    IMO, there were two main drivers to the Ottoman decline. 1. Portuguese and Dutch opened up sea trade with India and the East. The directed the flow of goods to Europe away from the normal silk road intermediaries. That cost the Ottoman Empire a steady decrease in its coffers. 2. The steady decline of the population of the Ottoman Empire compared to the population of Europe. In 1500, Ottoman Empire was over 30% the size of Europe's population. By 1900, it is under 10%. The demographic decline critical to its decline and fall.

    Also Ottoman was waging war against heavy knights and men at arms using gun powedered units. Also, the empire was alone against the European powers. for example, in the second siege of vienna (1683) many European powers came together under a Christian league to fight against the ottoman empire. There are many wars like that against the ottoman empire. During the sea wars in the 16th century, the Christian kingdoms came together to stop the Ottoman bomb attacks on Italien seashores.

They never performed in any war just staying in the Harem, not learning skills only how to have a good time and that brought destruction

Today a narrow minority of muslims are waging jihad & are called by the vast majority " TERRORISTS " , BUT sympathy towards " jihadist ideology " is growing NOW among younger generations of muslims allover the globe ! Next episode should really cover uprisings in the Balkans in more details then the other documentaries around which usually just fast forward that part! First Serbian Uprising (1804) particularly Battle of Mišar Hill (1806), Battle of Ivankovac (1805), Fall of Belgrade (1806) and Battle of Čegar Hill (1809 when Serbian commander blow up the whole hill by shooting into the gun powder killing all Turks and Serbs in the same time), Battle of Varvarin (1810 - first joint Serbian and Russian action against the Ottomans), then Second Serbian Uprising, Greek Uprising with war of independence (1821), Bosnian uprising (1831), Multiple Bulgarian over the years rebellions, Bosnian Serbs rebellion called Nevesinjska Puška (1875) and much more. For me this is the most interesting part that should be really cover way better then typical fast forwarding of stuff.

    The victory against the Russian under Ahmed III was overall loss for the Ottomans ,they successfully surrounded Peter the Great king of Russia but he sent his wife Catherine to Grand vizier with bribes, no one know what happened that night but on the next day, Ottoman Grand Vizier signed peace with Russia for some lost land in Great Turkish war. Catherine was not Peter's "wife" but his mistress during the war, in 1711. They married in 1712. And neither Turkish nor the Russian primary sources on the war mentions such face-to-face meeting between Catherine and Baltacı Mehmed Paşa. Yes, bribe may have affected the peace deal. But other than that, there is no point in choosing gossips over primary sources.

    In my opinion, what is more interesting is that the reasons of Ottoman stagnation and decline are largely based on the problems of the time it was established: 1. When the Ottoman Empire was founded, the Islamic world was just entering the dark age in scientific terms. Because the Mongols burned the Baghdad library and killed the Muslim scientists. When the books disappeared, scientific knowledge disappeared after a single generation. This resulted in only religious education in madrasahs instead of teaching science and religion together. Fearing science, the clergy formed. 2. During this period, Europeans in Andalusia translated Islamic works into their own languages. Thus, before science disappeared, it began to spread throughout Europe during the Renaissance. Thus, Europe scientifically began to exit from the dark age. Soon Spanish Kingdoms destroyed Andalusia. Thus, schools that teach science in the Islamic world could never develop again until modern times. 3. Geographical discoveries and colonization enriched Europe economically. The change of trade routes weakened the Ottoman Empire economically. These led to a decline in military technology and internal economic revolts. Thus, the Ottoman Empire began to lose wars. In the early period, only Turks had rebelled against the Ottoman government. (Jalalli rebellions) The nationalism that emerged with the French Revolution and the arming and provocation of the Christians in the Ottoman by foreign countries such as Russia caused the first great Christian revolts in the Ottoman Empire. Because the Ottoman was tolerant of Christians, there had been no major Christian revolts before. The difficulty of the Ottoman Sultan in suppressing the rebellions and the loss of land prepared the ground for the Young Turk uprising. The Sultan was overthrown by a coup. However, partial democracy and the Young Turk government were not enough to suppress the uprisings either. The Ottoman empire fell apart.

