HOUSE TOUR | A Victorian Townhouse in Brooklyn Brimming with Character

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Interior designer Christina Salway takes us inside her charming pre-war Victorian townhouse in Brooklyn, New York.
For more extraordinary home tours, visit our website: homeworthy.com
Christina has thoughtfully designed her townhouse to honor its history and original features while infusing modern touches to ensure it never feels dated. She meticulously restored the crown molding and floors, adding antiques she has collected throughout the years.
Unlike many modern renovations, Christina chose to preserve the individual rooms that add unique charm and character to the home, rather than turn it into an open floor plan. Her townhouse even boasts an outdoor space, a true luxury in New York City.

How and why is a gut remodel even remotely 'nonsense'? Renovations falling under that category DO have value and merit depending on the state of the existing structure. No reason to harshly judge someone else's aesthetic simply bcz it doesn't mimic your own.

Finally!!! I absolutely love this tour because it’s worth the time to watch her express her feelings for interior design in a way that’s authentic and realistic. It’s not about bragging about the custom murals that cost so much money and also there’s a real home that is made for her family members. She uses practicality when she’s designing a space. She is less worried about having a showroom for promotional purposes that is just making a home that uses only luxury products that are so expensive and unaffordable to 99% of the world. Brands should not dictate how a person lives in his or her home. Thanks for sharing this video of an authentic experience of someone real and genuine. ❤

Love, love, love everything about this home. First of all, this host is lovely. What a great personality. She's definitely one of my favorite hosts/designers on this channel. Secondly, I am so happy that she didn't gut everything and completely remove all of the architectural details of the home. Kudos to them for modernizing the space while retaining all of the beautiful character. I very much enjoyed all of the art and the stories and the vintage mixed with modern pieces. I like that there are imperfections like the stone of the fireplaces are a bit crumbly at their bottoms, little details like that really make a home charming and lived in in my view. Lastly, thanks for sharing all the tips and tricks and ideas. I will be back to take some notes! I saw someone mention that this space is too "cluttered" for their taste 🙄. Whenever anyone says that about a place like this, I have to assume that they live in extremely lifeless minimalistic space. I don't see clutter, I see joyous collected stories.

OK please note: Christina Salway needs (well, actually we need her) to have a design show solely of her own. She is perfect as a host, a designer of exceptional taste, and absolutely current with a touch of whimsy, unpredictability and respect for the history of design. Oh, and also she is incredibly resourceful! She would fill a perfect slot (thinking of Sarah Richardson and Tommy) on the Magnolia Network or HGTV. This gal has the whole package!

I agree. I would have tried to find a velvet or mohair close to the color of the leather so that the only contrast is between the textures. That blue was jarring. And I like the leather chesterfield. Even a garnet red mohair would be better, that blue is just off. IMHO.

I have never lived in Brooklyn, or even in a big city, but I can imagine the creaking of the floor boards, the smell of old wood, the echo of doors closing, and people talking in this magnificent home that has been lovingly brought back to its prewar state. Kudos to this wonderful homeowner!

Love this one so much she is brilliant with her furniture purchases and her deals she got for used furniture. I have a leather couch too and would never have thought of covering the seating cushions, that was brilliant. Gorgeous cozy home. Love the painting you put over your tv. I also liked your use of blinds on the main floor windows, looked nice.

I am totally with this style of decorating. Just about every piece of furniture I own is used. as they tend to be better quality and obviously more affordable. I love that she stripped down so much of the wood. I did that to one old wooden medicine chest many years ago and it was so laborious I never tried again other than a small old pine bureau without crannies. I could never afford dipping. Some choices I don't understand like the gingham paper in the entry after having replaced the entry doors to the beautiful period appropriate ones. The area calls out for something more elegant in keeping with a brownstone entry. The over the top mirror with the modern table is jarring to me as are the blue cushion covers on the couch. I like the separation of the dining area from the living and think the newer light fixtures work well. The medallions are gorgeous. I would have gone with a warmer (more appetite inducing) color for the dining area though. The kitchen sink looks like the one we had when I was a child in Cambridge! Wish I had one now. I don't understand the dim color in the pantry unless they have super bright lighting in there to enable finding things. I don't believe there was one closet other than the coat closet. Where on earth are their clothes?? I can understand her love affair with the yard. It's been 30 years since I was sealed up in an apartment building with no backyard retreat. Could never do that again.

One of my favorite home tours! I love the collected mix of thrifted finds and the colors used throughout! Also, kudos that these two got their hands dirty and did alot of the reno themselves! Great job, you have such a lovely home!

Open concept is overwhelming when it comes to decorating. There are no walls for art and anchoring. I agree with her.

Very enjoyable to see how she’s decorated her home. I’ve seen the dining room light fixture before but this is the first use of it I truly love.
