Arch doesn't read lore that's less than 10 years old. That's why you don't see any stories about primaris or Guilliman (no matter how well written or actually good stories there are, just because of an arbitrary cutoff point in his head, about what makes "good lore"). Keep in mind he is nowhere near the retardation levels of Gamza or the outer circle it's still kind of a turnoff.

Give them a huge points value too. I liked the old 'movie space marine' rules they put in a white dwarf forever ago. Adapt those for a squad of traitor marines and have them fight a regular army. If you don't know what those rules were, it gave the average power armoured tactical marine terminator armour's resistances, more than tripled their wounds and made every single frag grenade into a small blast template weapon, among other things. With 10,000 years of experience and vast augments and "gifts" from being steeped in the warp they AND their chaos infused equipment is a match for all the new shiny primaris stuff. Although I fear they will just make a bunch of primaris chaos marines or stick with "veterans of the long war" instead.

Let's not forget all the "special Marines" of the big 4. Plague Marines are easy enough, although there is a difference between a follower of Nurgle, one blessed with the mark of nurgle and a full fledged Plague marine, not every Plague Marines has to be with the Deat Guard. Same for Berserker, although the nail is what makes the World Eater different from all other Berserkers. Noise Marines need the blessings of Slaneesh to be able to us the Sonic weapons. Give a blast Master to any Havoc and it wouldn't fire. Rubric Marines are different. It isn't like the Rubric is being recasted everytime an Astarties follows Tzentch. Thing is Ruberic Marines could be reconstructed. All you need to do is find enough of the dusty remains reseal it inside the armor that was broken and like that it is reanimated. Now the armor and dust might not need to all come from the same son of Magnus, which adds to the torment and madness of the Marine. Also scouring the galaxy for a single spec of dust is madness and only an aspiring champion blessed with visions of thr lord of change could ever hope to accomplish it.

Chaos Space Marines should be few and far between, and even a “weak” one should still be much stronger than a non-chaos one. Their rarity should be proportional to their strength. None of this nonsense where there are hundreds or sometimes thousands of them on the field at the same time. Not unless it’s a Black Crusade or a traitor Primarch has returned. But even then it should be less than 8,000 at the absolute most. I remember reading somewhere that Angron in his last appearance had with him something along the lines 50,000 World Eaters?! No way. Think about how difficult it is to even become a space marine on the first place for one of the more tame chapters or legions. You start with a pool of probably millions of candidates and by the time you’ve gone through assessments, training, trials, survived the surgery, everything.. you are left with only a few that were good enough to become an Astartes. Now for the World Eaters, they do duels to the death on a regular basis, if not a daily basis. So every single day you have Astartes that are dying, being killed by another Astartes. Astartes train every day for long hours so that’s a LOT of attrition. And this is before they go to battle proper against pretty much everything else (Orks, Tau, Tyranids, Necrons, Imperium, other Chaos forces, etc etc). The attrition should be staggering and always keeping their numbers low but at the same time they are earning valuable fighting experience AND gradually becoming more elevated by Chaos, which even a small amount of makes a person waaaaaay more powerful. In short notice, your candidate, now a World Eater, is basically a walking abattoir on his own.

On the table-top GW should have made them like Chaos from Warhammer Fantasy, with several full armies where you can mix and match various units from each into their armies. This would allow the CSM to be the elite backbone of a much larger army of cultists and mutants. In regard to their depictions as an unending horde, then I would say that they should still be able to continue using their own geneseed to make marines but that they have slackened standards, both for the recruits and for the use of the geneseed, where they could use less geneseed per recruit. Allowing them to make far more marines with less at the cost of overall quality. This would mean that we would see a distinct dichotomy within CSM, with the Veterans being noticeably better than their imperial equivalent while these new marines are noticeably inferior to the imperial marines, likely opting for quantity over quality with some trial by fire that Chaos is so fond of. Thus, explaining the vast armies that we so often see showing up only to be chopped to bits before the end of the book.