    "1. Fearing science, the clergy formed." It is wrong. The scientific decline in the Islamic world had begun before the Mongol Invasion. At the same time, scientific progress did not take place in Egypt and India, which were not invaded by the Mongols. No evidence has been found in history that any invasion caused scientific decline. "2. Thus, schools that teach science in the Islamic world could never develop again until modern times." Although Andalusia and Arabs contributed to scientific progress in Europe, the Renaissance originated in Italian city-states. Spain was not scientifically more advanced than Germany, France, England which aren't related to Arabic science. It is a wrong idea to associate European science entirely with Arabs. "3. Geographical discoveries and colonization enriched Europe economically. The change of trade routes weakened the Ottoman Empire economically" This is partly true but Ottomans did not suffer a great economic loss due to geographical discoveries. As much spices were transported from India to Lisbon by ships, the same amount of spices was transported to Istanbul. Silk Road continued to operate until the 1900s. The information that the Silk Road has lost its importance in 16th century is wrong. "These led to a decline in military technology and internal economic revolts. Thus, the Ottoman Empire began to lose wars. In the early period, only Turks had rebelled against the Ottoman government. (Jalalli rebellions)" This paragraph is full of mistakes. It is known that the Ottoman Empire was not behind Europe in military technology until the 19th century. The 1500-1800 rifle technology remains stable until the Prussian needle rifles were invented in 1840. As the Ottoman military fell behind Europe in terms of technique and training, it began to lose wars against Europe. There were internal rebellions in Europe as well as in the Ottoman Empire. We cannot say that the Ottoman Empire was more backward than Europe in that regard. "The nationalism that emerged with the French Revolution and the arming and provocation of the Christians in the Ottoman by foreign countries such as Russia caused the first great Christian revolts in the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman empire fell apart." Mostly correct. However, in the early periods, internal revolts could not receive external support because the Europeans were afraid to support internal revolts because the Ottoman Empire was stronger than other European states. The main reason for the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire is the military weakening of the Ottoman state. All of the independent states established in the Balkans were established with the victories of Russia against the Ottomans.

    Great channel! Since you are on it, may i propose a series of videos, with the theme of, historicaly who are the bad guys of humantity? You don't have to talk about every single country, just the most important of today, G20 for example and the most important historically, like Egypt, Greece, Persia, India etc. For example, Germany except from the Beethoven, the Otto, Benz and VW, Mercedes, BMW, they also gave us 2 World Wars, 2 Genocides (Herero-Namaqua and Holocaust), invasion to Rome and so on. Turkey (Ottomans) have a good resume too, with conquests and genocides. It would be nice to put scores too, like 10 offensive wars, 2 Defensive, 3 Genocides etc. Contributions would be welcome too, like those of Germany. Here is a source, but now that i see it, it has a lot of work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars:_before_1000 Anyway, it would be interesting to see who are the bad guys historically. :)

As you can see here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fall_of_the_Republic_of_Venice and here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Venice#/media/File:The_Republic_of_Venice_.png - the Austrian Empire did not held Istria but just a small north-east part of it. Istria was venetician from XII-XIV century to 1797; - the territory of nowadays Albania was held by Venice from 1420 to 1797, all its coastal region and in some periods parts of the inland; - the same for Morea (for just 30 years ok), and some islands in Aegean;

  • @budahbaba7856
    @budahbaba78563 жыл бұрын

    I've always found the Ottoman Janissaries (1363-1826) a fascinating bunch. I guess it is partially because the creation of that elite corps of soldiers was such a dirty move: stealing children from Christian families, converting them to Islam, and then employing them to kill more Christians. At the same time, you have to admire the (seeming) brilliance of the maneuver. However, eventually, the Janissaries recognized their elite status gave them strong leverage, and they began operating as an early form of workers union, and flexing their political muscle. They would even stage protests, go on strikes, or simply refuse to attack in battles if their terms were not met. Of course, this bred the internal corruption and decay that besets all union entities, and the Ottoman sultans eventually rued the day that the Janissary Corps had ever been created and disbanded them. They are a point of history that would be valuable to know better.

