At UM our passing scheme was never dink-n-dunk 2 yd completions all the way down the field. When run game stalled and left us 3rd and 8, we needed passing yards in "chunks". We ran a lot of NFL style, "Mesh concepts" - overloading one area of the field with 3 or 4 receivers. The Downside of that is, all your guys are packed into one tight space. That's usually not ideal. The Upside is, if your QB can account for all the chess pieces quickly, the defense doesn't have the numbers and there will always be a window with one guy open. These are very tough reads, risky throws in traffic, with no room for error. After 3 years of great coaching from longtime NFL QB Harbaugh and tutoring from Tom Brady himself, JJ mastered it, and consistently delivered clutch strikes down the middle, with confidence. He's not afraid to let it off the chain for 55 yards, or take underneath all day if that's all they're giving you. JJ did have 1 reckless game in week 3 against Bowling Green (where he was trying some wild stuff against a 30-pt underdog). He finished with 2TDs, and 3 Ints in a blowout win. If you take away that anomaly of a game tho... he had a total of 1 pick in the other 14 games combined last year. That's insane.

Like any young QB he has a lot of things to learn and it's not a given that he will master them enough to be a success. What I have seen from him looks pretty promising to be at least a competent NFL QB.

Phenomenal analysis. He got overlooked simply because he's a Michigan Man. Take away the two pick 6s in 2023 against TCU (Even then, he still nearly singlehandedly put the game on his shoulders and brought the Wolverines back to win) and who knows?? 27-1 as a starter at Michigan. How do you overlook that? Great get for the Vikings.

McHandoff did what he did because of Harbaughs running game. We bring in a 30 year old RB and now we are the Michigan Wolverines...lmao We Don have good guards and withouguards and tackles at least on one side you aren't running the ball ANYTHING like Michigan...lmao That being said I'm in standby mode. Till I see McHandoff actually handle the NFL and pass 35 times a game instead of 6 to 10 times I'm not getting excited about anything offensive rn. That’s because he doesn’t make quick enough decisions for the NFL. Think Kirk Cousins in 2018 but accuracy in congested pocket and at NFL speed he is untested in the NFL . He has a long ways to go to be good but he does have the arm to make the throws and the footwork which Cousins didn’t, they both have great play action game and can deliver in 3rd and long… McCarthy has better legs too and ability to extend and make plays after his reads are covered if he has time and room to run.. Kirk got way better at a lot of things so McCarthy can as well it just takes time. The OL is worse than Kirk made it look because Kirk got so much better at getting the ball off quickly and resetting the pocket with his legs. And if we don’t bring back Risner it’s even worse. I know people think oh we got ONeil and Darrisaw, but your OL is only as strong as your weakest link and the iOL is not good. Not the environment for a rookie to flourish yet. Give him a year and then Vikings can spend their $100m in cap space on a new Center and Guard and draft another elite player and possibly even make a big trade.

@@MoneyIsSilver NFL is a different beast. Secondary college skills are critical nfl skills. If the play has broken down you’re already late. If you are relying on making plays after the play has broken down you probably can’t do so the same way in the NFL. he has quick feet so the ball gets out but there’s a big difference between college quick and nfl quick. Coverage is tighter, pockets are tighter, pressure is there. Can’t necessarily outrun 4.6 edge rushers to make plays outside the pocket, that can be a weakness not a strength. Zack Wilson got flushed out of pockets a lot in college and it didn’t hurt him in college but was an inhibitor in the pros…. Zack Wilson was a great college QB too. But he didn’t stay in the pocket. In the NFL you have to climb the pocket and trust that your WR will be there. McCarthy has the edge over Maye in this regard. I think the potential is there with McCarthy but I think he just needs time. Drake Maye needs time too arguably more time... I could very well be nitpicking I just think most college QBs are better served getting some time as a reserve until they learn the playbook and if the veteran who is starting is winning you stay with him and let the rookie build upon his comfort until he can be more instinctive.

