How a former Nazi unit soldier got a standing ovation in Parliament | About That

There are calls for House Speaker Anthony Rota to resign after he invited a Ukrainian man who served in a Nazi unit during the Second World War to the House of Commons. Andrew Chang explains how Yaroslav Hunka was able to attend Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy's visit last week and get two standing ovations in what has become a global embarrassment for Canada.

Russia aka Soviet Union was an ally of GB and US against Nazis. (facepalm) Update: just for further context, Well, the history knows that Nazis & Soviets were bitter enemies until they made the world shocked through the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. It was a secret agreement in favor of their political interests until the Operation Barbarossa commenced in 1941. The pact became null & void

Proud Canadian here. My Great Grandfather was a munitions truck driver on the beaches of Normandy. Spent months as a PoW where he left the camp at 87lbs and only survived off eating dandelions they'd be able find around the fencing. If they were caught, they'd be humiliated and tortured, then shot on spot. Crazy how none of these people will ever have to go through anything like that. Maybe they should and then they'll understand why we take history lessons.

He should have not be in Canadian Parliament as he was involved fighting against Canada. At the same time many Ukrainians helped Germany because they try to liberate their country from the URSS. Ukrainians were in the middle of a war. Ukrainians, even members of the Galicia Division were allowed to come to Canada, only if they have not committed any war crimes. I will pray for you Grandfather as he was a good Canadian soldier. Looking at the internet I found this information. Canadian Deschênes Commission. The Canadian Deschênes Commission of October 1986, by the Honourable Justice Jules Deschênes, concluded that in relation to membership in the Galicia Division: 56- The Galicia Division (14.Waffengrenadierdivision der SS [gal. Nr. 1) should not be indicted as a group. 57- The members of the Galicia Division were individually screened for security purposes before admission to Canada. 58- Charges of war crimes against members of the Galicia Division have never been substantiated, either in 1950 when they were first preferred, or in 1984 when they were renewed, or before this Commission. 59- Further, in the absence of evidence of participation in or knowledge of specific war crimes, mere membership in the Galicia Division is insufficient to justify prosecution.[56] The commission considered the International Military Tribunal's verdict at the Nuremberg Trials, at which the entire Waffen-SS organisation was declared a "criminal organization" guilty of war crimes.[57] In its conclusion, the commission only referred to the division as 14. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (Galizische Nr.1). As Canada was not a signatory of the Nuremberg Charter, no Canadian court had jurisdiction over the offence of belonging to an organization declared criminal by the Tribunal.

What irritates me most about this story is that the situation showed complete ignorance of the history of all members of the parliament at that moment! Members of parliament are trying to blame a few people and don't want to look like fools! However, in the speech of the Canadian Speaker, there was a phrase that should have alerted everyone who knows the history of WW2 at least a little. The phrase was,'' He fought for Ukrainian independence from Russia''. Firstly, who did this veteran fight with if Russia was an ally of the USA, France, and England and fought against the Nazis? Secondly, the offended members of the parliament of Jewish origin should have known that four large concentration camps(Auschwitz camp, Stutthof, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbruck) were liberated by Soviet soldiers. Thirdly, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and could not be its enemy but fought together with the Russians against fascism. In my opinion, the question automatically arises: WHO DID THIS VETERAN FIGHT WITH?

I'm interested in knowing what exactly they thought they were clapping for, since they surely understood the history. If they did understand, then is their role to simply mimic the politicians they serve in all respects, right or wrong? Is there a middle ground they could have take, e.g. stand but not recognize by clapping? If the answer is to simply blindly mimic politicians then what exactly is their leadership purpose?

From where did the name come that was given to the speaker? Someone had to recommend it to him. Was it the PMO or somewhere else?

Wait a minute. Who wrote that speech and who reviewed it? The speaker looked surprised reading it. It takes 10 sec of reading to realized that there is something wrong with that speech....

The irony is any of you trust any of the politicians left right or centre. I don't vote for a party because I think they will make Canada better. I vote for the party that I think will do the least amount of damage while in office left right or centre
