Hong Kong was the best British colony, and if they could have gained true independence they could be like Singapore. But instead they are a Chinese colony exploited and oppressed more than ever. As an American, I support Hong Kongers!

What a shame to see HK go down. It blew past the leaden UK long ago in per capita income. It had very free markets, social life, and politics.

Hong Kongers prefer open mind civilized governors from the UK than Beijing elected Chief Executive. Did the HK election represent each vote from 7 million population, the answer is NO, and hand picked by Peking. It is not democracy either!

Interesting… did hk people get to choose their governor before the handover? 🤔

No, all governors were appointed by Her Majesty. If HK people asked what they want, they were giving chances from media, by LEGCO without jail risk. Unlike present.

You have to accept that democracy does not suit everyone, with the Chinese being a prime example. The Chinese (incl Hong Kongers) are more suitable being led....like bees or any of the animal kingdom capable of group organization but lacking independence.

When your interviewer says we are offered liberty I think we need to establish better understanding. We are not offered liberty. We are governed by consent. Please correct me if I am wrong.

When Baron Patten of Barnes left, he told Hong Kong people to fight for democracy. But back then, when Hong Kong was under UK jurisdiction, did the hong kong people have the right to choose their governor? No, it was the UK people and their queen to decide who the next HK governor was, not the hong kong people. So what democracy? Pretty hypocritical of the British part. Uk people should learn their place and not interfere with other countries affairs

Because you communist chinese always interfering with hong kong democracy progress since 50's. China isn't Qing dynasty, hong kong is not china's. China is just a country established in 1949, only 72 years old.

And you should learn history before spreading propaganda for China. The Brits mulling granting Hong Kong self-governance in the 1950s, it was the Chinese government under Mao Zedong who quashed these plans, threatening invasion.

Because Chinese government interfered the British rule in HK, so HK didn’t have democracy. Learn the history carefully. Most British colonies around the world were given democracy and continue to have it after British left

Hong Kong was doing well until your China came in to grab it and take away all the freedoms Hong Kongers had under the Brits. In any case, from a moral point of view, Hong Kong should be given independence (but, of course, the Chinese dictator, Xi Jinping, would not allow that to happen).

@@David-ni5hj Yeah, the "protests" whereby they blockaded roads, firebombing shopping malls, threw nails on the streets, arson to railway and subway stations, occupying an airport forcing it to close for two days and stopping passengers from boarding flights, beating citizens up for speaking up against their violent behaviours. This is the so-called "freedom and democracy" protests when the rioters killed and set people on fire who opposed their anarchy and violence.

Your lack of knowledge on the subject is stunning. Hong Kong was a sparsely populated island that the Chinese empire ceded to Queen Victoria's government in the 1841. The island itself became prosperous and populous due to the administration of the British empire (yes, not perfect but compare against China at the time). Expansion into Kowloon, then into the the New Territories related to the success and prosperity of the administration of the island by the British. Chinese, Indians and many others flocked to the colony because it was ordered with rule of law, protection of the British Navy, and economic aegis of the British Empire. Contrast that against the lands to the north of the colony. Until just recently, there was large encampments of Chinese flooding the border to escape the dictatorship of the CCP.

Under British colonial rule, a form of social hierarchy existed whereby all senior positions were given to white Caucasians and the governor was appointed directly from London.

Hong Kongers did not elect Chris Pattern to be its governor. He was not born here, did not grow up here, does not speak Cantonese or write Chinese. He was appointed by Her Majesty, after losing his seat in Bath in an election. British people democratically voted him out and he was then imposed onto Hong Kong people to “advocate democracy”, which was never offered to Hong Kongers in the 150 years of British rule.

Don't cry over spillt milk. He tried to cram all the reforms he could make before the deadline in '97. Plus, the most of his reforms were revoked by the CCP who established a parallel "Provisional LegCo" that replaced the LegCo that was meant to transition to Chinese rule.
