Michigan fan here: The issue with McCarthy, is that the offense he was leading was not a pass-first offense so his sample size is so much smaller and analysts are left to wonder if this is the norm or an outlier with him. But when he was asked to put the game on his back, he delivered. I think he has some work to do but he has the physical tools, is a winner and seems to have the mental capacity (which is 95% of being an NFL quarterback) to succeed if put in the right situation.

Appreciate the review. McCarthy is my favorite QB in this draft. Sure, he's young and may need a year to develop, I only watched a couple of Maye's games in college, but in those, I came away with his concerns about his decision making under pressure. The arm talent with Maye is unquestionable, but I worry that he'll struggle with composure and turnovers at the nfl level. McCarthy seems to thrive under pressure which to me is the #1 trait to look for in a QB.

Agree 100%. We've seen what happens to "pocket"passers in Minnesota even as good as Cousins was he was unable to scramble and extend plays. Vikes never had a solid offensive line so I'd lean McCarthy to Minnesota. He'd give you that ability to extend plays, makes throws across his body and throws on the run not to mention already well coached. Maye has a beautiful deep ball but you'd better have a stout O Line for him to be successful. There's also that "swagger" component. I feel McCarthy gives off that vibe that motivates an offense and plays with a bit of that swagger. Able to play under pressure is a natural "gift" not all the time learned. Brady had it (and yes I know he's not Brady lol). As a Vikings fan I'll take either or but will be somewhat disappointed if they don't land McCarthy. Come'on.. JJ to JJ!

Also, detractors of J.J. are quick to dismiss the opinions of Michigan fans as biased. Michigan had a good QB in Cade McNamara who was at the helm when Blue defeated the Buckeyes for the first time in about a decade. But even back then, fans were clamoring for J.J. to take over the starting QB position. In the playoff semi-final against Georgia, McNamara looked bad under pressure and Harbaugh put J.J. in later in the game when it looked like Michigan was hopelessly behind, and J.J. managed to move the ball. Sometimes you can just see when a guy is way better than the competition. J.J. took the job away from McNamara in 2022. Literally nobody wanted McNamara to continue as the starter. It was that clear that Michigan needed J.J. in order to beat the nation's elite teams and win the natty. Meanwhile, McNamara entered the portal and went to Iowa, where he was viewed as the savior of Iowa football. We fans have been able to compare J.J to a very good college QB and easily see how spectaculary better he was and has been for two years. The dichotomy of opinions about J.J. is very strange, especially with all the video evidence of his success and his skill set.

Drake Maye is going to be the better, more flashy NFL qb of the whole 2024 class. I'd take Drake Maye over JJ McCarthy all day. But that being said, JJ McCarthy is going to a stud in the NFL. And I think he's going to win alot of games for a team. Personally, I'm a bucs fan. I would be ecstatic if JJ McCarthy was there at 26. Bucs should draft him in a heartbeat. He is going to be a great franchise qb. Hes so young and raw but still so damn talented with the work ethic to match. Also, I think Bo Nix and Penix Jr are going to be good franchise qbs too. @stevesalisbury3657 He has a long way to go to be a quality NFL qb. Intangibles? Sure although I get Zach Wilson vibes. But he throws into coverage with his eyes closed. Doesn't react to post snap and panics into his presnap reads if protection breaks down. Very bad for the nfl. Has no accuracy or touch on his passes. Also very bad for the nfl. Wherever he goes, pray you have a veteran to ease him along under. But if you throw him to the wolves, he will have a poor td to pick ratio with his current habits that will take time to iron out.

The issue with JJ is, while looking great on tape, there isn't enough tape to really give a proper analysis. We have no idea how he preforms when he's fully running the offense. Michigan understandably relied heavily on their 2 top 10 RB's. When you are centered around running the ball, it's obviously a lot easier to catch the defense off guard with the passing game. Not only that, but these defenses are primarily preparing to try and handle the run game. Regardless, I can't think of a single star NFL QB that passed for under 3,000 yards in a season and that's in 12 games. JJ Passed for less in 15 games. JJ had in 15 games 332 Attempts, which is below #50 in the country, and 2,991 yards which is #35 in the country. Removing the 3 extra games that leaves him at 257 attempts (#97 in the country) 2483 yards (#60 in the country). This is very concerning for an NFL Scout. I'll be the first to say that stats don't matter very much, but in this case this is a severe lack of stats and actual QB play. I hope I'm wrong, but ultimately JJ Is a risk to draft.

While I am not a Michigan fan and only watched a handful of his games over 2 years, when I first saw him, he reminded me of Trent Dilfer, he’s developed over 2 years and in this year’s playoffs, he reminded me of Matthew Stafford, I think he is a project in Ben Rothlesberger mould, he will need to be brought along slowly and develop, he’s used to hard coaching, McCarthy, Broncos and Shaun Payton seem like a good fit together.

Would have to agree. Was listening to Schlerer (I think) and he mentioned and I agree-that what made all these guys special in college, 70% of it does not translate to the nfl. He said the one exception was McCarthy, who ran a 100% pro style offense. Al the other qbs ran a static spread that is non existent in the NFL as it is very simple.

Well said. Most of these qb’s can throw the ball well. In my mind, the best qb is the one who makes it happen when you need it most. Can he get that 1st down when it’s 3rd & 27. Or throw that touchdown when there’s 3 seconds left in the game and your down 6 points. The guy’s that perform the best under the most intense pressure are the winner’s in the NFL. They end up making the best possible decision in the worst possible scenario’s. Instead of buckling under pressure, they notch another W in their belt. JJ McCarthy did a lot of that at Michigan, which is why he has a 27-1 next to his name.

I'm so stoked for this draft. You watch. The 1st 6 picks in this draft is going to be wild. What if Caleb doesn't go to Chicago? Can Chicago take a UNC QB again after the last one they picked? Do the Patriots take the Heisman winner, or the Michigan QB? After all of the success they had with another Michigan QB?? I don't think that Arizona is budging unless they get a haul of a trade. They need a playmaker at WR. I'm hoping they pick Nabers, so that Harrison Jr. can land right in my Giants lap. I'm expecting the Chargers to trade here, unless Harrison is available, they might have no other choice but to keep the pick after trading Allen and cutting Mike Williams.

Thank you for the breakdown! Prefer McCarthy over Maye, but, Harbaugh did not ask him to throw very much. McCarthy was 22 pass attempts per game and Maye about 36 pass attempts per game. McCarthy is young and has the ceiling along with he's a winner. Maybe not the next Michigan QB GOAT candidate, but, out of all the top prospects? He looks like he's worth a higher pick. #1 Williams #7 Daniels #12 McCarthy #17 Maye The desperate NFL GM "looking for the savior" thing distorts the draft positions. Thanks for your analysis, guys, always look forward to the next.

Of all the stats, how you produced on third down or under pressure really is by far the most important stat. It might be the ONLY stat that matters. If a QB can sling a deep ball while NOT under pressure, I say SO WHAT?! Any strong armed qb can produce without pressure. Guess what? Compared to college the QB will ALWAYS be under pressure. McCarthy still needs work, I hope he sits on the bench his first years or two, but he will be very good in the NFL.

I think McCarthy is my guy after looking at this class. Overall I don't really like this class, there is no standout blue chipper this year like Stroud (the Stroud vs young debate was ridiculous, there was no contest between them imo and that was before he lit the league on fire) This guy doesn't have the elite qb skills of a CJ Stroud, but he's good enough, and more athletic and so young. Of this class I like this guy the best.

I love JJ to death, but if he were more accurate, with his age, pedigree, college winning record, athleticism and room to grow physically you would think he would easily be top 5.
