I feel you’ve got the lineup spot on there Dave. However, will Scott Mctominay fit a team which is really intricate in passing and also look to dominate the other team with total football? I don’t think it suits him. Nevertheless, great video!

Instead of mctominay I would probably play donny he’s just more quality. Or maybe because ralf ragnick will come in and implement gegenpress instead of a back three we can play with a back two of varane and maguire while inverting lindelof and shaw and then playing another attacker in cavani as a false forward whilst still having pogba and bruno going forward only problem with this is when we switch to defensive positions there wouldn’t be enough players to defend for this pogba and bruno will have to improve defensively a lot also instead of lindelof we could buy a cdm play him on rb whilst inverting him still bruno and pogba will have to defend

heres an idea: Mctominay in the RB spot over Lindelof. It allows him to drop back as that right sided CB in possession, even finding space to push forward if needed which he loves to do from that deep position. Then defensively, he's active and athletic enough to cover down the flanks and progress the ball up to the midfield. Not ideal, but it would be very interesting to see how ten Hag would set this team up. I wonder if he would go in for Mazraoui in the summer?

@@noahlaliberty6126 thats his biggest issue by far. He just coasts through the central areas, with no real reason or thought behind why he's pressing or going in for a tackle. But then again, that's the issue for almost everyone on the roster. Some structure around him could be what he needed, along with some actual coaching. I don't think its a perfect solution, but an interesting thought. We could also just throw AWB in there as a RCB, we just finally need to coach him and the rest of the squad lol

I really appreciate your analysis of Eric Ten Hag. He definitely has a clear style of play... something like a direct tiki taka style. Maguire may not fit into this system. A high line would be most likely applied and this requires a mobile and ball playing Central Defender. United in my opinion needs a quality ball playing defensive midfielder, a right winger (probably Antony of Ajax) and a new striker. Once again Statman Dave thanks for this video. Your analysis is most times very interesting.👍😀

Top video as always. I’m hopeful for Ten Hag. Ultimately, I think the responsibility for the next appointment may land on RR’s shoulders. I think he will have a big say at the very least… as he should. This makes the appointment more uncertain. He may have a few maverick ideas that catch us off guard. Are there any weak links in the personnel of that predicted TH lineup? I think we will be looking for a world class no.6. If we’re going to be utilising 3 CB’s then we will need more back up. Maybe you could do a video on incomings and outgoings for our new pressing team.

I think that it is quite unlikely that they will continue to be part of our squad from next year. What do you think about Donny taking that Pogba position, and have you thought about the rumours that Ralph may go out and try and purchase Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig?

Pogba is finally going

I am a Dutch Ajax fan, and I wanted Ajax to bring in Ten Hag in the summer of 2017, after Peter Bosz left. Ajax didn't, and Bosz successor was sacked halfway through 2017/2018, when Ajax was already kicked out of Europe and the Dutch Cup, and already behind PSV in the league. They brought in Ten Hag, and nothing improved. We lost the title race 4 games before the end of the competition, when we lost against our direct competitor PSV, sealing their title. The criticism and even sarcasm was huge. It was only after the summer, when he had the time to implement his strategy, and we signed a few very good players, that things turned. And even then there were troubles, in the first half of the succesful 2018/19 season there were still controversies, and the players had to set Ten Hag right at one point. We nearly missed out on the title, lost 6-2 against our arch-rivals Feyenoord in the spring of 2019. Ten Hag has improved, and build a very succesful team after that, I don't know what we would do without him, but it took time. To translate it to United, Ten Hag would probably end 6th in the Premier League in the first season, loose big against City and Liverpool. He will probably get top 4 the season after, but not be close to the title. Only the year after that you would compete for the title. So the question is, would he get that time from the fans, board and the media? I don't think so. Btw, I do see flaws in your explanation of Ajax as well. You start out well, but your assessment of the wingers from 4:00 is wrong. They are never isolated, they work together with the backs, Antony and Mazraoui have a perfect connection, and Blind and Tadic work together surprisingly well, considering Blinds lack of speed. one of them goes to the inside, the other overlaps. You don't really seem to grasp the importance of the backs, they are really important in our attack. Not as important as at Chelsea or Liverpool, but comparable with Cancelo at City. And I don't think the United centre backs can do what Ten Hag wants. the Ajax centre backs, Martinez and Timber, are extremely good on the ball for centre backs. Timber regularly drives into midfield, outplaying one or two attackers. Martinez can give fantastic long balls, both high and low. Watch the Champions League game Besiktas away, the pass before the assist on the 1-1. I don't see maguire and Varane do that, and you need to have those players to create the overload on the midfield Ten Hag needs. The worst player on the ball we have is Alvarez. But he is our security, he is fantastic at stopping counter attacks early. He was suspended against Besiktas, and our defence was very weak. I am not sure McTominay can do what Alvarez does. Your assessment of Haller is spot on tho. You even noted the problem with high press, that Ronaldo would not do that as well. I am not sure about that tho, Rangick is really focused on that, so if he already implements that this year, Ronaldo could be used to it in the summer. In conclusion, the United attack is good enough for Ten Hag to immediately implement his ideas, but I don't think the defenders and defensive midfielders United have are good enough with the ball to fit in Ten Hags system. Btw, I am not sure Ten Hag could manage all the ego's at United, he doesn't have a player reputation, and is not used to so many star players, managing that could be a problem too.

