Welcome to the first Athletic Interest Case Study! A new series on our channel in which we team up with partners to look into the most interesting stories behind sports.
And what better partner to start with a case study than WHU professor Sascha L. Schmidt and his Harvard colleagues, who will help us understand how European football clubs are going East to build their brand in China.
Thanks to Sascha L. Schmidt for partnering with us! You can find an overview of all of his research under this link:

Hi lads, Chinese here. It won't happen. The plan sounds great, and China is known to be successful in major projects. But this particular project is different from building the longest bridge or the largest crane. Football training takes talent, consistentcy, and mentality. The plans to build a building doesn’t involve the building's consent, but training footballers has so many other factors you need to consider. In China, people see education as the best way to prosperity. We don't have a social safety net like Western Europe where failed players can take blue collar jobs and still live a good life. Blue collar jobs in China sucks, period. Football training takes time, time that parents would usually expect their kid to spend on schoolwork or reading. There are tens of millions of white collar or skilled labor jobs in China, but only 23 can be on the National Team's roaster, only ~500 in the top league, and only thousands in all levels of professional leagues. Consider the opportunity cost, of course the parents would want their kids to study harder than to train harder. Another point that I want to mention is that the local officials may not entirely follow Xi's grand plan. Before 2021, we have already seen some versions of "playing football" without playing football. There was a picture of pupils doing exercises with footballs-- holding the ball with their hands. This is by all means a "football-related exercise", however, how can this contribute to their football skills? I wish my national team to be successful. But ultimately, we need a system that can guarantee a child’s prosperity even if they fail to become a professional footballer. And the key to that is more economic development and a stronger social safety net-- NOT a top-down grand plan that exclusively focuses on football.

What about the Olympic players in China? If what you are saying is correct then the Chinese parents shouldn't be letting their kids train for olympics, but study instead right!? But that's not the case!

Bloody hell that was eloquently put. Well done mate. I think another thing with this is that it's heavily reliant on whoever holds power in the Ccp. Xi is definitely not gonna be running things in 2050. The difference between the massive architectural endeavours that China often excels at and a National football scheme is the fact that the former can objectively be viewed as something that, in the long run, can benefit China's Booming economic growth and enhance their place on the world stage. Which alongside Control of the country are the Ccp's primary objectives. The problem comes from the fact that whoever comes after Xi may view this as nothing more than an unescesary waste of money that could otherwise be spent on other more reliable industries. Unless (as you said) Immediate or Quick success is seen then it'll likely get scrapped and football isn't something that can just become a mainstay in a culture overnight, it has to be cultivated over time and then perhaps you can think about winning a world cup.

@@tio9896 Perhaps because in those places there's nothing to lose and much to gain, so the risks are well worth the try. Also, in South America football has a really big presence in society. It's nearly a fundamental pillar of it, in which the week overarching mood is dictated over how your team fared the previous weekend.

Amazing and inspiring channel. Nevertheless, as someone who lived in China for many years as a sport manager, tennis coach and football lover, I can say that the market in China is totally different as people believe it is in the western world. Chinese children are actually getting less and less physically talent each year since playing sports or doing any extra curricular activity in this country means a lot of cost to cover from the family, also because the Chinese school demand a lot from the students, and the kids spend so much time everyday in electronic devices. I don't intent to judge the great job done by Athletic interest, but actually this video refers more about the business opportunities that football entrepreneurs, football federations and football clubs have now in the Asian market. The same is happening to others sports in China, but a smaller scale of course. I don't see how is that actually is going to make China win a World Cup, maybe it's a similar case to Emirat Arab United.

@@austinwilliams2526 Hey Austin, I just left Shanghai a couple months ago. That reform is actually true. However, it is not a problem of kids joining a sport discipline, the real problem is that having an active and healthy life-style is very difficult in this country. Also, if a children aspire to receive foreign education or coaching the cost are high and the quality is not the best in many cases.

The problem with Chinese football today is the lack of a good youth training program in the early 2000s, so the bad result in 2021 is a consequence of it. The only trusted way to become better at football is to get more people play, and have a well funded youth football program that can cultivate the talents. So the effort China does today, won't have much of an effect until 2030s or 40s.

