How a former Nazi unit soldier got a standing ovation in Parliament | About That
There are calls for House Speaker Anthony Rota to resign after he invited a Ukrainian man who served in a Nazi unit during the Second World War to the House of Commons. Andrew Chang explains how Yaroslav Hunka was able to attend Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy's visit last week and get two standing ovations in what has become a global embarrassment for Canada.

Russia aka Soviet Union was an ally of GB and US against Nazis. (facepalm) Update: just for further context, Well, the history knows that Nazis & Soviets were bitter enemies until they made the world shocked through the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. It was a secret agreement in favor of their political interests until the Operation Barbarossa commenced in 1941. The pact became null & void

Proud Canadian here. My Great Grandfather was a munitions truck driver on the beaches of Normandy. Spent months as a PoW where he left the camp at 87lbs and only survived off eating dandelions they'd be able find around the fencing. If they were caught, they'd be humiliated and tortured, then shot on spot. Crazy how none of these people will ever have to go through anything like that. Maybe they should and then they'll understand why we take history lessons.

He should have not be in Canadian Parliament as he was involved fighting against Canada. At the same time many Ukrainians helped Germany because they try to liberate their country from the URSS. Ukrainians were in the middle of a war. Ukrainians, even members of the Galicia Division were allowed to come to Canada, only if they have not committed any war crimes. I will pray for you Grandfather as he was a good Canadian soldier. Looking at the internet I found this information. Canadian Deschênes Commission. The Canadian Deschênes Commission of October 1986, by the Honourable Justice Jules Deschênes, concluded that in relation to membership in the Galicia Division: 56- The Galicia Division (14.Waffengrenadierdivision der SS [gal. Nr. 1) should not be indicted as a group. 57- The members of the Galicia Division were individually screened for security purposes before admission to Canada. 58- Charges of war crimes against members of the Galicia Division have never been substantiated, either in 1950 when they were first preferred, or in 1984 when they were renewed, or before this Commission. 59- Further, in the absence of evidence of participation in or knowledge of specific war crimes, mere membership in the Galicia Division is insufficient to justify prosecution.[56] The commission considered the International Military Tribunal's verdict at the Nuremberg Trials, at which the entire Waffen-SS organisation was declared a "criminal organization" guilty of war crimes.[57] In its conclusion, the commission only referred to the division as 14. Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (Galizische Nr.1). As Canada was not a signatory of the Nuremberg Charter, no Canadian court had jurisdiction over the offence of belonging to an organization declared criminal by the Tribunal.

The terrible crimes of the Ukrainian 14th SS-Volunteer Division "Galicia" are well documented. They are being honored by many Ukrainian nationalists. Since 2010 every year on 28 April a march is held to celebrate the foundation of the division.
At least we can be sure now that the Canadian parliament doesn't have a 7th grade education or they might have realized why applause for an SS member was not the right move.
What irritates me most about this story is that the situation showed complete ignorance of the history of all members of the parliament at that moment! Members of parliament are trying to blame a few people and don't want to look like fools! However, in the speech of the Canadian Speaker, there was a phrase that should have alerted everyone who knows the history of WW2 at least a little. The phrase was,'' He fought for Ukrainian independence from Russia''. Firstly, who did this veteran fight with if Russia was an ally of the USA, France, and England and fought against the Nazis? Secondly, the offended members of the parliament of Jewish origin should have known that four large concentration camps(Auschwitz camp, Stutthof, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbruck) were liberated by Soviet soldiers. Thirdly, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union and could not be its enemy but fought together with the Russians against fascism. Yeah? And what do YOU think about our on going Reconciliation efforts? Have Yourself A Seat, joker.
Speaker Anthony reading from the WRITTEN speech- "Ukranian-Canadian war veteran from the second world War who fought the Ukranian independence against the Russians and continues to support the troops today even at his age of 98" - STANDING OVATION AND A HUGE ROUND OF APPLAUSE😢😢😢. Disgusting Appalling!

Russia Slaughtering 10 MILLION UKRAINIANS, THE HOLOMODOR DOES NOT BOTHER YOU???....The fact that RUSSIA STILL WANTS TO ERADICATE THE UKRAINE does not bother you? A standing ovation for a guy who fought against people inflicting GENOCIDE on his people is what bothers you?....Oh the Irony!!!
If you watch Speaker Rota's introduction to Yaroslav Hunka, to me it is clear Rota did not write the introduction because he pauses when he says Hunka fought against the Russians. I believe this was Rota's "Oh Sh!t" moment !
Anyone fighting Russia during the Second World War were on the side of fascism. This is middle school history. How could a Canadian member of Parliament not know this ?

Don’t let Trudeau throw Rota under the bus like so many before him, he’s not alone in blame. The PM and leader of government in the house (Gould) are responsible for vetting and setting the agenda as well. All must go and if they won’t resign voluntarily then the NDP needs to do what’s best for Canada and trigger an election.
The old dirt was surprised by the standing ovation, but he was probably thinking "Damn. It took you guys long enough to realize we were the good guys!"

Western Ukraine was a hot bed of racism and atrocities against ethnic minorities in WW2. Read about the Volyn massacre perpetrated by Western Ukrainian nationalists.
This is just one example how Canadian government has no idea of any of theirs citizens background even though lot of information is available in public domain. For them all are war heroes or peaceful protester.

Standing ovations are cheap in the parliament of Canada. Everyone got that if they were invited. NO Questions Asked.
This was a really awful look for Parliament in general . How could they not know this? I get that mistakes happen but the Speaker should be held accountable and removed immediately. On the world stage it shows how out of touch the Government really is . Talk about an embarrassing mistake. They look so bad in this indirectly .
How did someone enter the parliament without any background check. This isnt just Trudeau's incompetance, but the whole government system. And those people are running our country. We are in so much trouble.

The government of Canada welcomed SS members with open arms and then sought to cover up their complicity by a phony commission. Despite the Nuremberg Trial finding the entire SS organization guilty of war crimes.
Who's here after Tuckers interview? 😂
Canadian elected officials showed the world how ignorant and/or incompetent they really are. All parties, all elected officials, and anyone else who took part in that moment should be ashamed of their actions.
