such as the logo etc changed. As a 9-year-old it was kind of scary but exciting!

I haven't seen Jodie's reveal before. Love it. She got me back into it, after being away from it from series 2 onwards. Hope I like the next one.

I must have been about 6/7 in 2005 so I was completely unaware 9 was going to regenerate. In fact, I didn't even know what regeneration was. The Doctor just straight up died in front of me and I sobbed for a week. If they can keep the reveal of the 14th Doctor until the regeneration and recreate that level of pure shock I would be overjoyed

thank you a thousand times for this video. This is something we all need to know and remember. I watched the very first episode of Doctor Who back in 1963 and have watched every episode since then. It's always hard for me to even think about which one is my favorite doctor, because I love each and every one of them. Christopher Eccleston and Colin Baker were treated very shabbily ... I hope the network has learned from this. My favorite first episode of the doctor was Matt Smith as the 11th doctor. Again thank you so much for taking the time to dig up all this information and post it!

Thanks so much for all the details on each Doctor's departure! I can totally sympathize with how Tennant's departure announcement had fans cheering one moment (since he was coming back for the special) and lamenting the next (saying he was leaving the show). I'm thinking that they'll either announce it after the Men's finals again like last time, or do it a little bit earlier, like mid-May. The last few Doctors seemed to have a 4-6 month gap between reveal and episode airing, and we're about 6 months from the special's premiere at the moment.

Colin Bakers tenure remains a tragedy. He was as much a fan as Tenant and Capaldi and he had just started to really settled in when they petformed thst dick move on him. I give thanks to Big Finish for giving him his dues and treating him with the respect he deserved.

Hartnell's involvement was announced a little earlier in Kinematograph magazine 24/10/1963. Also the photoshoot you feature in relationship to the press launch actually comes from a year later marking the first sale of the program to Canada. The series press launch itself only featured Hartnell, Ford and Lambert.
