How 300 knights saved Jerusalem | Battle of Montgisard 1177

The Battle of Montgisard took place in 1177, amid the fighting in the Holy Land. King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, a young man, faced the strong Salah ad-Din, Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Despite being outnumbered, Baldwin's Crusaders, including templar knights, battled bravely.
But how could 375 knights and a few thousand infantry defeat a several thousand Saladin army?
this is the story of Battle of Montgisard

@@davidjob4909at the end of the day, it’s best to tell the story with the crusaders as the “bad guys, because like they said in the movie, when the crusaders took the city, they killed every Muslim inside, yet when Saladin took it back, he spared the Christians, despite having the perfect justification to slaughter them all. You also have to consider history, Muslims/minorities have faced far more discrimination than the white men of Europe have, and usually at the hands of the Europeans, so it’s only natural to teach the upcoming generations that the Europeans were the “bad guy”. Also at the end of the day, the crusaders were the invaders.

Knights killed all Jews and muslims, fired cities. "10,000 people were killed in this temple. In fact, if you were there, you would see that our feet were covered up to our ankles with the blood of those killed. What else can be said? no one survived anywhere; They spared neither the lives of women nor people." Foucher de Chartres ..... Knights were worse than cannibals. European history is full of blood and massacre, from the Crusaders to the colonialists, from Leopold II to Hitler. Now they support massacre in Gaza. Nothing change. that is the truth. I know a lot of people may disagree, but I have studied a lot of Saladin's battles, and he really didn't do as well as he should have. He had superior numbers and resources, but his greatest victory, Hattin, happened because the Crusaders were stupid. King Richard defeated Saladin again and again, so I think if Saladin had been asked to go on the offensive in Europe, he would have been dispatched rather easily by a number of commanders.

Most of the Muslim victories after the 8th century were due to greater numbers. Not because they were better generals or warriors, they just had the home and numbers advantage. In Iberia they did win some fights with fewer numbers but that’s a different story.

It was stupidity, look up the details of the actual battle. They marched past a water spring but refused to stop and make camp to let the army stock up on water, then marched in the desert to fight in heavy plate armor, they ended up stuck on a hill refusing to fight as they began to dehydrate and the Muslims basically waited for their morale to fall before destroying them. What they did was the equivalent of going in to a football game without drinking any water that day, and losing because you passed out at half time due to dehydration lol

In the text it is mentioned that, only 15.000 Midʹi·an·ites and other easterners remained after the great slaughter, as 120.000 men had already been killed, bringing the grand total of the initial coalition army to 135.000 men. That is not a far cry from what modern estimates calculate the Achaemenid force to have been . Furthermore, the 300 were not alone . Only during the last day, after the Hellenic coalition army found out the mountain passes had been breached, did the 300 Spartans and 1000 thespians heroically perform a rearguard action to allow the rest of the army to escape. The 300 did not hold the Persian horde on their own for the entire duration of those 3 days.

I would say that many of history’s great kings were ill in some way or another… so we can never say if “Baldwin lived a full life”, he may never have been the great leader that he was. Looking death in the face and knowing it’s soon coming changes a man.

You didnt mention 4k infantry with 375 knights. Saladins army outnumbered them but the number of his troops was exaggerated. Everyone accept that fact. (After 2 years in 1179 crusaders lost despite outnumbering ayyubid by 7 times in the Battle of Banias and lost again in the same year despite outnumbering by 5 times in the battle of Jacobs fort.)😅

This battle is not in Kingdom of Heaven. However, Baldwin IV alludes to it in his popular "When I was 16 I won a great battle" quote.
