Hooked a Big Palomino / Golden Rainbow Trout!

This is the 3rd Big Palomino I broke off this year :(((
This one was a combination of abrasion on my line (caught a dozen fish on the same leader before I hooked this guy) and my drag being a click or two too tight.
Hurts, a lot, but I'm still determined to get another big one!

He broke you off because I never heard your drag working at all, big planted fish like that very rarely go for fast water.
drag sounded too tight. especially if using 4lb line or less

Right below that bridge there's a bunch of fast water and I would have lost him for sure if he went over that so that's why I was trying to put the brakes on him. I use 6# line on 2 of my reels now when I'm targeting big trout and I almost never break off fish

Big holdover and wild ones can break 6lb like it’s nothing, I always tire the fish out before getting the net, you’ll spook it for another big run.
the one that got away. are the palomino trout a cross of a rainbow and a california golden trout? some of the ones i've seen on youtube look kind of freakish.

Yup :( lost so many of these this past season lol The ones we have in PA are actually golden rainbow trout but everyone calls them palominos because that's what the original strain was. I think the ones we have now are crossed with rainbow trout or something like that. Really cool fish since they're bright yellow with a dark red stripe

@@steveperry1344 They're really cool to catch and they usually stock big ones but the issue is that everyone can see them so it's rare to get a hole with a pali all to yourself. And even then every possible bait/lure has probably already been thrown to that fish haha

@@vladoutdoors1191 I have always had good luck with panther Martins with light tackle. I used to do fly fishing with my dad and brother, they were real masters, the tyeing, the study, the stalking of the fish. It was a way of life for them, really into it.
Tough situation. You can’t just loosen the drag because of all the rocks, and you can’t just horse-it in either. Easy to say in hindsight that loosening the drag would have been a good call, but if loosening the drag would have allowed the fish to break you off on the rocks then everyone would have said you should have kept the drag tight. All in all thanks for the upload, and leaving out the bad words(for my kid).

I've moved to 6# line on my float rods since this moment. And I don't break fish off any more. When you're using split shots I find it weakens your line and when you get a big fish on 4# it's more like 2# because of the shots. I still use 4# on my jigging rod though. You should have loosened your drag
Loosen up your drag just a bit trust me, I fish for the same exact typa trout with 4lb line
My son caught one at Black Moshannon when he was 12. It was sooo exciting.

No way! I caught my biggest ever golden rainbow there with my Dad a few years back. Love that area! Don't live there anymore though...

You are correct. The PA strain is called golden rainbow trout. The WV strain is called a palomino and most people in PA still call them that for some reason. Golden trout are those beautiful wild boys out in the Sierras!