Lion’s fan here. I am so po'ed at Washington and the Patriots. Because of their ignorance, the 2 best QB's in the draft end up in our Div. New England is the worst. Certain people with them KNEW what JJ would become and loved him, but the main reason they went with Drake May is that they knew the fans would scream out loud that they only drafted him because he went to Michigan like Tom Brady did. No way in this world is Drake May better than JJ. JJ is a winner. My fav plays are the short passes on critical downs, like the 4th and 2 against Alabama. You can literally see JJ in a moment of meditation as he drops back. It's as if he is concentrating on every moment, and the passes are absolutely perfect. Same on the little pass to Corum that tied the game, just an easy pass, but you can feel his controls of the situation and how he forces himself to make the perfect throw at these critical times. Let all these other QB's hand it off on almost every 1st and 2nd down and then be asked to hit a critical 3rd down time after time. Harbaugh would not have run that offense any differently, no matter what qb he would have had. All JKJ cared about was winning, and that's all he has ever done, and he has been a champion everywhere he has played. So I blame the Pats for doing this to our Div. I hope Drake May does well for them, but no way is he the caliber of JJ. They were scared of the "They drafted him because he went to Mich like Brady" narrative.

I'd say their setup well if they can get Darnold going (McCarthy get used to the Pros), but the rest of the North got a lot better as well could be tough sledding if they don't take care of their division. I'm worried if they can't get the offense going out of the gate, but I think the defense continues to improve Brian Flores is awesome took a defense that was almost dead last (31st in 2022) to 16th last year (1st year with the Vikes)... there is a lot to like on the defensive side but the offense has to click and score points.

I really like JJ McCarthy. I worry people expect him to be Tom Brady in his first 5 games. Dude is barely 21. Hes never had to do the things they are going to ask him to do in the NFL. He is going to need some time to get comfortable. I wouldnt even care if he sat for a season. The Vikings have a top 3 WR in the league in JJ. They have Jordan Addison who is good in a very specific role but the Vikings need another reliable, big body WR that can spend the year developing chemistry with McCarthy. I think the Aaron Jones signing was dumb. Hes 30 and coming off the worst season of his career. Running backs dont get better after they hit 30. The Vikings are going to end up with the same issues running the ball as they had last year. In fact, the Vikings lost a veteran QB and a veteran pass rusher that were better than what either draft pick will be, THIS YEAR. So prepare yourself for another rough season, but it will be because young players are getting experience... I think the guy most ready to make an impact this year is Khyree Jackson. Keep your eye on that kid. Love him.

They definitely add some pass rushing linebackers (NOT defensive line), a QB, and some perimeter defenders (two interesting corners). The question STILL remains: Do the Vikings have any elite talent on either of the interior lines of scrimmage (offensive OR defensive)? I'm NOT talking about edge rushers and offensive tackles. I'm talking about defensive tackles (5tech and NT), OGs (Ingram is missing assignments and Brandel isn't a guard ar all) and a center with natural functional strength and anchor (Bradbury NEVER had these attributes, and now he has a reoccurring back condition). Tonga was never good enough to get time at NT (as per Flores' comments), and now they dont even have him. The only 5tech the Vikings have with physical talent/potential is Jerry Tillery, and he hasn't been able to stick on any team since he was drafted. I hope they can play well with the lack of serious talent on the interior line, but this IS an issue, unless we all forgot the 13 or 14 STRAIGHT RUNNING PLAYS for Eagles ran on this team. The blitzing in that game was cute, and then the Eagles decided to man up and RUN the ball down their throats. I dont see new additions that are BUILT to stand against that. If the pass rush is going to be as good as people think, then physical teams are going to run the ball and test the Vikings' toughness in the trenches. The same goes for the high flying offense. Teams (Eagles, Lions, 49ers, Cowboys, Bucs, etc.) are going to want the Vikings to prove their toughness (running and stopping the run). The jury is still out on whether they can do that stuff consistently, so let's pump the brakes a little bit.

