Poor baby...you could definitely tell he was feeling bad! Never seen lymph nodes that huge. Glad to see he is starting to feel well. Hope he makes a full recovery.

This is why we freeze fish and game animals for three weeks before feeding them. My girl is raw fed, and she only eats chunks and not whole fish :D

NOVENTA TV should be...that’s how sushi is edible. The usa fda requires all sushi/raw seafoods to be frozen at a certain super low temp for a certain amount of time.

That blew my mind lol so interesting how that occurs!! I paused and called my parents..I knew they would get a kick out of that ...I love your videos doc!!

I learned something new today, I think I will advise our local Park and Rec' department, my little city stocks the little lake in the summer with catfish and trout in the winter.

I freeze all fish and other raw foods I feed my dogs a minimum of 3 days to kill any parasites and don't feed the fish guts for the reasons you say in the video. Good video... I hope he fully recovered. :-)

Hey Doc, you do know that salmon are a species of trout? So truly, this activity should be called Trout poisoning! lol

What magnification was for the poop eggs. I'm checking my other dogs poop as one of them is being treated now. Our dog showing signs of salmon poisoning was poop checked and came back neg. So I was hoping to do my own test too.. My scope is 40x to 2500x. Treatment cost 3k to 5k. Already spent $1600 and more at er hospital. Good thing she is recovery now. Vet says if you get the dog in sooner then better chances to save the dog. We walk our dogs near a river and its now time salmon spawn. Most likely it was a fisherman that fillett fish and tossed the guts/head. Got to watch the dogs carefully near the water now. Especially during the salmon run / spawn time.

Dr. M - is smoked salmon safe for dogs? I only fed my late lab cooked meat and fish (as a treat). I am planning on adopting a dog in the near future so I would like to know. Btw - good to see that lovely dog on the mend, his whimpering was heartbreaking.

Reason why hes sick is because his digestive system is used to dog food(an unnatural diet).. i guarantee if he ate nothing but raw meat and raw fish he would never have these symptomes because his stomach acid and bacterium would quickly eliminate it.my dog only eats raw , ive given my dog many types of raw and rotten meats over the years and went to get his blood check a month ago and hes still very healthy pitty going on 12 years old now.

I wonder if feeding diatomaceous earth would help kill the parasites

My 4 month puppy just ate a raw baby bass yesterday. It wasn't cooked or frozen. But on Monday going to the vet on Monday to make sure cause I dont know if he has it or not but I ain't waiting for signs to show up I want to make sure he doesn't have it . Salmon poisoning is a very easy treatment if caught in time. Salmon poisoning dosen't show up fast. It will take 5-7 days for anything to show up. Salmon poisoning can come in any fish.

3 of our dogs Eat frozen un thawed Salmon it was a small 4oz Fillet Divided Between them well one got about 2oz and the others got 1oz etch . it was wild caught Salmon from Russia frozen. do you think they will be ok.?

I plan on switching my puppy to a raw food diet and I eat a lot of salmon (wild caught filets, of course.) I have fed my cat raw salmon before but I was once told not to feed cats cooked fish because there are tiny bones in the meat that, when cooked, stiffen and can puncture the intestinal lining. I am assuming this is the same for dogs. I feel safe feeding them raw salmon filets though. Is this right? Thanks!

@@GoldenState408 If it’s only salmon without added ingredients. This isn’t sufficient for an animals only food, though. I still prefer to feed my dog food that has fish as it’s first ingredient. If I feed a salmon filet, it’s from a frozen package.

He was feeling so terrible. You could just see it in his eyes. I know I will never eat fish again. I've had food poisoning from it twice.

This is good to know. I've always wanted to let my dog eat fish he can catch while we camp. I will not allow that after seeing this.

ReclusiveMountainMan Yes, technically the fluke does “infect” the dog but is not harmful to it. It lives in the dog for awhile producing the next stage in the lifecycle that pass out through the feces. The dog is only in danger if the flukes that it eats have previously been infected with the deadly bacteria that can live inside them. The bacteria use the fluke as a Trojan horse (vector) to get past the dogs defenses and then attack the dog from the inside.

Wonderful information! Scientifically fascinating! I'm so glad I don't eat fish organs! It's interesting they call it salmon no-matter the fish. How elitist.

teapartie That's good to hear! Your pet is one of the blessed that didn't suffer! But, better to err on the side of caution, don't you agree? Do not feed your dog raw trout or salmon, or fish guts, particularly the kidneys. Easy-Peasy!

40ozOG As long as you are not feeding the pup undercooked fish guts and kidneys, things should be OK. The flukes that contain the dangerous bacteria almost never get in to the meat. The symptoms usually occur 7-10 days after exposure so if you are past that point with no signs, your pup is probably in the clear.

I just got back from the vet. I'm so scared for my dog they sent me home with him . Gave him fluids and a pill I have to give him every 12 hours. He won't eat vomits everything up. Tonight's the first night with treatment hope he gets better in the morning. I hate seeing him like this.

To all those worried about sushi or raw feeding cats Salmon poisoning only affects dogs and some bears that were bred in captivity. It is one of those illnesses that is super species specific.

I live in Oregon, I do not think dogs are indigenous animals, to Oregon territory. #Salmon

Eating raw is great, but there are still foods to avoid and salmon is one of those since that's a fish that swims up the current. Big no no when it come to feeding a dog or cat that kind of fish.

Please cooked food for your dog. Don't fed too much raw n dried foods. I fed my dog with chicken n rice so it will not be too dry for them.
