Russia fought alongside germans until 1941. WW2 started due to german and russian collaboration. Germany betrayed russia after 1941, this is when jews (most bolsheviks were jews) started being exterminated on mass scale in poland and ukraine

The the 14th Galicia Division was not only an SS division but one of the most cruel. But what we saw in the Canadian parlament is no surprise if we remember that the Canadian Deputy Prime Minister is the grandaughter of one of the many members of the SS Galician Division that found a safehaven in Canada after WWII.

Proud Canadian here. My Great Grandfather was a munitions truck driver on the beaches of Normandy. Spent months as a PoW where he left the camp at 87lbs and only survived off eating dandelions they'd be able find around the fencing. If they were caught, they'd be humiliated and tortured, then shot on spot. Crazy how none of these people will ever have to go through anything like that. Maybe they should and then they'll understand why we take history lessons.

The Canadian Deschênes Commission of October 1986, by the Honourable Justice Jules Deschênes, concluded that in relation to membership in the Galicia Division: 56- The Galicia Division (14.Waffengrenadierdivision der SS [gal. Nr. 1) should not be indicted as a group. 57- The members of the Galicia Division were individually screened for security purposes before admission to Canada. 58- Charges of war crimes against members of the Galicia Division have never been substantiated, either in 1950 when they were first preferred, or in 1984 when they were renewed, or before this Commission. 59- Further, in the absence of evidence of participation in or knowledge of specific war crimes, mere membership in the Galicia Division is insufficient to justify prosecution.[56] The commission considered the International Military Tribunal's verdict at the Nuremberg Trials, at which the entire Waffen-SS organisation was declared a "criminal organization" guilty of war crimes.[57] In its conclusion, the commission only referred to the division as 14. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (Galizische Nr.1). The terrible crimes of the Ukrainian 14th SS-Volunteer Division "Galicia" are well documented. They are being honored by many Ukrainian nationalists. Since 2010 every year on 28 April a march is held to celebrate the foundation of the division.

At least we can be sure now that the Canadian parliament doesn't have a 7th grade education or they might have realized why applause for an SS member was not the right move.

What irritates me most about this story is that the situation showed complete ignorance of the history of all members of the parliament at that moment! Members of parliament are trying to blame a few people and don't want to look like fools! However, in the speech of the Canadian Speaker, there was a phrase that should have alerted everyone who knows the history of WW2 at least a little. The phrase was,'' He fought for Ukrainian independence from Russia''. Firstly, who did this veteran fight with if Russia was an ally of the USA, France, and England and fought against the Nazis? Secondly, the offended members of the parliament of Jewish origin should have known that four large concentration camps(Auschwitz camp, Stutthof, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbruck) were liberated by Soviet soldiers. Thirdly, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and could not be its enemy but fought together with the Russians against fascism. In my opinion, the question automatically arises: WHO DID THIS VETERAN FIGHT WITH?

I really don't like Freeland, but, we can't blame her for her grandfather, sins of the father and all, UNLESS, she respects and publicly praise him(don't know if she does/did or not).

What’s worse is this man was in a ‘volunteer’ unit, not some forced draft where he had no choice. However, as someone with family who previously worked in a parliament, tbh there is really not much of a “background check” that happens to get into these events. Have seen members bring in family and friends they “can vouch for” and that’s all it takes + the physical security check.

There's nothing to apologise for. Yaroslav Hunka, like many of his fellow Ukrainians, sided with the Nazis to fight against their common enemy, the Bolsheviks. The 14th Waffen SS Division never fought against the Allies., nor were they ever convicted of any war crimes. Canada made sure of it before they all immigrated. If anything, it is all of YOU who owe Yaroslav, and every other Ukrainain an apology.

This is wildly amazing. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of Axis and Allied forces during WWII would have had a moment of pause. This is next level incompetence.

I’m not from Canada but i was curious about that also, so i looked it up. When doing so i found that a giant statue marking those who served in that division - the 14th Waffen SS - was erected in Canada. It sits inside the St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery in Oakville, between Canadian and Ukrainian flags. Do Canadians know about that?

I am British ,and my father god rest him fought against the Nazis ,he would be turning in his grave to know this happened in Canada as he fought beside the Canadians .The thing that I cannot really understand is there is no word of a man who fought for the waffen SS who will certainly have killed a number of jews a countless others being arrested for being a member of criminal war battalion.

Don’t let Trudeau throw Rota under the bus like so many before him, he’s not alone in blame. The PM and leader of government in the house (Gould) are responsible for vetting and setting the agenda as well. All must go and if they won’t resign voluntarily then the NDP needs to do what’s best for Canada and trigger an election.

The old dirt was surprised by the standing ovation, but he was probably thinking "Damn. It took you guys long enough to realize we were the good guys!"

Western Ukraine was a hot bed of racism and atrocities against ethnic minorities in WW2. Read about the Volyn massacre perpetrated by Western Ukrainian nationalists.

This is just one example how Canadian government has no idea of any of theirs citizens background even though lot of information is available in public domain. For them all are war heroes or peaceful protester.

Standing ovations are cheap in the parliament of Canada. Everyone got that if they were invited. NO Questions Asked.

This was a really awful look for Parliament in general . How could they not know this? I get that mistakes happen but the Speaker should be held accountable and removed immediately. On the world stage it shows how out of touch the Government really is . Talk about an embarrassing mistake. They look so bad in this indirectly .

How did someone enter the parliament without any background check. This isnt just Trudeau's incompetance, but the whole government system. And those people are running our country. We are in so much trouble.

The irony is any of you trust any of the politicians left right or centre. I don't vote for a party because I think they will make Canada better. I vote for the party that I think will do the least amount of damage while in office left right or centre
