    The difference is that in the US (apparently) over 50 % of the population go to church every week - and in Europe it's less than 5% - culturally that is big.

  • @lornawestlake9280

    @lornawestlake9280

    Ай бұрын

    Maybe, this is what happening. People from all South American countries, central American countries, in fact anybody who is from a Spanish speaking background is identified in the USA as Hispanic or Latino. Now when you consider that many people from all those countries, (exceptions might be Argentina, Uruguay, Chile?) have some proportion of indigenous blood, or even 100% indigenous blood, that makes them native to the region. If I know somebody is Native American (in the US context that means they are descended from the tribes native to the area bounded by the borders of the United States) I would never identify them as Hispanic, but if I'm walking down the street, I might see a native person and identify them as Hispanic (because all the indigenous blood is interrelated). I hope you're not saying that only white appearing people should be identified as Hispanic. In almost all the cultures of Latin America they celebrate "Dia de La Raza," which celebrates the "new race" created by the mingling of the native and European peoples. To force some kind of Old World understanding on the word Hispanic, shows a cultural imperialism. When you're in the US, you go with their cultural understandings. When you are in Spain, you can use the word Hispanic the way they would, or the way you want.

    Had to pop in as an anthropologist: Regarding negative American stereotypes: Europeans seem to base their information for on-the-ground Americans via TikTok, news media designed to catch attention, and American tourists who can afford or who have saved up for these trips. These Americans often expect the Old Europe and over-imagine the old American influence - hence why some may expect the Dollar to be accepted. Europeans forget or don't even realize that not everyone they're seeing are the average Americans. Yes, Americans can be loud - people get excited and with excitement, our whole nervous and chemical system can raise levels that manifest in loud behavior without us even realizing it. Who is considered an American to these individuals? "You don't look American," is something I'd heard at least twice in the past three years of living in Germany and yet I grew up in the US. Where are these Americans coming from? American diversity and American politics are so interconnected and yet so disconnected that these types of interviews can really accidentally show much bias ultimately have the potential to spread false information. Who is out and about where these are being held? Where are they being interviewed? What kind of information are they sharing? Many Europeans are from not the country where they're being interviewed. People in the US still often seem to treat Europeans as more sophisticated and grand. The architecture and more traditional ways of life - sure - but people are still people with their struggles, misconceptions, stereotypes and unconscious biases.

    @@peter_meyer It goes beyond politics - when people ask about the US on a daily level - respondees so often only see the words. Even the question "What do you think of the US." Never cultural contexts nor the way different regions differentiate from one another with different value systems. Cultures and value systems + revenue, branding, reliable information vs tabloid - who reads what and who is where on what kind of day. What is their exposure to the world or do they get out much of their cities or towns? Miami for example vs New York where Spanish speaking cultures dominate - the police are going to be different than those in small-town Alabama.

    In my opinion US citizens would do themselves a favour if they not only voted for a second term of president Biden but also voted for a majority of democrats in both chambers of congress. The state of infrastructure is a recurring theme in reports about the USA. More affordable health care too. People in the US could quickly see improvements if they'd provide conditions for better cooperation between the congress and the president of the USA. (that's my my response on your question about presidential candidate Trump)

    I’m probably gonna get people disagreeing but… Americans disagree, the two categories polls have deemed the most important regarding the election to the population are immigration control and the economy. Trump outperforms Biden in both categories… We’re tired of the two party system. We’re tired of having geriatrics as choices. We’re tired of having to wait 4 years for a president to be proactive so he can make a case for re-election. We’re tired of the insider trading and internal corruption, along with the lobbying and pandering… the blatant disregard for the Bill of Rights… as an American both parties suck badly and either way the country is going to tank. It would just be nice for once to have a candidate who is cognizant and not ideologically polarized. Even if the three branches were democrat/GOP controlled nothing would get done due to the party’s internal factions. That’s my rant as an American. I would just like to have kids one day and be able to raise them in a community with mental healthcare access, where I don’t have to worry about gang violence and drugs, but congress is too worried about literally everything else but that.

    It's funny that since day 1 Biden took over, people there face economic crisis, he as a president tried to prevent people from working and thus getting by not letting them go out for work and making something (i can't say the word) mandatory for people to live their lives normally in 2020 and in 2021. He couldn't handle the situation on Russia X Ukraine and is spending tax payer money to fund the Ukrainian government when people in the US could have this money in their favor. And now there's this illegal immigration crisis he tries to prevent the states from solving it. And among such illegals, there are criminal convicts, drug dealers, human traffickers. And the mainstream media tries to show them all as poor people who simply want to live better lives. And Trump was doing the opposite whaen he was in office. And even if there are good illegals among these immigrants, they are making life in cities chaotic as most of them don't speak English and don't have enough qualifications to work in a lot of jobs in the US. So a lot of them end up living homeless and depend on goverment handouts. All a country in economic crisis don't need.

    Because there is practically only a two-party system there and at the moment one of these parties, the Republicans, has elected a criminal as its presidential candidate who wants to turn the country into a dictatorship. Trump would then be another puppet of Putin. In a multi-party system it would be more difficult for those who want a dictatorship, as the opposition could also govern in coalitions. We can vote out our governments, but we have to be very careful who we vote for, otherwise we will end up like Russia 90 years ago or now. There is no longer any opposition in Russia. We would then just be Russia's puppets to destroy the EU