Sadly, India will never take such strict measures for developing football. Politicians busy with corruption and riots. I think of legends like Chuni Goswami, Gostopaal, Bhaichung Bhutia, etc. will feel extremely bad for such neglect to this beautiful game. We Indians really love playing football and play it with passion, but won't make it much further in World stage with the current programmes and infrastructures. Barely any parent will want their kid to play football as it has so low income and high risk or injuries.

In Chinese community, a lot of people more care about getting high salary jobs like lawyer, doctor and among others.Instead u having passion and become professional athletes on sports like football, parents weren't that optimistic, they care more about their kids has/must to be excelled at education, make their family proud and showing off to others families how good their kids even though themselves doesn't like study after all. And talk about sport they don't care that much about process, development and other things to improve anything, result talk first which is the most saddest part. As a Chinese myself, If I have option and money,I rather spend more money to go another country like US or Europe top football/basketball leagues than staying and watching own league cause the sport atmosphere differences are too much

As a Chinese, I have to say Chinese football team is hopeless. Everyone knows it in China. Xi jingping is an avid football fan. He can deal with corruption by arresting more than 1M corrupted officers, but he is also powerless with football. Here is a real joke. There is a jail named "Yanjiao Prison" locked many corrupted Chinese Football Association officer. Sometimes It opens tour for educational purposes A football fan lucky participated it, He asked the prisoner: Can you watch the football game on TV? The prisoner said: Yes, I especially like watching the national football game. They always loses. Their failures are not related with corruption at all.

Thing is India was more of a region until very recently, not a country, which is why if you controlled even most of India you were considered an empire. Meanwhile China was a country country with a unifying language and ethnicity with few outliers and has had a pretty defined heartland for 2000+ years, with Tibet, Manchuria, and Xinjiang added more recently

@@srbtlevse16 but China also has a wide diversity of peoples, cultures and languages. It’s just that the communist country has decided that they will dictate who/what a Chinese is at the expense of others iterations. Admittedly, part of the reason was to standardise but it’s come at the expense of losing a variety of culture which is a shame. China also was therefore a region (like India) and it only became a country with defined and unified borders in the 20th century.

@@srbtlevse16 So this is how history is taught in England and the west in general. And that is how you do not feel ashamed of colonizing past but unfortunately to think you have unified countries and possibly may have also thought about white man's burden as well. Let me break it for you, it is not out of altruism Britain and other countries colonized other countries but to just plunder the resources and made systems best possible for executing. If you are taught anything else it is like defending Hitler's genocide for his so-called awesome autobahns.

I can see something like this working. Japan in Rugby was really bad 20 to 30 years ago. In the last Rugby World Cup they made the Quarter Finals. The way they improved was by getting players from outside of the country to join the team. Maybe something similar might happen. haha

  • @woowonton
    @woowonton8 ай бұрын

This plan reeks of arrogance. The Japanese were humble enough to recognize that they needed a 100-year plan (from the inception of the J league) to maybe win a world cup. The reason why the Japanese were so successful was because they did not neglect youth development and grassroots football (among other things). In addition to working hard, they plan long term and know that there is no short cut to success. Contrast this with the Chinese "short cut" approach of just throwing money around and hoping to win the world cup within a span of less than 50 years. The contrast between the Japanese and Chinese mindset is indeed worlds apart.

England has the best league in the world, the best managers work there. Football has been the most popular sport there for over 100 years. Nevertheless, the English do not manage to win the WC again. It's been 56 years and frankly, I don't see England winning the next WC either. Unlike all the other technical sports where China is the world's best, you can't plan to win a football WC. Even though South America is a football-mad continent, they've been waiting 20 years to win another Cup. It's all about Europe, that's where the heart of football is and it's going to be incredibly difficult for other countries outside Europe to win the WC. In the past 4 WC there were 7 European teams and only one team from South America in the final, 3 of the 4 finals were all-European, 13 of the 16 semi-finalists as well. In the history of the WC, only 1 country outside the football superpowers has made it to a semi-final. China is only third class and the construction of a hundred centres will not change that much. These already exist in Europe and development will not stop there either.
