How did the Ottomans overcome a Civil War? History of the Ottoman Empire (1400 - 1500)

How did the Ottomans overcome an internal crisis? History of the Ottoman Empire (1400 - 1500)
"
The start of the 15th century in the Ottoman Empire marked the final years of Bayezid I’s reign
as Sultan.
In 1400, major tensions began to rise between the Ottoman leader and a Turko-Mongol
warlord by the name of Timur. This once cold-war reached a heated climax in 1402 at the Battle
of Ankara.
While on his way back through Anatolia to confront the threat of his powerful rival, Bayezid
was caught off guard by Timur and his troops as they besieged the city of Ankara, withholding
the only source of water for the Ottoman troops and forcing them to engage in battle. By the
end of the conflict, Timur’s army prevailed while Bayezid and his sons attempted to make an
escape.

    You could tell Mehmed was gonna win the civil war from the start. He's the only one who has a legit portrait, the others only had sketchy drawings, meaning you could tell who was remembered by history and who wasn't.

Also sadly we see the method of how they started avoiding civil wars... strangling your brothers to the point a line of coffins some clearly made for toddlers coming out of the palace after a sultans ascension isn’t a good sign.

    The whole system was unusually focused on learning from mistakes. And after this era, never again it was reckoned even considerable to risk the stability and order in the realm. Especially after Mehmed II and his reforms, governors became too binded to their territories and they were forbidden to even leave their ground without written permission. They also prohibited a lot of rights of the royal princes, put strict control on their lives and tracked their ability to make military and poilitical actions. Turks were a nomadic bunch before Islam and what they followed was leadership and strength. Ottomans really focused on the dynasty being strong and unbroken. They even chose to abandon marriges, just to keep the dynasty more above from the rest of the world

Their rule in the countries they invaded wasn't subtle or inclusive, but subjugating and suppressing the cultures of the lands they occupied. I suspect you don't know what you're talking about and just going on the fact that they were spreading Islam (and before you respond that I am anti Islam, I'm not, this wasn't Al Andalus).

    @@omarshakkur9551 Thank you for your reply and the historical context. To add to what I said you do have to take conquests and empires in the context of the age they were around in. Christians did exactly the same when they conquered regions. The Golden Age of Islam, when science, maths, astronomy, medicine, philosophy were studied and advanced were when there were caliphates that weren't so fundamentalist in their outlook. This didn't last and I truly believe that when tolerance went out of the window in the end it lead to a more militaristic hardcore approach to non believers. This never ends well, and it didn't. The Ottomans were technologically ahead of the kingdoms they conquered militarily and were for centuries. I only mentioned Bulgaria because in spite of them trying to quell the Bulgarian sense of nationhood it was kept alive in remote monasteries in the mountainous areas of the country, which despite all their efforts the Ottomans could never find and destroy. I've been to one and it was so remote and hard to get to even today. This probably isn't surprising to you as I know that Morocco is mountainous and I think I saw a video on some attempted conquests and in the end the local militias retreated into the mountains and continued resistance from there until they'd drive those along to Mediterranean coast out, and although it wasn't huge militias in Bulgaria, and more their religion and handfuls of men they kept the idea of their proud nation alive. It is all much better when people get along, whatever faith they have. Islam is at its heart a peaceful religion, as is Christianity, Judaism, and many other religions. There are always those at the extremes of all these religions throughout the ages who claim to be of a religion, but aren't really. They preach hatred and division, do terrible acts of cruelty all in the name of their god or gods, but its really all about self interest and power. Peace be with you and your family. Thank you for a very thoughtful and informative response.

    No believe me when ottoman started not to kill their brothers ( like during the reign of sultan ahmet in in mid 1600 he abolished the farticide law) the ottoman started to lose their geopolitical power. Early ottoman sultans believed that only stronger and most capable Shahzade (prince) would be sultans, only stronger will survive. But ahmet abolish the farticide law, later it was accepted that only eldest shahzade(prince) will be succeesors but after his death throne have to given back to oldest prince.

