How BTS Won Over America

BTS is taking the American music scene by storm. The seven-member boy band from South Korea has had three No. 1 albums on the Billboard chart. The music video for their single, "Boy with Luv," broke KZread's record for the most views in 24 hours. And the group just wrapped up a six-stop U.S. stadium tour that raked in $44 million and attracted nearly 300,000 fans, according to Billboard.

BTS never tried to break into the American market, they only came when they had enough popularity here. They were personally invited to the AMAs back in 2017, BigHit didn't ask anyone to invite BTS, BTS's hard work is what brought them this far. Props to my boy Kevin.

Why are we talking about mannerism control, being weighed daily, plastic surgery, etc. when talking about BTS? This has nothing to do with them, why do we have to talk about the dark side of the Korean pop industry anytime when BTS is involved. It's like talking about the sexual abuse and pedophilia in Hollywood when you make a segment about Tom Holland, it's totally uncalled for.

And I think most of the Army have same story. Nobody goes around following anyone.... And if BTS have gained that much followers and the follows stayed with them there must be something in them that hooked everybody, they must have discovered them somewhere, there must be something before they hit the follow button but who is going To make all the people realise it.

Yeah, this is so true. I love how they said it's due to teens and BTS being something new and different from what others are listening to. It's not just teens wanting to listen to something different. Not every ARMY is a teen. We're so diverse it's insane. I mean my store manager saw the BTS game on my phone and was surprised I was a fan...then said her friend, in Texas, is a fan and flew to New York for the Met Life concert - both days. Her friend is in their 50's. I'm 32 myself and I'm ARMY. We're all over the place age wise and I love it. I don't feel like some outsider for being my age...I feel like I'm in the middle somewhere and I like it.

  • @lulu9827

This video makes you think they did their research and then you realize they didn’t. It feels like they took away every bts fact and twisted it to their narratives, and by twisted it, I mean change it completely to whatever they want. If you want to talk about the kpop industry then do, if you want to talk about bts then do, if you want to talk about their connection and how bts holds in the kpop industry then do, but dig deep enough and understand both those subjects. One of the only truths in this video is the fact that army is protective and passionate and you’ll find this comment section filled with this proof. Bts didn’t just pop up to fame, they definitely built it up, and it’s not similar to any western boyband, nor a kpop group. SNS was definitely a way many got introduced to bts, but we are not here for some instagram models or youtubers, not that there is anything wrong with that, but we’re here for the music. Bts started SNS because tv was simply not possible for them, and it’s not even a matter of waiting in line, the gatekeeping is heavy, it wasn’t gonna happen and they needed an alternative, so that’s that, but the shocking fact that many people do not know is that fans signed up for a lot of those services for bts, and it created a community for the fans, surprisingly they brought us to social media, not the opposite, and I could go on forever about the other things in this video but I’m not going to because I know others will.

A lot of people always forgetting about their MESSAGE. Yeah they make great hits about loving your significant other and heartbreak, but their LYRICS are so personal and meaningful. Their lyrics are also very relatable, bringing awareness to mental health such as depression, anxiety, suicide, ocd, female empowerment, pressures that young people face to be someone everyone expects us to live up to despite having our own voice and rebel against expectations, bullying...the list goes on. We all experience these emotions that most often people tend to hide from others, and many western music don't open up about these bottled up feelings...and that's one of the many reasons why BTS so popular! Not only are they making great beats, but they bring awareness to important messages through their lyrics. But the most powerful message is learning from your mistakes and to "Love Yourself", but that's another essay to write. I can go on and on about why we ARMY's stan, but I'll just end it off here lol

My dear armys really supporting this vdo? Im gonna list out the blatant flaws on this one. 1) the notion that they are popular as they are EXOTIC. Kpop has always been there, which is a different culture and something new bt which never blew up worldwide. So that argument is proved wrong. 2) gangnam style made kpop global: gangnam style was a trend, a one hit wonder which made kpop more stereotyped. 3) the whole video makes it look like “SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT” made BTS popular: other KPOP grps had more promo than bts thanks to their huge companies. So why did only BTS become popular? 4) comparing BTS with the whole notion of “MANUFACTURED KPOP INDUSTRY”. Thats the one biggest difference that sets apart BTS from the kpop industry. They are not controlled puppets who sing and dance to the songs company provides them with. They write their OWN songs and lyrics, have indepth conversation with fans abt the making of their albums and artistry. So the vdo makes it look like BTS are less than artists 5) the most important reason bts went popular : SINCERITY, PASSION and a mindset to talk about things that actually matter in ppls lives. Simple. (Pls note: the dkdktv guys arent the most credible ppl you can interview) Im not completely debunking the video. There are some good parts and research gone into it but so many things that are gonna give wrong views about BTS to the general public.

