have this same issue with our sliding door on our rental house, here in NC. It's for our back deck - and we get those torrential rains here quite often. Our rental company replaced the old sliding door with a new sliding door (even though we requested french doors or something. But it still happens even with the new door - the rain usually comes in from the west - moving east/southeast - and that is the direction the back of the house faces. The only way I've found to make it better is shove a towel in the track on the inside, to block the rainwater from seeping into the inside track from the outside. :(

Good point all doors need protection from driving rain.Every winter I tape clear poly on my slider screen and close it when it's blowing rain.A cheap and tacky fix but it works.I wish somebody made a affordable slider storm door!!

Installing overhang won't help much either, as that assumes that the rain will come straight down, vertically hitting it. Sometimes rain is driven by strong winds and it hits the house sideways like a fire hose. It is not possible to keep it out. Home construction remains to be a joke and so are the building codes.

I'm in SoFla and my 8'x8' slider is unprotected and allows moisture to intrude. Lennar is the developer and surely they realize some kind of overhang is necessary. So, I will dedicate myself to dealing with this by adding that overhang.

I have a deck door that opens in and I do have a overhang, we just had LVP flooring put in and the last big rain I had small amounts of water sitting on top of the floor. 😫 I don’t know where it’s coming in. I should have taken pictures. I guess I need new?

I'd also like to see what Jim did. Can you share pictures of the awning/ roofing element that is above your sliding glass door?

My sliding door sinks at one end and the roller has completely come out so when we lock it it fall down out of lock handle and is no longer locked. Do we need to replace the whole doors and track or can we replace roller and maybe lift sliding rail? We can not afford to have someone replace the whole thing.

Where I live in France they use small overhangs made of iron and safety glass (in decorative shapes) on very old homes. On newer homes and buildings with sliders and no overhang, they use exterior shutters or rolling storm doors which divert the rain quite well and provide sound and wind insulation as well as security. I'm always surprised that they haven't become more popular in the US.

We don't need them we use sill pans ,if a door entry is installed properly there's no need for any outer protection

Yes this! Especially sliding patio doors. They need a pan under them with a 1/2” lip and sloped slightly outdoors.

Is this a part you can buy at home depot or is it a pretty custom setup? I need some kind of seal that will let the rain hit the sliding glass door, run down it, hit the seal and roll off the threshold to the outdoors rather than filling up the inner door track and overflowing into the house. But can't be high enough that you trip on it. What part(s) do I need? Thanks!

Just give a subtle slope to outer side, to the base (marble or whatever) on which the sliding window or door is resting. You can even put some silicone on the inner side 👌

I have a spotless tract, but searching for answers as to why my sliding patio door is getting impossible to push open and close, especially with arthritis in both hands. I am a disabled widow and have always fixed and repaired all sorts of jobs to maintain my home. But this problem has got me to the point I'm lost as to what to do. I will have to hire someone to fix this project which I do feel water has leaked underneath the track causing this problem. Help??

Try rubbing candle wax on your track. If that doesn't fix it you can have a a track cover installed for way cheaper than a new door.

I live in a very windy, drifty, rainy area of Idaho. I came looking for answers regarding this in a fairly new house. We don't know why, but there is 2 slidding glass doors on the west wall. Rain is coming in all of the windows and doors on the south and west sides of this house. I don't know what to do.
