How A Small Team of Developers Created React at Facebook | React.js: The Documentary

Ғылым және технология

React is easily one of the single most popular libraries in use today. Given that it was made within a juggernaut like Facebook, you might have assumed it was always destined for success.
But what if we told you that React’s first brush with the public sphere was anything but glamorous? React.js: The Documentary brings you the full story behind the early days of React, focusing on the dedicated group of developers who helped bring it to the world stage. This story is told by an all-star cast of developers like Tom Occhino, Christopher Chedeau, Pete Hunt, Sebastian Markbåge, Dan Abramov, and many more.

Hopefully this helps the algo. Some people's understanding of fair use is just unbelievable.

React allowed me to leave the service industry after a decade and a half and become a developer that works remotely from anywhere in the world. When I saw this documentary I knew I had to watch it to know more about the history of something that so drastically changed my life. Without React I wouldn't be here, so thanks to everyone that made it happen. This journey is not over yet, there's much more to come, and I'm very excited to be a part of it.

What's to be proud of? Hooks which behave differently each time you use them together? Little nuances you have to constantly remember just not to introduce a silly error? There have long been alternatives that are 10x faster and easier to work with, that require less than a week to learn entirely and even perform twice as fast in the browser. React is a relic and should be treated as such.

To everyone involved: Thank you. There are many amazing things to like about this documentary, but one that strikes me most, is how different people and personalities are fundamental for every step of a success story. There's no React without the lone wolf, but neither without the first internal promoter, internal champion, internal articulator, leadership that allows it to bloom, external customer, on and on...

As a (open source) software engineer myself, the experience the React team had is what every developers hopes to achieve. Most open source projects are developed in the hope to ease the development of other applications, to improve them, to build a community around it and to build something together with people who have (developed) a passion for it. This project and team efforts shows that thinking outside of the box is the way to be different, gain attention eventually and get the well-deserved credit for it. I genuinely am happy for the team and their accomplishments that they've achieved over the past years. React has became a top-tier framework that offers everything we developers need in our daily life of development.

Incredible story and shows how hard it is to pull off something like this and the amount of mind blowing talent these people have. Outside facebook, Dan's talks and articles were a key contributor in people trying out React. His talks were like how a friend would teach you the night before the exam. I think it should have been highlighted more.

Loved this! I was in the second semester of my freshman year in 2020 Feb when one of my dorm mate suggested me to try learning React js. Covid happened and we came back home. I dedicated my entire days learning HTML CSS and then JS and finally React. One at a time, building small projects. Did a volunteering internship at a community to understand React better and finally landed on my first real internship at a startup that year in October. Today I am the Tech Lead of that startup (small team of 7) which is a bootstraped profitable one. Being in my freshman year, I didnt see this coming. I owe my career head-start to React! Huge thanks to the team for building such an awesome library. And thank you Honeypot for sharing the React experience with us. ❤️

This documentary literally brought tears in my eye. I owe my whole career to React. Was a C++ developer, but then somehow got into Production Support. I was stuck their for 5+ years including a Job loss during recession. Decided to become a developer again, as was trying a lot of thing like Windows app in HTML, CSS and JS. iPhone app with Swift. But one day in the big Tech company where i was working, someone saw React in my resume and never had to look back. Most people at the company were Java developer. Started doing small projects from 2016 onwards and quite good in React. At around 2017, the demand of React was huge, as it's today. But very few people knew it and so i got completed into React projects for the companies. After working in React from sort of starting, now i don't do development anymore. But teaching the next generation about thi awesome library of React, which changed the trajectory of my career. 😀

Great to see David Nolen and hear the contribution he made to bringing attention to React. I was in the cljs community at the time and heard of it through David. It was very idiomatic with how ClojureScript’s persistent data structures manage state. The performance impact on rendering they bring to React, all it has to do is compare pointers/refs to know if anything changed. Chef’s kiss.

Subbing, watching, liking and commenting - DarkViperAu mention you guys in his Rambles and how Theo (who is such a tool) backstabbed you by stealing your content and and claiming "fair use" by "reacting" to it. I despise people like that and your content is professional as was your demeanour toward Theo and his actions. Bravo!

What sticks out is React could have been killed at any point in the early days by a Boss who thought these devs were in above their heads, so facebook's internal culture seems to have been really effective at preventing this from happening.

After working on Angular for many years, when React was introduced to me, I was one of those who thought it a crap. I admit it! But when I created my first component, I saw the difference in number of lines I had to write in React vs Angular for same thing! The performance of page on DOM was clearly visible! It blew my minds and cant think of any framework now. React is going to dominate JS world for quite a some time just like jQuery did and I am sure someone is cooking something better somewhere which will be better than React! Cheers to the creaters and and contributes of this amazing piece of technology. 🤟

Beyond the framework, I think the ideas behind react are infectious and drive a very particular kind of community among the people I work with. Aligned with the React values, we try to be open-minded to take in new best practices and at the same time, we are always creating new libraries that are more reusable, testable, and maintainable so that someone else down the line does not have to do it again. I'm grateful to say that the atmosphere in my team is similar to that of the people in this documentary even though we are just building upon the abstractions that these amazing people have created.
