MASSIVE Herd of Canadian Elk Decide to Join the Horses

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Minus 22....or 22 below zero....out to feed my horses in Alberta Canada and this is what i find......wish i could feed them all lol but i can't. After this one of my horses was colicky and it became five hours of a frozen nightmare. Luckily he is doing better....he is the boss horse and i think he wouldnt' leave the hay to protect it and his herd and so he did not drink enough water...that and the stress. But all seems good and right now at 1:30am he is fine and the elk have not come back.....but they will.
Thought i'd share a little of the cold western Canadian winter adventures of living out towards the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with horses...and wildlife. Looks like paradise in the Spring and Summer but our winter is up to half a year.....and when it's forty or fifty below....you still have to go outside many times a day to check and feed and water horses. And when someone is sick or hurt....you can forget about ever being warm again lolol..... my legs and fingers were red and after two hours inside wouldn't warm up tonight ...so i had to stand in a hot shower for half an hour. But....i'd do anything for the horses....and beats the heck out of living in the city!

You can't see all the elk in this video ...there were some in the neighbors field and also in the back in the bush and the upper field as well. These ones were the brave ...and hungry...ones!

lolol....i think they understood because they went back into the forest. i can barely afford to feed the horses these days.....one 1100 pound bale lasts 4 days and it's $200 now....just for one! When i started with horses not all that long ago they were $60 each! Anyways, thank you for the visit and i'm happy you enjoyed the video! Best wishes to you!

You are such a good kind soul as well as a most wonderful, endearing friend. You care about your horses so much, that you almost neglect yourself. Your story is a little sad but beautiful at the same time. You tell it in the way only YOU can, because you are a very special human being. Hello my beautiful lovely friend! Yes....very very very cold. I'm sitting here procrastinating as i must go out in it and do my chores. This winter for some reason feels harder than the others mind you we had a long spell of forty to fifty below...and now we have returned to twenty below. It's a long, cold, snowy and difficult one this year. Each winter i am longing more and more to return to the land of my people....England..... If only i could build a big ark and move us all across the pond for the winters!! anyways thank you for your beautiful words and your love....i'm sending it right back to you! Hi Linda Jean lovely lady, and treasured friend, this is a fantastic video, it looks so cold, and bleak there. When my Wife, and I visited Vancouver it was in the summer. I'm so glad we don't get winters like that in the UK. The Elk didn't seem so keen when your horses started to move towards them, they chickened out Hee Hee. You have some very beautiful horses, they look so contented, and happy. I'm on 160 acres near Vernon BC (Crown land on 3 sides) so the deer and elk here also look like they'd really like to have some hay, but my 4 guardian dogs run them off. I think y'all had a drought out there too last summer? I think that's why everyone is extra hungry this winter. I used to put free choice Hoffman's minerals down in my pole barn, but they were obviously eating them as they disappeared so fast. So now I just have the minerals in a feeder near the house. Great footage though! Gorgeous animals - these must be young ones though, or do they just look small because of the camera.... Glad your herd guardian is better now!

Hi there ! Great to hear from you...love your area...my whole life's family vacations were in Winfield! Well..not really a drought here...the neighbors actually got the best garden yield they've had in years. We did have it very hot though but it seemed to help the growth. We have had a whole lot of snow though and that makes pawing for grass very difficult for grazers. We've had the elk trying for the horses hay for a few years. Once they spot it they want it! Previous years the horses ran from them but this year they seem to know them lol and they put up a good defense....some mornings i even find clumps of elk hair! The bulk of the herd was further back in the trees but i think it looked like a mix of ages with some younger ones in the forefront....the big males were hanging back. anyways....thank you for saying hi and sharing your story...and thank you for the comment about Moonshadow....it is such a relief to see him all bossy and sassy once again as you can well imagine! Interesting to see this massive herd of Canadian here of Elk joining the horse, apparently these animals have something in common!

Hi there! They sure do!! they all want the pile of hay to eat and keep warm from the cold! Funny thing....the first year the elk came the horses were terrified and ran to the far corner of the field. Now....they are used to them and they work really hard to defend their hay against the much larger number of elk! Fascinating! Thanks for visiting and commenting....very best wishes to you!

It looks really cold! Do the elks usually come that close or is it because of the hunger? I've enjoyed watching your video, Linda. And I'm glad I'm inside a heated building even though over here it's not as nearly as cold 🙂

Ha ha!!! Yes you are lucky you are warm! It is 12 below now but was minus 20 again last night! Yes....the elk come in to try and get an easy feed off the horses hay. They otherwise would be wandering and pawing through all that snow trying to get at the grass below. The horses were terrified of them the first few years they would come down and run to the far end of the field...now the horses defend their food as much as they can....amazing when the herd of elk is so much bigger! Glad you enjoyed the video David....i must go outside now and feed and check all the outside critters....i'm procrastinating because i don't want to go out in the cold! Best wishes to you my friend!

My Dad told me that horses should be in a barn during cold weather because they sweat like humans. I hope you have cover for them?

  • @lindajeancountrymusic

Not true....we live in an area with many wild horses....horses have amazing immune systems and built in heaters. If it's a horse that is a barn horse or spends a lot of time in arenas in winter then yes...they need blankets and barns. But horses that are outside and kept as natural as possible do just fine....in fact the cold helps to kill off some of the parasites. The snow on horses also works as insulation and eating hay creates heat in their bodies. They have shelters to go in if they need....and the older horses and donkeys have blankets. A very old and blind mini here who is coming up on 36 is in a small barn during the night and if the weather is very harsh. As you can clearly see from this video....my animals are in excellent condition and health. The veterinarians that come on occassion for this or that always comment on how well everyone is.....and their excellent condition. As an aside....many horses would hate being locked in a barn all winter....it is not natural for them and they need to move and keep their natural systems functioning as God intended.
