The disappearing island one is actually totally explicable in a mundane way, back when cartography was a huge industry major map makers would frequently add false geographical features to their maps so they could prove a rival copied their map. Sometimes these businesses would go belly up and their maps were effectively fair game, so people would copy these false features without knowing it, so you can get islands and peninsulas that never existed.being in historic charts for hundreds of years until somebody goes and checks.

@@ayviondenar3461 Right, but the idea is it's a feature so insignificant that nobody is going to go check if it actually exists, but still recognizable enough that you can point to it and say "They aped our signature." Some of these features make it into even modern maps, I think there was a court case in Pennsylvania recently regarding property lines based on a tributary that never actually existed, and that shit's on the mainland, you could walk out there and go check, but nobody did.

Just thought of this. There exists an animal called a cuttlefish (a squid type of animal) that is able to rapidly flash colors to hypnotize fish and allow it to approach to catch them. And if memory serves there are frequencies of sound that can cause auditory/visual hallucinations and general disorientation. What if there exists a large creature or group of creatures in the deep ocean that is able to specialize in these things enabling it to come to the surface to hypnotize and make people hallucinate via audio and flashing colors to allow for easy prey as it approaches. It could also use these adaptations to escape big deep sea predators like sperm whales.

Hello! Australian here to clarify crocodiles and alligators. Crocodiles can come in two varieties of water they swim in. Either salt water or fresh water. There are no recorded alligators that can inhabit salt water. Crocodiles also have a more streamlined bodyshape for higher speed and have more pronounced noses on narrow snouts. They are also WAY more aggressive and have been known to attack people often and not because they feel threatened or to eat them

The differences between crocodiles and Alligators: Alligators: The snoutes of Alligators appear to be U shaped when viewed from above, you can see the top teeth stick out when their mouth is closed. Alligators are not quite as waterbound as other crocodilians, they can walk on land for much longer and more effectively than most crocodiles as their hips and legs are a bit better adapted to lifting their bodyweight of the ground. Most species of Alligators tend to have dark hues, like grey, dark green, black etc. Alligators are exclusively found in North America. Alligators are notably way more chill than other crocodilians, they dont tend to see humans as food and will ignore us, unless we give them an oportunety thats too good to pass up so of course one should be carefull arround the ancient murder monster. The largest known species of Alligator is the Missisipy Aligator, males of this species can reach sizes of over 4,5 meters and weights of over 230 KG. Crocs: Snoutes are V shaped when viewed from above, both upper and lower teeth stick out of a Crocodiles mouth when closed, Crocodiles generally spend a bit more time in the water than Slligators thus they are generally a bit faster in the water due to adaptions... Theyre also way more agressive as they consider anything that they can catch as food including humans. Crocodiles have a wide range of colors depending on the species but its allmost allways a hue that blends into the muddy water that is their preferrred habitat. The largest known extant Crocodile species is the Saltwater Crocodile found in northern Australia and the Phillipines, they can reach over 6 meters in length and way well over a ton wich makes them the biggest living reptiles (some snakes like the Anakonda grow longer, but dont reach anywhere near that weight). Its notable that Crocodilians dont stop growing with age so the sizes and weights i gave are for very old individuals, Gators typically dont get as old as Crocs wich is why theyre a bit smaller on average, the Missisipy Gator only gets to live for arround 40-50 years while Nile and Saltwater- Crocs can live for over 100 years. Fun fact: the florida everglades are the only place on earth where both Alligators and Crocodiles naturalli accur in the same habitat, once again proving that Florida is wild and untamed land unfit for human life... second only to the deadly wilds of the australian outback. Another Fun fact: there is several known man eating crocodiles one famous individual being Gustave, the terror of Burundi. Gustave is one really old really big Nile Crocodile that stalks the Burundi river in Africa, he is well over 100 years old and over the course of his life has eaten over 200 people if the locals are to be believed...

17:28- Florida is actually the only place on Earth whith both alligators and crocodiles. Alligators have shovel shaped snouts, and crocodiles have thinner snouts, and they are about as different genetically as humans and gorillas.