My personal canon on Chaos Marine geneseed implementation is that their geneseed is more mutated, and therefore more random due to warp exposure. The rejection rate is higher, but does not lead to death 100% of the time. The regular Chaos Marines are the low rollers who didn't flat out die, which is why they suck. The elite marines won the mutation lottery or got Chaos boons to compensate. Loyalist geneseed is a lot more consistent, which allows warbands to hedge their bets in case Chaos God RNG decides to tilt their rolls. Allowing the warband to maintain some troop quality if the corrupted geneseed churns out chumps who could die to guardsmen.

Travelling through the warp means that a CSM warband can end up launching raids that occur in realspace 5000 years before the warband was even formed. A single warband could actually be conducting simultaneous raids in multiple places and have no idea. Assuming that most CSM fall back when wounded a tiny number of very active Heresy veterans, say 20,000 survivors, could actually be responsible for tens of millions of attacks over the last 10k years. A large raid conducted contemporaneously with the current timeline could actually be a group of heresy veterans immediately following the heresy when the legion structure was still basically there and a small raid that happened 5000 years ago could be formed from the same group of veterans after they've felt the weight of 10,000 years pulling apart their leadership and discipline.

This is a bit long so I've tried to make it as cogent as possible. You're forgetting the ontology of sentient creatures in 40k. The soul is 100% real , can't be cloned and is required for a human, tau, astartes etc. to exist as you or I do in real life. A soulless creature is anathema to both the Matereum and Immatereum. Without a proper soul it will either be possessed by a daemon or the fabric of reality will, quite literally, bend towards it's destruction as has happened to all of the Imperium's clones. For comparison compare the Necrons who, having had their souls sucked out, become mindless automata. Large amounts of them can only even exist because of their pylons which pacify the warp around their tomb worlds. If it wasn't for the pylons the warp itself would twist realspace to erase the necrons from existence this is also why the necrons can't enter the warp. Clones in 40k are very explicitly NOT fully autonomous, self-determining creatures who are free to make their own decisions and find their own path in life. In order for Fulgrim to have fallen, his soul must have become corrupt, therefore if a portion of his soul was transferred from Naga-Fulgrim to the clone then it should still be corrupt. If his soul wasn't transferred then it is actually just a minor warp entity wearing a Fulgrim suit and should, naturally, be eager to take advantage of it's physical form to earn a place within the ranks of one of the Chaos God's minions. Clonegrim is a copy of a servant of chaos. For Clonegrim to have a pure soul that soul had to come from somewhere and it damn sure didn't come from within the laboratory of an avowed servant of Chaos whilst being observed by other, more warpy servants of chaos who all knew full well and good that Fabulous Bulge was attempting to clone, not just any old servant of chaos but one that had became a daemon princemarch, IE. more powerful than a greater daemon, which is literally the will of a Chaos God made flesh-like substance.

I'd say regarding the tabletop disconnect, that it does make sense, if we think about the phenomenon of "the last war." A real world issue especially with military training and vehicle design is veterans who try to direct future preparations around their experiences in the last war. This is how we get designs like the TOG2, built for winning the last war, but not for the future. The Chaos Space Marine, veteran of the great crusade sees what the modern Space Marine is doing as wrong, but is it? Or has the state of warfare advanced and he is stuck in an old mindset nostalgic for a time when his legions were truly on the cutting edge of galactic warfare?

That's an interesting take on it, and would help explain why ancient Chaos Veterans still lose to relatively inexperienced loyalists. but I think the idea is that Space Marines of the 41st millennium, while still superhuman, are slower, weaker and less skilled than their 30k counterparts. That this degradation happened so gradually the vast majority of the Imperium didn't notice (nor would they know enough about the astartes to compare for that matter) But some high ups, like say, Belisarius Cawl, did notice and may have sought ways to reverse it. To return the Astartes to their Prime. This is why I feel they dropped the ball on the Primaris lore so hard, they should have been set as a RETURN to the quality that they were during the crusade, not some kind of "Improvement" over it. The move to truescale marines on tabletop was botched hard in the lore front.

