We have wild elk interact with pastured cows and horses and they all act like a herd. I mean, they will divide up separately into groups, but grazing the mingle together. This elk thought she was protecting something, as evidenced by the other elk that weren't bothered and seem used to having the horse near. Bull elk lose their antlers in spring so I don't think it's a bull protecting the cows. It could have shed earlier, tho, so that's possible. Might have been concerned about the ball. Hard to say.
I hope this horse has other horses it can interact with. This horse clearly needs a friend.

Amazing interaction!
The colt is enjoying the company. Although some comments suggest that the elk wants to fight, I'm not so sure. Elk 'play fight' in this way with each other, with deer, and even with smaller animals. The elk could have easily jumped into the colt's pen if it had wanted to. Their legs are like springs. But . . . no horse should ever have to live alone. They are herd animals and need other equines for companionship and to feel secure. In some countries it's illegal to make a horse live without another horse for companionship. If this colt doesn't have equine companion that are out of view in this video, something should be done about that. Buy another, board one, or even borrow a buddy for it - being sure to not take another horse away from its own buddy in the process.
@Punkini
Жыл бұрын
They do play fight, but this doesn’t look like play fighting. I don’t usually see herd animals play fight with members of other herds, and especially not with herds of other species (and ones they’ve never seen before). This really just looks like a defensive behavior from the elk. It wouldn’t jump over the fence and put itself in danger if it didn’t need to, it’s just trying to warn the horse not to come any closer or else. Animals typically give warnings and don’t usually just randomly start a fight since fights have a pretty good chance at getting yourself killed.
