How do you become a psychologist?

How do you become a psychologist? Psychology is one of the most popular undergraduate degrees there is, but very few peruse a career in psychology. That might be for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest is that people aren't sure how to actually become a psychologist. On this weeks episode of GetPsyched we take a look at how to become a psychologist and why you should be considering it

    Hi! Thank you so much for the video and for sharing with us an insight into your career path so far. I was really hoping you could help me with your advice. I am seriously considering becoming a psychologist however my problem is my BA degree which was in political science. What would you say is best to do in my situation as I really don't think doing another BA degree in psychology is a great idea. However I am really up for doing further studies just as much as needed, just not 3-year degree again. I would much appreciate your opinion.

    I think your best option would be a psychology conversion course or a masters, often these can be between 1-2 years. Thanks for your support, much appreciated.

    Hi, new to this channel and it's great!!! Quick question, will a master's in psychology make me a psychologist? Or do I HAVE to do a PhD? And will this allow me to be a doctor? Also if I am doing a psychology undergrad with a sandwich year, and a masters, and a PhD just to become a psychologist, how long do you think this would take me?

  • @GetPsyched

    @GetPsyched

    Zainab Sal welcome to the Chanel! Delighted you like it, thanks so much. Regarding your question, at least in the UK a masters alone will not make you a psychologist no. You need a doctorate to be considered a psychologist. Time wise, including an undergraduate degree and a masters and doctorate it will likely take you at least 8 years. It can often be more though. Does that answer all your questions?

    @@GetPsyched Thank you!!! Yes that answers all my questions, you've been so helpful. Regarding careers, I want to become a psychotherapist. Where in my studies will I need to concentrate on this? Does this mean I have to do my masters in psychotherapy? If so then what is a PhD for? Thanks again.

    Zaeema Khan your super welcome. The best idea is to get experience where you work with people. As for forensic psych, the best options are assistant psychology jobs and particularly if you can get some experience in prisons. Network and engage with services and see what happens. Best of luck!

    Hi😊 Really hoping your will see this message! So I’m currently doing an undergraduate degree in the UK. I think I will want to pursue a PsyD degree (very much looking forward to that!) but I’m unsure as to what program to choose.. I’m really interested in child and adolescent psychology so that seems to be a logical choice but on the other hand I would like to be able to sometimes see a wider range of patients.. which means that a counseling or a developmental psyD program could also be appropriate... To sum it up my two questions are: 1) Are counseling psychologists also qualified to treat children 3) Do you have any information or tips that could maybe help me choose between the 3 options? (child,. counseling or developmental PsyD) Btw I really like your videos and look forward to your uploads..they are always incredibly interesting and informative! Greetings from a half Croatian🇭🇷 half French viewer😉😎!

    Hello, I have a question. I am heavily a tattooed individual, such as tattoos on my hands and neck. They are not anything gang related or offensive in any manner. But with that being said I also have my ears stretched but they are smaller now but noticeable and a tattooed ear on my left side. I work in an office environment that is very professional but allows me to dress business casual. But it has always been a passion of mine to study the human mind and help people either various mental illnesses. So, with all this being said, what is the chances of me getting in this field and not being discriminated due to my appearance? Thank you for any info Sir.