And what does Seotaji & The Boys got to do with BTS making it big internationally? I'm an Asian and live in Asia. I've known abt kpop since the 90's but have never heard abt this Seotaji group until BTS sings "Come Back Home". That D&*ny guy mentioned Seotaji as though just because Seotaji got popular for singing abt social issues, therefore that's why BTS also bcomes famous. Well... hello...! ARMYs around the world knew how Korean gp perceived BTS when they first started! They even ridiculed BTS's name. Even last year, 2018, BTS was still not well received by Korean gp (just watch videos made last year where youtubers went around asking the public what they think abt BTS. Many said they didn't know much abt BTS). BTS finally receives its well-deserved recognition by Korean mainstream media only this year. This docu is quite haphazard, the content is like a mashup of this and that put together just to meet a deadline.

Laili Johari exactly..BTS achievements have been done right. But suddenly they just want to club BTS into the “KPOP BOX” which they still arent. As we can see kpop is still building groups as if its a doll house and arranging their artists according to company rules..they are NOWHERE near BTS in achievements unlike the mediaplay most companies are playing which is mostly build around BTS. Im not disrespecting seo taji. He was like pioneer of something new in kpop but IN korea. Imagine how tired we are of repeating like a broken record that BTS and ARMY are NOT spokespersons of whole kpop.🤦🏻‍♀️ Even BTS themselves told that to reporters. They are happy to spread korean culture and language around the world but the TAG of KPOP will only bring them down.

@@Arrjae707 Seo Taji & the Boys were the start of what is now considered Korean pop. Most Koreans trace this style of music back to them. Korean music was different before them. Mentioning Seo Taji & the Boys is just giving a history of the music. Also Seo Taji were a voice for that era's youth. I have no problem with what they said in regards to them. I don't even have a problem with the mention of Psy for history context of Korean music. It's when they basically put BTS into a Kpop box and make it seem like they're just another cog in the Kpop machine industry. This should have been about all of BTS differences that makes such a huge success instead of making it seem like the only reason they broke away from the pack is because of social media which is bs. I stan BTS first & foremost because of the music, their amazing lyrics and beautiful voices full of emotion. Next it's because of their personalities & the genuine caring men they are. Everything else including how gorgrous they are is just a bonus.

Gross stereotyping and misinformation that doesn’t even apply to BTS. Shame on you and the reporters for this video. The narrative that BTS fans are all teengirls thirsting for something new and exotic is getting SO old already. If you want to talk about BTS, report about their come up story from rags to riches. Talk about their passionate, meaningful, universal lyrics and their genuine personalities. Something that isn’t about kpop, for god sakes. BTS isn’t controlled, they are grown men who make their own decisions. They are NOT perfect, they have never been perfect and they have always been open and honest about their mistakes. Their humanness is what has made them stand out over the rest of kpop in the first place. They have NEVER had plastic surgery, NOR do they feed into the delusion of playing the boyfriend role. BTS was never socially active with the intent to gain followers, this narrative is so false and sickening to fans who know this isn’t true. Their only intent for being so active and constantly releasing content was to share a connection with the people who support them. Their passionate fanbase grew because of the people they are, not because of their visuals or social media interaction BTS has always respected and treated their fans as if we are equal and not beneath them. Our celebrity-fan relationship is unlike any other.. it is unique. It’s platonic relationship in which BOTH parties benefit mentally, emotionally, spiritually. They work hard to show us how much they care too. Every member has suffered from their own pains in life, their own traumas, just like every human on earth does. The members have been so honest to share them with us and vice versa. We are open with each other, they read our letters, we read theirs. They know their fans and we know them. We have both learned from each other and helped each other grow in many ways personal to us, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Theses are all the things that make BTS unique and that’s why BTS is popular worldwide, not all of kpop.. And THIS is the reason why BTS is so popular, not all the bullsht you mentioned in the video

Though BTS had its fan base in South Korea following their debut, the group met greater fame and recognition internationally in a more significant way after their WINGS era and their first billboard top social artist in 2017. I witnessed it all from becoming a fan in September 2016. I was hooked and binge watched all existing content at the time and witnessed the massive growth they experienced during this period onwards. All I can say is WOW. BTS are a rare gem and they deserve the recognition. If one genuinely does proper research, watch their content, channels, MVS, storylines, messages, choreographies, world concert fancams and behind the scene episodes, you will understand WHY they are so big and popular. And I cannot stress enough on how the fandom is DIVERSE. The demographic is diverse. Young and old, lawyers, teachers, doctors, psychologists, students... the list is extensive. I’m certainly no teenager (in my 30’s and a proud fan).

