The Crusaders greatest victory: 1191 Historical Battle of Arsuf | Total War Battle
The Battle of Arsuf took place on 7 September 1191, as part of the Third Crusade. It saw a multi-national force of Crusaders, led by Richard I of England, defeat a significantly larger army of the Ayyubid Sultanate, led by Saladin.
Following the Crusaders' capture of Acre, Saladin moved to intercept Richard's advancing army just outside of the city of Arsuf as it moved along the coast from Acre towards Jaffa. In an attempt to disrupt the cohesion of the Crusader army as they mobilized, the Ayyubid force launched a series of harassing attacks that were ultimately unsuccessful at breaking their formation. As the Crusaders crossed the plain to the north of Arsuf, Saladin committed the whole of his army to a pitched battle. The Crusader army maintained a defensive formation as it marched, with Richard awaiting the ideal moment to mount a counterattack. However, after the Knights Hospitaller launched a charge at the Ayyubids, Richard was forced to commit his entire force to support the attack. The Crusader charge broke the Ayyubid army; Richard was able to restrain his cavalry from a rash pursuit, regrouping them to achieve victory.
Following the engagement, the Crusaders secured control over the central coast of Palestine, including the city of Jaffa.

The Crusaders killed fellow Christians, murdering clerics and violating nuns, looting churches and cathedrals, sacking Constantinople the centre of Eastern Christianity... All for being the wrong kind of Christian. They also killed a lot ofJews.....Is that what you want to return to? Crusader only has positive connotations in Catholic Western Europe.

The magic of Hollywood.
The production on this is sick. It would be cool if there was a summary of the statistics of each army, like the info on starting numbers of soldiers cavalry archers, casualties, etc make it easier gauge context
If I recall correctly, there were no Palestinians in that time, it is a word much later said and read some documents that Europeans referred it to the Holy Land
ANOTHER GREAT FRENCH VICTORY The french duke of Aquitaine incindentally king of England won a battle with the french army after the return to France of Philippe, king of France that had already won the battle of St Jean d'Acre.
Imagine how well the Crusaders slept at night (when not on duty)? Exhaustion.
We need a new crusader army today
Shout out for the Medieval (One) Total War battle music.
Cant see with a danger of heatstroke that the Crusaders would be wearing heavy helmets and armour on the March.
@ASquareNarwal

If you listened to the first 2 minutes, they marched only in the morning before the heat of the day and made frequent rest stops near water. Where do you suppose each soldier would have stored his equipment if not on his person
Even with the AI voiceover, it’s just fun and informative enough to keep me watching
Interesting, but I wish you would've shown those two first knights charging the opponent on horseback followed by the rest of the Hospitaller & French knights on horseback in the rear of the column. It would have been more historically accurate than a general Hospitaller Crusader foot soldier charge.
Thank you, educational. My only grouse is using kilometers in a very historical landscape. It is a bit anachronistic.

Richard's caution followed by his full strike as elements of his army charged carried the day here. That account of the sudden mood change in the Crusader army was telling.
The most amazing thing is how the defenders couldn't raise an army to defend their land.
I doubt the uniformly worn red cross of the knighthood

Nice video but a suggestion? Your voice should be louder than the music. Thanks.
There was not a single leader on the planet that was able to conquer and hold the land forever. Think that through.
Neither side would have marched while wearing armor. They have worn cooler clothing - very lose knitted wool or even cotton. They would not have put their armor on till they knew battle was to be joined.
If only the Crusader forces maintained discipline and cohesion as well as the knightly orders, the Crusaders never would have lost a battle. Their issue was always petty squabbling between lords. Half the amount of troops and an overwhelming victory
