Welcome to Twin Elm Farms! On this channel we show what its like to farm in southern Manitoba, Canada. The farm consists of Kendal, wife Lindsay their kids Hayley, Parker, Jaxon and Brock. Kendal's older brother Darryl, wife Heather, their kids Mackenzie, Dylan, Quin and Ryenne. With our right hand man Pieter. We have other part time help throughout the season, Arch (combine operator) Terry (field work) and Rob (cattle help). We crop corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and canola. We have a cow/calf operation of mostly Simmental and Shorthorn with some other breeds in the mix. Hope you enjoy our content, please subscribe, give it a thumbs up and love hearing comments.

Solution to calf grafting: Our Grandfather used to hand milk the Mother and then take a paint brush and paint the calf with the mothers milk down the center of the back. He reapplied it after a rain or heavy dew and humidity. the Mother cow seemed to accept the calf in a very short time compared to other methods we saw used elsewhere! The Mother smells her milk on the calf and knows that cam from her?

I think that’s a great cow, non of my cows would have taken some other calf after having had her own for a month.

Do you have cows & calves get hoof problems. walking in all that mud & heavy water pools? So glad Marco. got a female. momma. Was beginning to think Marco would forever think Kendle was his mom. I saw another rancher skin the dead calf & put his hide onto an orphan calf. Momma accepted the calf right away. Learn something new. everyday, & know you seem to know everyone of your cows & which calf belongs to which cow. 😅 ❤

I watch all of your videos, and really enjoy most of them, but I find it hard to watch the sections where the cattle have to wade through the extensive mud. I raised beef cattle for many years in Wisconsin, and made sure that my cattle never had to deal with such conditions. I understand that it is difficult to control the weather and seasonal changes, but there must be a better way to not have to put the animals through this, not to mention yourselves as well. Good luck with your AI and embryo projects, and with getting Marco attached to the foster cow.

Wisconsin has lots of rocks and hills. Manitoba has lots of earth and pretty flat. Lots of rain and cattle tramping makes for mud.

Yep, I absolutely hate the mud. We are looking into setting up a different yard with a bunch of pens. When our cattle numbers were lower, we were able to manage in the heavy dirt, but it has only been getting worse. In my next video, I explain a bit about why we have done what we have and what we are hoping to change for next year. Mostly.... this is our 7th year with animals and huge learning curve. We realize we are doing this and need to think longer term.

Don't think I've ever seen a gate or an alleyway that isn't muddy in the spring 🤔

I clean out my barn once a week, if ground frozen no problem, but late fall, spring forget it. I have now a cement drive from the barn door all the way to where I dump the load. Clay ground, Friend finally paved his whole yard, that was years ago.