I really would've appreciate it if you added the right info in the video, how bts started in 2013 how nobody knew them how people looked down on them and said that they betrayed hip hop because they became a group instead of performing underground hip hop as they originally planned, if you talked about how people called them girls just because they wear makeup which is completely normal many male celebrities wear makeup it's normal in the industry, how people say they had plastic surgery and that's completely false you can just make some effort and look at their childhood photos they look exactly the same also when they started they barely had money to go on the bus let alone do surgery, how they literally recorded their dark and wild album in a garage, how childish fans of other artists always blame bts of copying other artists concepts and music, how people see them artificially rather than the hardwork they put in writing producing their music rather than them dancing 15 hours a day just for a performance, how bts was ignored for years and now that they finally achieved their dreams people say they don't deserve it, and the most annoying thing is that they consider them kpop , kpop industry was against bts for years just because they aren't from a big company and they don't want a small group to succeed more than their manufactured artists, kpop fans and bts fans were never one they always hated on bts and trended hate hashtags against bts and I would never forget what they've done to bts that's why I hate fandom culture because it's so toxic

So from what DKDKTV explained, they were never informed that this was supposed to be about BTS, they were asked questions about KPOP in general. That leads me once again to the fact that western media still doesn't understand that the reason why BTS is at the top is because they defy the stereotypes of the idol industry. You're never going to understand and make an accurate representation of who BTS is and what they stand for if you base your research on KPOP instead of BTS themselves. It's once again, a missed opportunity to properly depict the group and talk about the biggest factor in their success which is their music, that for some reason the media avoids making a deep analysis of. This is not terrible, to be fair it's better than most articles. However you found a way to drown BTS in prejudice at the end( you were not specificaly talking about BTS but those who don't know the group won't make the difference), while completly missing the point of the group even though you were on the right path when mentionning Seo Taeji.

Literally this video is just trying to fit bts into the conventional kpop group/idol, it is not like that BTS shares a lot of content on their social media because they want to, this little details makes the equation different, they are not like any other idols. I've known kpop for almost 10 years and let me tell you : there was no one like them, they talk about real issues, they discuss what to talk about on their next album, they literally write and produce their music not because they have to do it but because music is their life and we can feel that, we can feel their passion for music and for improving in a lot of aspects . I never knew music could change someones life till I met BTS. Also, ARMY as a fandom is different from others too, we have our problems but we are a family. if some fans leave because some of the members are dating then they were not really Army. I’d never thought I had to with every other Kpop bands before, but BTS literally made me buying albums, getting merch, and even creating a fan account on social media! They really changed my mind. Like there’s something in them, that I don’t find on any other Kpop artists, even any artist in general. And my admiration and adoration to them keep getting stronger year by year. Why bts is the best(seven resons why i stan them) 1) they're talented beyond belief If you've ever chanced upon a bts performance online, you'll know what we're talking about.these boys will leave you breathless with their ability to own the stage while it's a given that they should know how to sing, dance and rap,all seven members also produce and and write their own songs (kings) 2) they're family After living with each other for the majority of their lives- weathering every hardship and celebrating every win. together, their band goes beyond just having a good group dynamics.thay know each other's strengths, struggles and how manage each colourful personality in the group, which allows them to have that undeniable chemistry on and off stage that we love to see. 3) they're extremely down to earth people Despite bagging awards locally and internationally, spelling out stadiums and topping the charts left and right ,at the care of bts is still the same group of (extraordinary) boys who get excited over the little things ,while it's no secret that these boys have worked hard to get to where they are, they never forget their fans- from their ending mentions during concerts down to the songs that they've written and produced, they've dedicated just about everything to army 💜 (4)they keep it real Authenticity is something that's hard to come by these days, put with bts,you can expect nothing but that, they're unapologetically real and not all avers to showing all sides of themselves, from the cute and funny moments on and off stage down to the struggles and vulnerabilities they face as a group and as individuals.a constant reminder that they're just as human as the rest of us.☺️ (5) positive massage) In times when you're looking for more things to hold on to , their words give you a sense of reassurance.from thair society conscious lyrics focused mostly on the exploration of identity, positivity and acceptance to the ability of advice they give during their live streams, it's not hard to see why fans (like me) often say that bts came into their lives at a time they needed then the most . they've transcended beyond entartainment band have became a soure of comfort for 💰 (6)they socially awar In 2017,that launched a global compaign in partnership with UNICEF, building on the mantra love yourself, which the group's frontman,rm (our leader) says is the care of BTS identity.since it's launch, the campaign has raised over 1 million in donations and was quickly followed by an invitation to address the United Nations general assembly in new york city the year after.being no stranger to social injustices, the group also spoke up and made a notable donation to the #black lives matter movement that happened early this year triggering a ripple effect amongst their fans who matched their 1million donations to the cause