And Liverpool and City are way more stable when it comes to the leadership of the club. Ten Hag isn't getting 2 years to figure it out, not at United and with his resume so far.

@@jacklynch7802 exactly, and we practically cut the pitch in half bcoz until Sancho played RW we haven’t had a presence ont he right side of the pitch bcoz any Lb can practically ignore AWB and the RW drifts centrally. That’s y JdP principles are important bcoz it stretches the back line and therefore creates more 1v1 scenarios. Rashford can do what Antony is doing but he’s obviously 10x better

With Bruno Fernandes preference to drop deep, as his preferred position is actually number 8. I think it's also possible that he could be starting alongside Pogba, who assume the role occupied by De Jong under Ten Hag. While Van de Beek assume the number 10 further up front, where his best asset as shadow striker can be use. Tactically, these 3 can interchanging their positions during the match. While this setup may look a little frail defensively, the need for dedicate defensive midfielder specialist can be negated by pressing as a unit. Also, Shaw as inverted wing back would occupied defensive half space and act as additional defensive midfielder.

Would love to see one on how Amorim would set us up!

The only issue I'd see is if Rangnick is picking the manger, you'll have to assume he'll want that heavy metal football he's talking about and Ten- Hag doesn't fit that style. The man is without question one of the next generation top manger and a big club will have to be patient with him and allow him to employment his system over the corse of several seasons. That just patently untrue. Ten Hag teams are all about getting a shot off asap and even use simmilar pressing traps based on triggers to Rangnick. Just because they set up differently doesn't mean the philosophy isn't incredibly simmilar.

@@chrispickens9719 it literally is though. It's a different implementation , but the style is incredibly simmilar. Ten Hag teams is incredibly simmilar to Liverpools. The reason they have so much possession isn't because they play keep ball and total football, it's because their press is so effective and they always win back the second ball if they don't score from their crosses. There is no messing around, trying to work a perfect chance like city, there is just 3/4 patterns of play that they use to get a shot off asap. Just because it's an Ajax team, people think it must be tiki taka. It's really not

What mctominay only offers is height ...vandebeek is levels above him in every other aspect so I don't understand what people actually see in mctominay

which means he won't use him as a CDM. The current CDM for Ajax is Alvarez who is awful at passing but fantastic at pressing and regaining possession. This is what Ten Hag would need in his current system which is much more defensively secure than the 2018/2019 team.

One question Dave, I had this query earlier as well. After watching this video, I have reassured my concern. Do you think Ten Hag will be a good person to take the permanent role after Rangnick works with this squad for the 6 months? I do understand that Ten Hag could be the best tactical coaches we can have as an option in the summer, but will he be the right person to replace Rangnick, once the latter moves to the consultancy role ? Ten Hag's system seems more bent towards tiki taka style, than the gegenpressing. Although this doesn't mean that there aren't some basic principles which can be utilized from one system to another, but isn't appointing someone like Rangnick essentially mean that Ten Hag may not be our top priority as the permanent manager in the summer? I could be naive in asking this, but I seriously had this query for a long time now.

He won't be there that long I don't believe 6 months is enough time to have those players stick to his style entirely but basic principles are still similar with Eric who also likes to press high and who knows a fusion of both ideas could create a monster of a system. I think he's a great fit for the role but will need some time to bed in his principles and make the team his own and to also so do some cleaning out.

I totally with you mate. I have the same exact concern about this, and apparently no one is addressing this issue rather than just blindly favoring Ten Hag over any other manager. Also, we had tried this Ajax tika taka at United before under Van Gaal, and as far as I remembered, a lot of United fans were complaining about how boring it is to watch "possession football". Seems like most of the fans had forgotten about it.

@@elmoffiq There is a marked difference between Ten Hag's system and Van Gal's In Van Gal, the main problem was there was a lot of sideways and players seemed a lot more static during the play. In Ten Hag, it's more of a vertical Tiki Taka and the play is much more dynamic in nature. I have watched Ajax CL as well as Eridivisie matches this season. There is a marked difference. I don't mind Ten Hag being appointed as the permanent manager, if Rangnick, Murtough, Fletcher believes at the end of the season that TH can take the squad forward. Let's hope that the decisions that are made in the future (from now onwards) are made for the betterment of the football club. Some decisions can still be wrong, but as long as the intent is right, we will keep progressing in the right direction. We can only hope that these decisions are taken wisely from now on. GGMU

OOT But dave as we know that Ralf rangnick play Gegenpressing. And ETH tactic is more of tiki taka. Great video mate, but I do have to disagree in some part , interms of having a back three Maguire, Varane and lindelof (RB) ball playing CBs but SLOW in pace, This trio will struggle against tops teams counter attacks. Since Bailly has played as a RB in his early days (Villarreal) he may be the ideal candidate. No6 role should go to AWB , he can make those quick short passes and will use his pace to dribble past mid fielders. Finally LB (inverted role) would suit Telles more than Shaw since he has a wide range of passing.

Why is everyone saying Van de Beek should be playing instead of McTominay... You realize that Van de Beek is a number 10 and that the CDM in the current Ajax system is there for when Ajax is NOT in possession. I don't know if McTominay is the kind of player to do that but VDB certainly isn't.
