I work as a dog groomer and see that type skin issue a lot. They are freighting in a long coated dog especially if the dog it matted because you can't see them until you clipper bumps them. I always groom with a light hand and attention to the skin as I work.

I am a veterinary surgeon as well, and have also hardly ever used a handle.. I guess it's just a matter of habit. It feels uncomfortable when I clip on a handle.
