How to Draught Seal an Aluminium Sliding Door or Window | by ecoMaster
Learn how to seal your aluminium doors or windows
Do you have aluminium sliding doors and windows that you find are quite draughty? When they're new, pack-delivered with brushes that stop draught, but over time they wear out and you end up with significant gaps around your door and windows. EMV can be a good solution for these. Hi I'm Maurice Beinat, I'm technical director at ecoMaster and today I'm going to show you how EMV can be used to stop draughts around aluminium sliding doors and windows. There's really three places where EMV can help with draught. The first is along the bottom and the top. In here is a brush that's now worn out. So there's a good gap between the brush and the face of the door or window. So we can use EMV to actually make up that gap and seal it. The same is true of the top, but in the jamb here sometimes can be quite draughty as well. So the EMV can actually be fitted into the jamb itself so that when the door closes, the EMV makes a seal on the edge of the door or window. So let's take a look at actually doing that now.
Now that we're sure that the face of the door is clean, let's fit the EMV. So the first thing is to actually push it into that space. Here we go. And we're going to start at this end. We're going to pull a little bit of the liner out and then push it in, push the EMV in and we're very carefully going to pull the remaining liner out of the EMV.
Well, we've fitted the EMV now, we've taken the liner out carefully and the next part and final part is actually just to get a table knife and put it in the V and push it on to the actual door, just to make sure that the adhesive is well stuck to the door. If the leading jamb of your window or door is worn, and you find that the door is a bit rattly when it's closed, then the EMV can be fitted actually into the jamb. You'll want to fold it over first and fit it in just like that, into the jamb so that when the door closes, it's going to seal up onto the EMV. I'm going to do that now so that you can see what it's like. Make sure that you fold the EMV before you start. As always take some liner out, starting at the top, pull the liner out and keeping it tight, keeping a tight grip of the EMV. Just press it on ... at the bottom, just make a crease and cut there and remember as always press it all out really well.
Nice. And there you have it, a perfectly draught-proof aluminium sliding door or window. So draught sealing an aluminium sliding door or window is that easy. Just get some EMV treat the bottom, the top and the leading edge there in the jamb, if you need to.

Hi Ivan, because there is no standard aluminium sliding window / door - the trailing edge solution is different from type to type. We don't have a standard solution for that yet. Cheers ecoMaster

I watch this video because I have exactly this problem with my sliding patio doors. I am a single household and a disabled pensioner too However I have got no idea what EMV is and the guy never explain what it was. I never thought I would ever see the day that I missed my ex-husband. 😂😂😂

Hi there, I’m interested in buying this product. Can you please make another video on how to install these on the aluminium sliding doors. This video doesn’t show the process in detail and the camera angles are not good. It’s difficult to comprehend how to do it properly.

Will this work to keep water from coming in as well? If not, can you recommend a solution? My back porch floods in heavy rainfall and I sometimes have water come in around the door. Thanks.

Hi Josfos, If the door is being flooded with water, then there is probably no seal that will make it waterproof. If the water is from splashing, rather than flooding, then the EMV would probably be of assistance. It has been designed for air leakage, rather than water proofing. Cheers!
Will this system work on sliding timber doors too? I assume so?

Hi Judy, Sliding timber doors are much more challenging that aluminium. There is no standard timber sliding doors so EMV Slim Line seals may or or may not improve the air tightness of your door. To get an airtight seal on a timber sliding door, you could need to have a professional draught proofer assess your doors.
wouldn't it make more sense to put the v upside down? so it catches the drafts on the way in? My worry is that the wind will blow and as the bottom of the V is facing the wind (so to speak), it will blow past it. When you do the vertial, you do it this way round. Why not do it that way round on the bottom? I am confused.

Hi Stretch, Thanks for your question. The reason we suggest installing it with the V facing down is that in more instances you will make a more effective seal on the door (utilising the brush that comes with the door). Your idea is a good one if you are expecting gale force winds underneath your sliding door. Given the design of most sliding doors, that is less likely. Cheers

EMV is warranteed for 2 years. It should last much longer than that though.

This is a good video however there seems to be an unlimited amount of patio door types, styles and weather stripping to go with each! It is very discouraging trying to fix the stripping on my doors as whatever I buy doesn't fit right and that's just for my patio door! Nevermind for the doors. :(

One question. If the EMV is folded over on the base of the door, doesn’t it catch in the corner when you’re sliding the door open?

Hi Puff, That is a very astute question. No, it won't catch because the EMV goes the full length of the bottom track, which includes the sides of the door. As the door opens, the EMV will be compressed just a little more as the door edge slides by. That is such a good question, we will add it to the FAQ on the EMV product page. Cheers!

Hi Bonnie, Good question! EMV is a slim line seal that can draught proof gaps of variable widths - from 2mm to 7mm. It is folded in half, into a V shape, and can then be self adhered to the fixed frame of a window or door. It is suitable for door frames, particularly internal doors, aluminium sliding doors, aluminium sliding windows, casement, awning or wind out windows. It comes in Brown, White and the very popular Clear - oh, and there are discounds for volume purchases. I am not sure about the part of your question about a steamer to clean. :-(
