    MSG is sourced from seaweed industrially. Blue Cheese has MSG, tomatoes have MSG, mushrooms have just the G, no sodium just glutamate. It's nothing to be afraid of.

    Trader Joe's even has a version now, called "Crunchy Chili Onion." It's good, very salty-sweet, smokey-heat, GARLIC, and crunchy- crunchy, so it enhances your texture experience. I'd say it's been adapted to Westernized palates and food choices, so those who dislike Chinese 5 spice or the typical star anise, clove, Szechuan peppercorns etc. which usually go in chili oils will enjoy it a lot. The garlic/ paprika/ smokiness makes it suitable for adding a bit of heat and texture to things like BBQ or deli sandwiches, over things like noodles or dumplings. I don't remember how much it cost, (I think it was in the $4 range for a jar about the size of the momofoku one,) or how long they'll have it, because it's Trader Joe's and they retire stuff constantly.

I want to start making my own chili crunch, and I like the sweetness of the momfuku (I feel like it makes it a little more versatile for different cuisines), but like the heat of sichuan peppercorns. Thanks for this video. I'm a mixed-American (non-Asian) and once I made chilli oil from scratch after watching a few videos but wanted to try buying it since its a lot of work and will fragrant up my entire apartment for a good week when I do this. Since I don't use chilli oil daily or even weekly, I figured this time I'll buy something already made. I keep seeing all this hype for Fly By Jing, so I figured I'd give it a try. There's an H-Mart literally down the street in Cedar Park, TX (Austin, TX area) so of course I'm always excited to go and stock up on all my Asian condiments and ingredients - they last me a good year + I have to watch myself with cooking Asian food because I can easily get ADDICTED - all forms of Asian food and if I start eating it daily I don't think I can eat anything else! SO MUCH flavor in Asian food - YUM!

    To be honest I so far have tried 3 out of 6 laoganma, flybyjing, and momofuku and so far I have been blown away by momofuku . The OG of course is your baseline and it wasn’t bad at all . I went through a jar of David Chang’s chili crunch and it is literally a punch in the mouth flavor wise and in my opinion it could over power some dishes but it’s paired perfectly with every meal o put it with . If you’re vegan I also highly recommend it. I gave a jar to a buddy of mine and he went nuts over it . Fly by jing I only tasted once . If you want a very very good sichuan pepper taste this one is definitely for you . I am still reviewing this one and I’m happy with it but so far momofuku is high on my level of flavor Laoganma 7/10 Fly by jing 8/10 (subject to change ) Momofuku 10/10 and will purchase again .

    Good for you for debunking the MSG myth. It just won't seem to go away even through it was disproven, as I recall, in the late 70s. I might just stick with the Lao Gan Ma. Not entirely sure I would want a chili crisp that wasn't from Guizhou or Hunan. I just don't know if Japan is the place to source your chili crisp from! Perhaps I'm being unfair. As for the "Sichuan" chili crisp "Fly By Jing" ... My understanding is that Sichuan is the province for chili oil, whereas Guizhou is the home of chili crisp. Is this one of those distortions that happen when Asian foods end up being imitated abroad? On that note, I'm fairly sure I saw a very strange approach to kimchi in a store once too. P.S. Yeah, H-Mart is the best.

    Hi! Thanks for the nice video. I have never tried any chili crisp except mine. I am sorry to say that I can't eat spicy food... I do try to build my heat tolerance but it is hard to find specific low heat chili varieties in Greece. So, I have made my own chili crisp with dehydrated amarillo peppers (somehow these peppers are really mild), a little bit of chili powder, some chili flakes, garlic onion, ginger etc. I know it sounds lame but unfortunately I can't stand the heat. So, my question is: Does any of the products that you've tasted are for the low heat tolerance people like me? Should I try any of these?

    I ordered a bottle of laoganma off Amazon during the pandemic and it arrived in a way-too-big box wrapped in a single layer of thin bubble wrap. The bottle was cracked down the side and it was leaking everywhere to the point where the box it came in had those deep pizza box style grease spots. Tossed it, obviously, but this vid fired me up to want to order again. Fingers crossed 🤞

    I tried the fly by jing flavor and I didnt like the funky sludge in it. I dont think they drain the black beans. I figured out how to make the lao gan ma at home. You have to soak the beans and rinse them and then everything gets cooked separately before being combined in the flavored oil.

  • @JaesonHanNotJasonHan

    @JaesonHanNotJasonHan

    S&B is a much different profile. It adds more unique flavor whereas the Momofuku wasn't so complex. Neither is better, but depending on the food, you might choose one or the other. For fried rice that isn't too flavorful, I would choose the S&B. For a Lo Mein, the Momofuku. It's a cheap buy, so I'd say experiment!

    As a Chinese really not a fan of Fly By Jing, feels more like a chili paste for cooking chinese soup bases than it is a usuable chilli oil (imo). Since I started buying fresh chili oils directly from various restaurants I never went back to the mass produced, long shelf lasting brands like LGM