And also (7)they are bring together Beyond their breathing performances and visuals, the group has successfully cultivated a world wide community of fans that have came to embrace their massage of positivity and acceptance.despite mush of their content being in Korea, bts has created an avenue to look past the language barrier, eliminating vand biases of what people deem good music is and what it should be performing a deeper connection with anyone who is willing to listen.at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who you are, where are u from.....there are seven boys in South Korea named Kim namjoon, min yoongi, Kim seokjin, jung hoseok, park jimin,Kim taehyung,Jeon jungkook are here and who understands you while seven resons are barely enough bro talk about why bts is the best,we acknowledge that there needs to be an eighth....and that's A.R.M.Y ! As the boys say "we are not seven with you .borahae 💜💜🙆🙆🙆🙆🙆#army#bts forever 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Not only teens listen and love BTS. I am over 50 and I love them. Their music covers issues such as bullying, loving yourself, mental health and other important issues. RM's speech at the UN, their connections to UNICEF to stop bullying. The fact that BTS will no longer be followed or loved if they find a significant other I do not believe will be true. Maybe for some of the younger crowd, but not those who love them for who they are. And it's not just music, it's RunBTS, the fact that they share the behind the scenes making of their videos, the stories behind the videos. They share music they listen to, books they read, their fears as well as their achievements. They make me feel like a distant friend who is there to support them in everything they do, and I really believe that they appreciate that support. They really helped my depressed teen to love himself and he is so much happier now, I will forever be grateful to them for that. I hope some day that I can thank them in person.

Why do they think BTS' Twitter account is such a HUGE deal when it comes to their success? They say things like how they constantly put out new content on social media, but that actually kinda pissed me off cause it shows that they don't really understand what's going on. There have been times where BTS don't post for weeks and there have been times when one of the of the members just spams my timeline. Literally it's just a Twitter account; there's nothing special about it besides the fact that they had more freedom than most other idols at the time. They also clearly don't know how little Jungkook used to post where we actually made memes about how he possibly deleted twitter off his phone💀 My point is, other artist are active on social media WAY MORE than BTS and interact with their fans on Twitter way more, too, like actually replying to them and stuff, but for some reason they only mention the 'power of social media' when it comes their success. It's almost like they're watering down the cause of they're success. Why is it that when it comes to BTS, social media is apparently their main cause of global domination, but when it comes to other western artists (or any other Kpop groups for that matter), social media has nothing to do with their career?

😂😂😂😂 BTS became the only group at the Billboard to achieve No. 1 albums in less than a year. This record was previously held by The Beatles back in the 90s. BTS was able to break the band's record of 11 months and a week in just under 11 months.

Proud 62 yo ARMY. Some of the members have been together for 13 years. BTS will celebrate 10 years since their debut in June this year. And yes, they are still together. While two members are already performing their mandatory military service and the others will follow, they have not broken up. The guys are all putting out solo albums under the BTS name. For example “Jimin of BTS.” The three rappers also have great solo albums.

Every generation has their own fav boyband/girlband..this is their time.. After 20 years another generation will love another artist... They will be famous for a short term, but will never reach Mariah, Whitney, Queen, the Beatles level of stardom...

I really wish people would stop hating on Danny Kim. What he said was taken out of context. He doesn't hate BTS. Even if it was true, bashing on someone isn't exactly the message that BTS promotes. This type of ignorant aggression is why our fandom gets called toxic so often. :(

Will always be here for BTS because : Of their songs, i.e. messages and the melody like I lit rally love the melody esp those side tracks. : The person they are I mean their characters and their vulnerability. : Their underdog story [I could somehow relate] : and of course the BU (BTS Universe)
