Love it or hate it, you probably have some opinions about Ruby on Rails and its creator, David Heinemeier Hansson. Rails has been around for almost 20 years, and its creation was not a beautiful fanfare-laden affair. Angel investors did not come down from the sky to douse the team in money. So, how did we get here, and how did it scale?

Mine as well. I was doing DevOps or Admin stuff, learned some Python and was applying to developer jobs. One place was hiring for Ruby on Rails. I told them I only know some Python. They said no problem. Gave me a simple test in Ruby and then I started. I spent the first week reading a book on Ruby on Rails. It immediately clicked and I was putting in production merge requests the next week. That was in 2011. I got 2-3 jobs doing Ruby on Rails after that. I did move on, but I still do Ruby on Rails part time. DHH is such an influential developer, it is inspiring what he has done. I owe all that to his work.

I was ready to leave programming for graphic design after finishing CS studies at university (fed up with Java and corporation-oriented business domains), but Ruby & Rails reignited my love for programming and it's my profession up to this day, ten years later :)

Hey thank you, yes I've watched it like 10 times 😭😭 It's a great interview but we would LOVE a full documentary on how it surpassed competitor languages and became the foundation for so many new systems, how it differs from C and how it compares to Java. It was only 23 minutes, we're thirsty for more! 😂

hi engineers/honeypotter i'm from Indonesia with 4 years experience as Back-end Engineer, is it possible to get remote job from Europe company without relocation/visa/company based country (remote) ? sallary my country and Europe is to much different, even junior role/internship at europe still higher than this country

The DHH TypeScript controversy made me feel like he's so high on his own arrogance that he's unwilling to consider he might not be right about something. Something outside of his expertise I might add. I'd never question his judgment with Ruby but he's CLEARLY AND OBVIOUSLY someone who doesn't engage with the JavaScript ecosystem in a real way.

That trailer was terrible but I'll wait to pass judgement until I watch the full documentary. At last, we will finally get to understand what Ruby on Rails is after countless developers have lied on their resumes and included it because it looks good on paper. 😭😭 I'm willing to bet it's just another glorified application abstraction layer, similar to the scam (imo) that os React and Vue, which are just glorified jQuery competitors! (THERE I SAID IT!) In fact, there's already a guy working on a replacement called NueJS that will knock both of them out the park smh.
