Tyson made his career beating less than stellar fighters, blown up light heavyweights and many tomato cans. When he fought skilled boxers who were legitimate heavyweights, he had a difficult time. Douglas was the first, but then came Hloyfield and Lewis. They all pummeled him.

But that’s America for you, let 25 years pass, and suddenly you are reimagined as a stellar athlete and model human being. Tyson is suddenly one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and a really cerebral and inspirational athlete. What a joke.

About two months before the Tyson-Douglass fight, I was walking thru the parking lot of a very popular night club in LA Ca when I saw a crowd of people surrounding a limo that was stopped. I assumed that it was a celebrity and walked over to see who was in the limo. The windows in the back of the limo were rolled down and there was Mike Tyson in the limo with a pose. Mike was drunk as a skunk and chatting up the pretty ladies outside the limo. I was a huge boxing fan at the time and said to myself, "This mother f---ker has a fight coming up soon, what the hell is he doing getting drunk." Just before Cus DMato died he stated in an interview that Tyson would be one of the best heavy weight champions, if there were no distractions. At the time of the Douglass fight Tyson was way past distractions. You can say that Tyson lost all of his fights to Tyson.

When Mike Tyson started facing top level fighters he started getting his ass whipped. It’s not a coincidence. But let’s say that you’re right, even if that’s the case, it’s still undeniable that he lost because of the stupid ass decisions that he made. Why is it that when fighters and athletes make horrible decisions, you people look the other way and act like that’s not a part of what makes a fighter great in the first place? Rocky Marciano retired undefeated because he made good decisions from the day he got the belt to the day he retired. He kept himself in incredible shape and never believed the hype surrounding his legendary power. How you think and the choices you make are part of what makes you great. It’s not just athletic ability. That this has to be explained to you is rather sad.

Don King knew that Holyfield was going to beat Tyson and banked on Tyson making an example of Douglas to intimidate Holyfield. As we all know, that ploy didn't work (Holyfield then defeated Douglas). It was the decision to leave Catskills for Kings management, under pressure from Givens and King himself and his messed up personal life. Those factors are most probably what derailed his career. It heavily impacted his commitment, work intensity, and discipline of mind in training. After he left Catskills in late 1988/ early 1989 his aura of invincibility was living on borrowed time especially after he fired Rooney. All he had was a delusional attitude that he was Superman and could party, miss training sessions and still be a great fighter and even that mindless attitude was encouraged by his wife Givens and Don King. You know what, i have a problem with the alleged Rape case, against Mike, not saying it isn't true, rape it a really bad thing, and i do feel for the victims... But only an animal in the jungle, would do such a thing, and Mike was King of the Jungle, i don't even think, that he knows, just how many women he has slept with, i know it must be hard for all of you to understand, but why would he rape someone ?? When he literally just had to snap his fingers, and Puf, here you go Champ, if you don't like, send back, and we'll send new, or he could just go for a walk, within 500.000 meters, he would find someone to sleep with, it just doesn't make any sense to me, and it doesn't have to... - Stay Blessed - - Peace - 🙏❤✌

Even if Tyson didn’t rape her, the fact that he put himself in those kinds of situations and lived that kind of lifestyle is part of the reason he was never a great fighter and shouldn’t be considered as such. People don’t understand that part of being great in any sport is the decisions you make, not just the athletic ability that God imbues you with. Tyson consistently made the worst possible decision as his career progressed and he deserves the ignominy that comes with that. Instead we just have all these morons who continue to run interference and make excuses for his idiocies. Blame everyone but Mike Tyson if that’s what you want to do but I don’t fall for it. As for why he would rape her, did it ever cross your mind that Tyson, getting all these women whenever he wanted, gave him a sense of power that made someone refusing his desires unimaginable to him? Maybe he felt that this woman had no right to say no to him. A man’s ego can play all kinds of tricks on his morals. That should be obvious, but Mike Tysons fans rarely if ever think rationally about anything.

No, Mike Tyson just wasn’t as great as people think he was. It’s not a coincidence that when he actually started facing top shelf fighters in their prime, he was consistently being beaten,. If you think beating Larry Holmes way past his prime is some kind of proof of Tysons greatness then I feel for you. This senseless, latter day reconsideration of Mike Tyson as some kind of all time great, heavyweight is pure comedy. I guess that’s how it works with celebrities though. No matter how badly these people behave or how thoroughly they humiliate themselves and disgrace the sport people will look back and try to reimagine them as geniuses and all-time greats. It’s completely delusional.

Right after this fight Douglas went back to being the underachiever he had been. He came into the Hollyfield fight out of shape and Evander easily took the title. Buster faded away after that and Mike was about to begin his time in prison. If only Buster would have had the mentality to stay focused and train like hell for every fight, I think he possibly could have been a great champion. For one fight we got to see what he could do when motivated. His jab was simply amazing that night. But really everything he did was good. His legs were definitely ready for a long fight and he really dominated 90% of the fight. Tyson probably won two rounds and one of those was really even.

The biggest mistake Tyson made in his career was letting Rooney go. Rooney was HUGE for Tyson in his corner. He always had Tyson splendidly and properly trained and conditioned for his fights. Had IRON Mike Tyson ignored Don King and kept Kevin Rooney as his trainer, Tyson probably would have gone undefeated, breaking Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0, and retiring as the best ever.

No way he goes undefeated even if Rooney doesn’t leave. No way he would’ve beaten Holyfield or Lennox Lewis.

@@MaximusWolfe respect to Holyfield and Lewis. For sure. But let's agree to disagree on both your comments. Tyson was a different animal and savage under Rooney.

This didn’t destroy anything. Mike Tyson was already going downhill before this fight.

Yes but this loss took away his mystique and everything afterward seemed like part of a protracted downfall.

Buster couldn't defend that fight and the longest fucking count mulligan.. yeah, this was way more a LOSS for Tyson than it was a win for the chump, and to think how holyfield's pussing away may have changed everything.. a younger Tyson would've beat him, he knew it.. he waited for Tyson to get some rust first..
