One of my Patreon supporters asked me an interesting question: how did a man join the Knights Templar? In this podcast, we delve into the issue, and look at the process and vows involved in becoming a Templar Knight.
The thumbnail image "Templar Helm", and the images used in the podcast "Templar Mass" and "Templar Battle" are by the talented artist Gordon Napier. Check out his site:

    I would imagine a lot of Templar Knights and Crusader knights in general were second born or third born sons who by reasons of primogeniture could not inherit their father's title and estate. So it was either enter one of the monastic orders and become a monk join the priesthood, or seek their fortunes out on crusade in the Holy Land where they joined one of the military monastic orders like the Templars, Hospitalers, and the Teutonic Order.

    In the Kingdom of Sardinia (predecessor state to Kingdom of Italy et seq) sons of the blood who were "secondo, terzo, ... l'ultimo genitori" inherited a lesser title i.e. the second son of the Marchese di Siena (Marquis) would be "name" Nobile' del Marchese di Siena. And the male who is l'ultimo genitori (last born) who remains or returns to care for his aged/ill parents gets the family home/entitled to remain in perpetuity.

    Just as there were mounted sergeants in civilian medieval forces, the Templars also had these, in addition to sergeant infantry. Sergeants in the cavalry were less heavily armed, used as scouts, charged not in the initial wave, but typically came in the second wave to hit the enemy that had been disrupted by the knight's charge and then screen while the knights reformed for a second charge. Many sergeant brothers were non-combatants and were often referred to as the "craftsman brothers". These were blacksmiths, carpenters, stable hands, etc. These brothers might take the field with the army, but unlike the regulars, could "withdraw if they felt unable to withstand the enemy." Also, interestingly, the Order in the Holy Land, usually included Turcopliers, which were light cavalry, in the Saracen style. I recommend Templar Incorporated and Templar Organization by Bruno as an interesting examination of the organizational structure.

    It should be noted that in the Germanic States you could be ennobled. Usually in result of some service to the King. My own family history is one such ennobling though the act that gained the title is lost to time and history. Such "raised" families were required to annotate that on their Heraldry. There were marks to show such things in the heraldic system.

    Peasant equals Farmer! Trades people, Craftsmen, Religious, all had their roles there were particularly proscribed methods for becoming a member of any guild Tradsman/Tradesmen/women Artists etc. But the word Peasant equaled the word farmer. There was little mobility between classes and trades. There were some wealthy and independent Peasants but most were subjects of a liege lord. A fairly rigid structure that occasionally allowed movement up or down. More common was movement "sideways" as in a peasant becoming an ordinary foot soldier, artisan, monk, A Guilds person, fisher man Sailor, pilot etc, but as the Middle Ages evolved, social position was for all means and purposes very rigid, requiring extraordinary actions or skills that would cause or permit the advance in social class.. One such family were given prestige and honors and advanced in the Warrior/Cavalier class in recognition and thanks for the pathfinder showing the way under cover of darkness and avoiding the eyes of the enemy marking the direction necessary of the Army using a cows head as an indicator of the correct direction to take under cover of darkness. This man was given honors and favors from his liege lord and also given the right to the Name of Cabeza de Vaca in perpetuity. Except for recognition of extraordinary services rendered, there was very little vertical advancement, horizontal movement was much more common in those days. It was relatively common for a Peasant to become an Artisan, a merchant, a pilot, a cartographer or other skilled vocation. More commonly, one was born into a given class and lived and died in the situation he was born into. There were exceptions, but it required a Liege Lord to recognize and facilitate any vertical movement.

    My understanding is that no matter your social class, the Templars did not make any knights. If you wanted to be a knight within the order, you had to already be a belted knight before joining. My line of thinking, is that if the templar were an army of god, then if that is the case, all is fine. But they will need great craftsman to supply and/ support the cause, so why is this aspect not scrutinized? No army on the earth has ever survived without logistics. I am a Catholic and sometimes i get confused as to why some of these vids seem to glorify warriors and the real people behind-the-scenes are ignored. They are the people that have to carry on after the fact!

    Did any templar marry?

  • @dashinvaine

    @dashinvaine

    5 жыл бұрын

    Templars couldn't marry, though in the early days there were provisions for married men joining as sort of honorary associates. Several nobles did so, including Henri of Champagne and Fulk of Anjou. After the abolition of the Order some Templars rejoined secular society and took wives, though the Church tried to prevent this as it still held these ex-Templars to their monastic vows. I believe there were also cases of married men becoming pensioners with the order, donating their land and being obliged to live apart from their wives. Some men also joined the Templars after becoming widowed. I believe one of the smaller Spanish military orders allowed married knights to join, but generally that was not permitted in monastic orders of any sort.
