Hot or Cold for Back Pain & Neck Pain? You’re getting it wrong.

Don’t get ice or heat for back pain & neck pain wrong! The wrong choice can increase your pain. Heat therapy can relax muscles but can also increase inflammation (so if your neck or back is inflamed it can make it worse). New research indicates that icing can reduce the healing time of soft tissue, so an ice pack for injuries isn’t a good option. But most back pain and neck pain comes from spinal joint irritation, not injury or soft tissue damage, so ice can be a good option when choosing between hot & cold pack for back pain & neck pain. How do you know if your back is inflamed though? In this video I go through the symptoms and tests to help you decide.

Thank you for this. I have a question, I have both Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. I have widespread overall body pain. I had a bulging disc at J4-J5 surgery 25 years ago. I also had bilateral knee replacements and thumb joint replacements. My hips, spine and shoulders ache, and joint replacements are in my future but I'm trying to hold off a bit longer. Because of my Fibro I also have trigger points so it's often difficult to assess whether heat or ice will help. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you.