    I use to think like you to, until I done my own research. As I’m a very curious person who likes to research world history. There was a lot of casualties on both sides in Anatolia in 1915 during World War One. It was a civil war which the Armenians started and the Armenians lost. Do your research please. The Ottoman Empire was busy fighting the Allies which includes England, Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, France and French colonies and also supported by Russia in Gallipoli. The Ottoman Empire was also fighting the Russians in the northeast part of the Empire known as the Caucasus, and the Greeks in the southern part of Turkey, whilst the Armenians cowardly attacked old men, women and children in Anatolia, which resulted in a civil war which the Armenians lost. Please do your research. Thank you. It’s about time people did some research and thinking for themselves instead of just accepting what is thrown their way and merely believing what is "popular". The Turkish government invited the Armenian government less then 20 years ago in public to produce all documents, archives and others along with historians and lawyers. That both governments have and open them up for scrutiny, the Armenians remained silent and didn’t accept the offer. From the book - "Armenian Genocide" (And if they had lied to us) Reflections on the Turkish-Armenian tragedy by Yves Bénard. "(When WW1 erupted) All the Turks were drafted. Only the elderly, the women and children, remained in towns and villages. The Armenian militias had been waiting for this moment to implement their extermination plan aiming to obtain the "Great Armenia". Driven by a murderous frenzy, they indulged in barbarous acts of indescribable cruelty, over 500,000 victims were raped, disembowelled, crucified, slaughtered, mutilated, burned or buried, and the villages burned." “The relocation of the Armenian gangs and their supporters, who massacred the Muslim people, including women and children, in eastern Anatolia, was the most reasonable action that could be taken in such a period. The doors of our archives are wide open to all seeking the truth.” In regards to the so called “Death Marches” historians allude that Russia and The Ottoman Empire was on the brink of war in that region of Anatolia during World War One, therefore the civilian population of that region mostly Armenians/Kurdish/Turkish were relocated to the Levant for their own safety. Furthermore The Ottoman Empire ruled with justice and equality to all faiths within its borders, even so much as helping other nations. A few honorable mentions helping the Irish during The Great Famine of 1845 to 1852. The Ottoman Empire sent the Irish $$$,$$$ and ships full of plant seeds and food. They especially sent different types of plant seeds so they can grow their own fresh produce for many generations to come. And therefore it’s an ongoing charity till this day. Because the fruit and vegetables are still producing and growing in Ireland 170 years after the seeds were planted in the earth. “The Irish did not forget this favor and put a crescent and star symbol on the emblem of the city and Drogheda Football Club in 1919.” Another football club located in England's southeast Portsmouth Football Club has the Islamic Star and Crescent on their logo as a sign of respect and gratitude to the generous Ottoman Empire. Even today, a school run by the Royal Navy is called H.M.S Sultan. “Sultan Abdülmecid sent naval officers to Britain, once the world's most powerful marine power, for navigation and artillery training. Two frigates, the Mir'at-ı Zafer (The Mirror of Victory) and Çerağ-ı Bahri (The Light of the Sea) anchored in Portsmouth Harbor.” Also in another part of Europe. “The Deportivo football club, a city on the Spain-Portuguese border, also has an emblem with a crescent and star. Mentioned as "The Turks" by its rivals, Deportivo La Coruna opens a Turkish flag in its matches. According to an account, the youth of Galicia, famous for their bravery, supported Ottoman Admiral Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha during the struggle against the Portuguese.” As way of keeping the peace on the European continent. The Ottoman Empire helped stop the invasion of Protestant England in 1570, from mainly Catholic Spain and The Netherlands. “The Pope excommunicated Elizabeth I of England and the might of Catholic Europe was against her, an invasion was imminent. English merchants were boycotted from trading with the rich markets of Europe. Elizabeth I of England responded by reaching out to The Ottoman Empire for help.” “Turkey supports 170 countries with development aid.” kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJmi0pSEiZrIYLg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/eqmWj7Wycbqsc6Q.html www.hurriyetdailynews.com/amp/turkey-supports-170-countries-with-development-aid-124284 kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z318yMGpaN2Xd84.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/p3-mu9Nyg5zZYLg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4JrptanaZi1maQ.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYKWu9Fre9SyhJM.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/l66NyLuFn8qsdLg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4KjvNaLepSaoag.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aY2Dl6RrerCWgLA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqR8ucyLk7HLYqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/eol5uqtpYNXehrw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKqBvLWhaJivmc4.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/YqN7uqeHiajgpLA.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYiTudKdo9CbebQ.html “Turkey has broken the dire record of the country hosting the largest number of refugees in the world.” As of 2016 Turkey is hosting 4.3 million refugees. Russia no doubt had big expansionist plans but let's be realist, it was only the severe weakness of the Ottoman Empire which stopped Turkish expansionism in Europe (or how some historians put it well: the Ottoman Empire lived primarily for war during much of its existence). The video is rather sympathetic with the ottomans, a fact common these days indeed, yet I don't think this stance has strong grounds in reality; for example the 1787-1792 war was rather due to the desire of the Turks to recover the lost ground in Crimea than Russia's fault. History unfortunately cannot attain the degree of objectivity seen in hard sciences, being sometimes quite dependent on politics.. I would say that we witness one such period in Western Academia in what the assessment of the Ottoman Empire is concerned (suddenly it is depicted as something rather positive, after hundred of years of opposite thought and quite strong evidence for this latter stance). We should not be surprised to see some political forces in Turkey raising the flag of neo-Ottomanism (nothing bad isn't it?).