If Ingram can improve then there is no worry there but Bradbury is average at his absolute best. Running brandel as a tackle at right guard, who is also a career backup, not a good move. Jones will give him the PA option so just look at Purdy in SF kinda similar here...They keep these players around 2-3yrs this team prob be a SB contender imo

Let me explain something. We have a one of a kind offense but let me get to the defense. I don’t think people know this but we run a 3-4 scheme and meaning we have Dallas turnner and green on the edge with a very good player rotating with him from Miami PLUS Philips who had BIG year getting 6 sacks as a DT is insane. Are Dline is ELITE as they come. Now the linebackers. Oh boy we have a very explosive middle linebacker and the guy is a superstar and what did they do ?? They went out and got a very good linebacker to put next to him in cash AND we also have a guy behind them that is damn good. Easily a stater in the NFL and he’s our back up linebacker lol. Then the secondary, WE have Smith and cam. Smith is basically the best safety in the NFL and cam keeps improving every year. Then we have a very good cornerback in Murray and we went out and got griffin who’s a sold player and don’t forget we have blackmen and the guy we just drafted who is 6’3 and should of been at least a late second round pick. This defense has one whole until I see the second and third cornerbacks step up but that’s literally the only whole on defense. Do you no how rare that is. That means WE have 9 guys that are the real deal !!! That’s just crazy. I think those corners will be alot better due to the upgraded defense. I believe they will have the best defense in the NFL this year and it won’t even be close. Every 10 to 20 years a special defense comes around and I believe it’s this Vikings defense!!! Now the other giant move they did was go get a kicker. Okay they did and they got the best KICKER in college history. That’s pretty crazy. Now we have to see all these guys but man, it’s sure looking like we have a dream team !!! Now our offense has two whole. RG and LG. If they can fix those two things some how, that would be big time. Next year I expect them to draft the best RB witch will be a big upgrade. I believe JJ is the best QB and now she’s on this loaded dream team. Wow

JJ needs time! The stuff you mention he does well in college…. The pro game has way more congestion in the pocket, tighter windows, faster pace, demands more anticipation, and more accurate passes. Bo Nix and Penix did better at that stuff and therefore are more pro ready. Then McCarthy. Then Drake Maye. Drake is going to wash out with New England like Zack Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Mac Jones. He has to learn the playbook and learn to play instinctively. McCarthy at least can do play action and has good footwork and climb the pocket more so than Maye who flushes out way too often like Zack Wilson did. But I hope Vikings don’t start him year one. Patriots are so bad and their fans aren’t used to sucking so bad. They’ll be calling for Maye and Maye will be cut too early and eventually become a great player if he works at it sort of like Rich Gannon taking 9 years to be good but hopefully sooner than 9. Vikings can win with Darnold. Darnold has earned a chance to start after doing what many QBs who have the size and arm and can produce in college. But college doesn’t even require attributes that in the NFL are critical and scouts just assume they can develop right away, but history tells a different story…. Darnold and Baker Mayfield is what will happen to Drake Maye and possibly McCarthy if he is started too early.

People are sleeping on Darnold. He was the #3 pick in his draft class and was thrown to the wolves with the jets and never had time to develop. The panthers weren't a great fit either. He played really well as Purdys backup which was no surprise because they were a superbowl contending team. He is at his peak/prime mentally comming into this Vikings offense. If he plays as well as I suspect he will, we may only see JJ if Sam gets injured this year. He's got more tools than Cousins and does the same stuff better when he has a decent O Line and people to throw to. Darnold is gonna light it up this year mark my words.

You need a rookie to really effectively build your team around over a period of time. I love cousins. Phenomenal qb. If we couldve built a line to protect him he wouldve been one of the best in the league. But cause his mobility is ass and our O line has been ass he was constantly put in bad situations. Not his fault at all tho. Hes just at the end of his run. But he's been a bandaid for the franchise. We need a franchise qb.

Vikings have improved personnel this year...except at the QB position which of course is critical. JJ McCarthy may be better than Cousins at some point, but very unlikely as a rookie and I do not think he will play that much. So unless Darnold suddenly surprises as a good NFL QB the Vikings will have trouble in this very tough division. I think they will finish around .500 at best. After this year though who knows? He might just be Cousins with more mobility and not as good of a deep ball (so more like Alex Smith), or he might be a star.