It was mentioned last episode but I'll put this here since it was a continuation episode. I don't think we know more about space then we do about the ocean. I think it's one of those situations of the knowledge curve. That curve graph about how your knowledge, or perception of your knowledge, of a thing grows as you actually learn more, just applied across all of human knowledge on a subject. Basically I think we know enough about the ocean to know we don't know *anything* about the ocean. We only *think* we know a lot about space, we don't yet know enough though to realize just how little we actually know. Which when you realize we've observed planets that *rain molten glass sideways* eh I mean sure the ocean is scary, but things that come out of it are restricted *to it* or the coasts for the most part. For all we know space could just drop death on us in an instant.

Love to see this content. I really love how wendigoon presents these stories and the wide range of topics he does. He takes topics that are undeniably really controversial, like you saw in bits of the disturbing video games iceberg, but does it in an extremely mature and respectful way, even when he’s making jokes, it’s never in a form of mockery. My favorites of his are actually his theology lectures, he’s doesn’t to convince anyone of his beliefs, or put down others who do believe in something, just shares cool and interesting ideas and explains the history and culture around them.

I actually wonder if a lot of them are orcas seeing recent trends orcas aren’t afraid of messing with humans maybe back then they were way more aggressive he’ll maybe there was a larger species of them that went extinct they’re also extremely intelligent And honestly when people talk about sea serpents, I wonder if it’s a really big Siphonophore because theoretically they can get infinitely large and there are some that have gotten hundreds of feet long it’s all theory and conjecture though but it’s definitely a interesting theory

I know I’m commenting on my own comment but another thought they came to my head is people love the concept of huge, massive sea monsters that could eat entire islands and I’m just sitting here thinking how on earth is our ecosystem supposed to sustain a being of that size unless if it’s a God of some sort that can just not eating for like 1000 years Man, I love Wendigoons work but sometimes I’m just sitting there like no that’s not what scientists and historians mean they’re not just denying the story and plastering a random answer to make people feel better It’s just that people like us abide by a rule, the least complicated answer tends to be most accurate. We’re not denying the situation was bizarre and crazy. It’s just that this is the most likely answer statistically

Florida actually has both crocodiles and alligators. They are different animals but the main difference is diet, yes both will eat the same things but gators are mainly fish eaters and crocs would rather take a deer or other larger animal. But both will and do eat the same things.

we know what made the bloop and it wasnt a sea creature NOAA scientists discovered that this sound emanated from an iceberg cracking and no there isnt an island eater we put mountains in aftrica(mountains of kong) for decades to centuries (there are other like it) and there sure as hell aint any mountains of kong today is there a mountain eater aswell there is also the fact that we put things on maps cuz we thought there was things there like how we put land in the south cuz we thought since there is so mutch land in the southern hemisphere there has to be more land south (as in a continent) without ever going there they also put fake things in maps to know if someone was copying them a ton of fake towns and sutch was made that way there is also the ocean levels is rising making things that was over land before underland now like doggerland or islands being destroyed (cuz vulcano go boom) An island near Tonga that emerged from the ocean in 2015 was teeming with unique life-forms, but the 21st century's largest volcanic eruption completely obliterated it. and shock shock its not just oceans that dosnt care its nature itself if you want big look up olympus mons its 25 thousand meters tall aka 25 km tall it is soo tall that its more then double The maximum known depth of Mariana Trench(11km) and atleast you could swim and move around by yourself in the ocean

A lot of the cities that are under the ocean now were built in a similar position to a lot of the cities we have as ports today. The reason they are under the ocean is two fold, but because of a singular thing... Glacial melt. Glaciers melting have a dual effect, first they raise the global ocean level. Glacier melts, waters rise, simple as.. right? No. Glaciers have a secondary effect on the continents themselves. See a lot of the Glaciers were MILES in height. That is a LOT of weight, so much weight in fact that is cause the plates to bow. Which meant a lot of the places that are under water now were likely just above ocean level prior. Not just due to the waters being lower, but also because the land was literally being lifted up by a counter weight. We have largely lost that that counterweight, and as we move more and more out of the ice age we'll come to understand the actual depth of the ocean until the next ice age begins.