    The 4 most important factors in the rapid expansion of the Ottoman Empire: 1. The Ottomans employed steppe war tactics that Europeans were not familiar with. And the Ottomans made good use of gunpowder, cannons and hand cannons that the Mongols learned from China and brought to the Middle East. A century later, Europe developed the arquebus and the Ottomans adapted this new technology to their armies and developed this type of weapon further. 2. Because the war with Christians was religiously appreciated by the Turkish people in Anatolia, the Turkish people migrated from other Beyliks in Anatolia and joined the Ottoman army. 3. The Ottomans were in a region far from Mongol oppression. For this reason, Turkish tribes migrated to the Ottoman lands. Thus, the Ottoman Empire could settle this Turkish population in the new lands it conquered. 4. The Ottoman tolerance of the Christian civilian population and did not press for forced conversion, which protected the Ottomans from great Christian revolts even during the Ottoman weakness, such as the struggle for the throne

    Cem was more like his father Mehmed, loved by soldiers and nobility as we can understand he want to keep conquer Europe. But fact bureaucracy did'nt want any war, so after Mehmeds death they holted the messenger for Cem and called Beyazid early for the throne. Then he after learnig the news Cem wanted to dived Emprie to half and wanted to role Anatolian part but Beyazid refuse. And later on after little Civil War Cem lost and escape to karaman later on Malta to pope but then he died most likely poison. One of the reasons why Beyazid did not move to Europe is Cem

Whoever was Christian payed more taxes and was a second hand citisen, whoever was muslim was helped by the state. So many people converted, but in Albania not even 5% of the population have ever stepped into a mosque, people just say they are muslim because their family claims to be myslim too, but the reality is no one gives a fck about religion in Albania. If you ask my grandma she will say she is a muslim, and then proceed to celebrate christmas, new years eve, saint george day etc... so you get my point.

    This video was about to show a typical civil war of the Ottomans then it talked about many more actions of those times leaving aside a glorious history... Just to illuminate the readers of these comments, I must say as an Albanian that the most glorious effort of our nation is left aside in this analysis. Constantinople which had resisted over many centuries to many conquering military organizations and tribes felt on 1453, and the Albanian capital of Krujë felt 15 years later on 1468 after the death of George Castriot, resisting 3 enormous military campaigns more or less of the same number of troops and canons as the campaign of Constantinople, also defeating the Ottomans in 25 battles from 26 held, from 1444 to 1468. The castle of Shkodër resisted 11 years more to the Mehmed efforts until 1479. If you want to inform correctly and show some great pieces of history you had to cover better the part of Mehmed’s expansion.

  • @subutaynoyan5372

    @subutaynoyan5372

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well, I don't like to bash your culture of anything, but Kruje was just a backwater and nobody cared for it that much, and the castle is located at an impossible location to begin with. Ottomans disliked long sieges, and they were otherwise preoccupied with more pressing concerns. It's not like they were really eager to take Kruje like it's Constantinople or anything. Kruje's fall was secured when Mehmed II went there with his army, and saw that he won't be taking the castle by force. Instead he turned Albania a warzone, pillaged villages, built fortifications to limit Albanian rebel armies and decided to wait them out, instead of letting Skenderbej waiting him out.

  • @arberselishta1890

    @arberselishta1890

    4 жыл бұрын

    M Bayrak It’s not for bashing or boosting anything more than simple facts for those who want to analyze with less subjectivity as possible. I am not saying that Krujë was more strategic than Constantinople, but it is ridiculous and very emotional to call it a backwater just because of the unprecedented failures the Ottomans had those times. Judging from a simple geopolitical perspective Krujë and Albania in general was a must do conquest for the Ottomans because of the access to the Adriatic Sea and to put pressure as soon as possible to the Italian peninsula, whose conquest was even a bigger caliphate dream than Constantinople... If it wasn’t for these two and many more other reasons there wouldn’t have been 100k troops on each siege, in Constantinople were 100-200k. Also the guerrilla type forces of Skenderbeg and those inside the walls were outnumbered more or less 6/1!

  • @Sextus70

    @Sextus70

    3 жыл бұрын

    Also I don't like how it omits other epic christian battles and victories of the time against the Ottomans such as the Siege of Belgrade, which was so decisive that it put a halt for almost 70 years to Ottoman ambitions of conquering more European territories. The mastermind of that victory was John Hunyadi BTW, which this video makes look like somewhat incompetent when he was in fact one of the greatest commanders of the time, even praised by Mehmed II himself when he died of sickness. Hunyadi managed to best the Ottomans in battle many times before those "humiliating" defeats the video mentions, that nonetheless caused important losses to the Ottomans and forced them to retreat to regain their forces before new attempts of advancing through Europe.

Constantine XI decided in 1453 that he no longer waved to be a vassal and took steps to end it,one of them being threatening to release the uncle of Mehmed II to potentially cause strife as the uncle was a claimant to the Ottoman throne. As far as Mehmed was concerned, Constantine's threat violated the previous peace agreement, thus Mehmed preparing to take Constantinople.
