How drug gangs operate in Europe's most dangerous city

Marseille has long held its unhappy reputation as one of Europe's crime capitals.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But a record 49 drug-related murders last year, fuelled by a brutal turf-war between rival gangs, has taken the violence to a new level.
While French authorities struggle to get a grip - many of those caught up in it say acute social deprivation is to blame.
We were granted rare access to a gang in the city's notorious northern quarters.

I grew up in Inner city Manchester as a youth in the mid 90s but this looks far worse than where I grew up, in fact when I visited Marseille a few years ago, I got mugged on the waterfront by a group of lads. I have to say that the people were very welcoming and down to Earth in general, more so than the snootier Parisians. Marseille reminds me of Liverpool more than Manchester.

They generate €50,000+ per day , however the network boss takes a large chunk, another portion is used to buy more drugs , and the rest to pay the workers who are poor unless they work their way up to the top. Lookouts generally make €80-150 per day and the dealers make €300-€500. So they are still quite poor , especially since it's not something you can do every day like a normal job because of the risks associated . Because you suck at maths... London's population is 9,65 million inhabitants whereas Marseille only has 873,076 inhabitants. so London's murder rate is 1.14 per 100,000 , whereas Marseille's 5.6 per 100,000 . Furthermore that figure doesn't include homicides for other motives , only drug related homicides
