Then what will we use instead of JavaScript when doing front-end web development? WASM?

actually, insightful idea, so why don't we do coding together on my teammate's grandparents' lawn/backyard, and maybe invite other programmer nearby to join us in which case we can work out those computer stuff together and have new friends to communicate with them and touch the grass at the sametime? BRILLIANT

I think we need to all webpage languages. I like my text only pages, with a few hyperlinks and a few 40 kb images, that I control the layout. I loath Javascript for the page jumping, and sodomizing the user's in every aspect.

Advice I would give to my younger self (especially the teenage-me): When older people give you advice, listen to it carefully and look back to it when you grow up. Don't turn your head ignorantly thinking old people are boring and listening to life advice is a waste of time. I did exactly that and I feel very bad, because good advice comes to help when life gets tough.

Remember guys, terminator 2 final scenes "a terminator can learn the value of a human life, maybe we can do it too".

No. In the tech field the rug will be pulled out from them. Diversify skills, interests the day you start a job. Especially for a public company, you're actually less valuable than the recycling bin or supplies cabinet because your more expensive to discard.

Tbh as a programmer one of the things you learn pretty quick is starting from scratch you don't necessarily end up with anything better than what you had before. Javascript kinda sucks and trying to paper over the cracks with stuff built on top of it probably makes it worse but that's like 90% of the software (and more broadly systems both operational and technical) running the world: shit loads of technical debt baked in over the years. The web runs on JS and we're stuck with that. Most of us are just using it to pay the bills. I think we should just use more plain JS. One of the benefits of web development is that web apps don't have to be rewritten every 5 years if they're built using plain Javascript. The same can't be said for most native mobile and desktop apps. Different programming languages are interesting to play with if you have the time but vanishingly few people care about programming language design.

  • @StewSims

A lot of people responded to someone's comment saying they'll use it all the while it pays their bills by saying they're part of the problem. But like dude we're living in a world with things like climate change and a rise in fascism and the hill you want to die on is what programming language you wrote software in. I can understand not wanting to work for big tech companies on principle, but being pious about the purity of a friggin programming language? Nah just do whatever gets you paid and doesn't fund Nazis and spend more time with your loved ones. The world is too crazy to give too much of a fuck about perfect code.

Hey let's top using JS. Then what's the alternative? Typescript, Coffescript etc will be compiled into JS. And after all, practically all major browser have JS engine. Hmm perhaps WASM?

There are many developers who would use something other than JavaScript in a hot second if there was another option. Google and Mozilla are holding generations of developers hostage by not providing a way to use other languages for frontend development. Sure, there's WASM but they have made the catastrophic decision to subordinate it to JavaScript. Until Google and Mozilla pull their collective heads out of the sand, nothing will change.

JavaScript, no installation needed , 2x slower that c++ but much better than python, web(cross-platform by default) became too good.. that u don't need another language. At this point with workers, webrtc, WASM and WEB-GPU ... JS is entering god mode.

Why do we have to change it if it does the job just because you WANT a new language? If it was so awful, it wouldn't be so versatile and so readily adopted. No one's stopping anyone from inventing new languages but the new languages not being adopted tells us that they haven't solved the key problems people actually care about.