Late to the show but would like to add that a lot of Gene seed seems to be in circulation around the traitors as a form of currency. In the novel Blood Reaver, Talos trades a cache of the night lords gene seed for Ruven (A captive Night lord sorcerer). Also I wonder is there any lore around just how much Gene seed are stored in these vaults? In storm of Iron, after the Iron Warriors enter the gene vaults the room itself is described as being enormous. There are gene vats as far as the mortal eye's can see. Also in terms of recruitment I think it's worth mentioning that the odd successor chapter has fallen to chaos more than once. Especially those who stroll through the eye of terror trying to make a name for themselves. Let's not even mention the Abyssal crusade. *Laughs in Word Bearer*

How are new chaos space Marines made? Overzealous inquisitors and fried crispy Sororitas legs and thighs. Or something logistical idk. Corrupt gene seed maybe?

The Night Lord triology book set have a part in it. As due to causalities the warband took trying to replace their lost marine's were a challenge . By book end the warband number did grow and recover to a certain degree before the Fall of Cadia . Definitely the Night Lord triology and the series about the Bloody Gorgons . They are a interesting read when it come to how they find recruits to replace their lost marines .

I always figured most of the modern chaos marines werent even 'real' space marines. Just like anyone can bloop into a demon prince if they please the gods enough surely john bimblo just needs to impress khorne with some butchery somewhere and wakes up 3 feet taller.

It takes a hell of a lot of work to catch a Chaos God's attention let alone earning a Demon Prince transformation. It is something far beyond 99.9% of the people in the Imperium. So being an Astartes just makes the process actually doable. Not to mention no one is going to be impressed by Jim from accounting throwing a hand grenade into a nursery.

I was reading "The faultless blade" from the "Renegades of the long war" anthology and unless that book is no longer canon, Lucius can be killed only of his killer takes no satisfaction in doing so. Since he was given that power by Slaanesh, I wouldn't be surprised if any extreme emotion would cause the killer to become a host.

@@Liberty_or_Ded don’t recommend necromunda like that bro, it’s really not that good. If it wasn’t a 40k fps game, which people are starved for, it would have been forgotten as another generic shooter. I had high hopes for that plain Big Mac in 40k themed box.

Aren't modern Space Marines supposed to be generally superior to Great Crusade era Space Marines outside of certain technologies and losing some organs? I remember reading somewhere that I requires as much skill and effort to become a line Marine in a modern Chapter as it required to become a Sergeant during the Crusade. And considering that most Chapters have their own homeworlds and are not pressured all the time by being on a large crusade this makes sense.

don't think so myself. 40k is like post apocalyptic, in decline. i don't see how 30k Imperial Fists raised under Rogal Dorn would be outclassed by their 40k counterparts even without the tech advantage.

  • @rebirth5362

    @rebirth5362

@@banneduser5187 Not all GE Imperial Fists were raised personally by Dorn and 40k is not in a state of one massive crusade where you need maximum amounts of Space Marines. And speaking of Fists there's a story that during GE they turned entire male population of a hive city into aspirants. 40k tech is usually worse than 30k tech (but not always, for example 40k jump packs are better) but as far as quality of Space Marines themselves is concerned 40k is a least slightly superior.

@@rebirth5362 I don't know where you're getting this, great crusade era legions had access to pools of aspirants many times larger than current chapters AND everything they needed to train them. You could argue that certain legions wouldn't have cared a just let the enemy sort the wheat from the chaff but it's silly to think that 30k White Scars would be inferior to 40k Mantis Warriors when it's actually in the lore for many chapters that they're extremely hard pressed and under strength because they can't replenish their numbers.
