Hong Kong Coronation festivities in 1953
This is a re-mastered clip of the film of the HK Amateur Cine Club (I have yet to find any surviving member of this club). The festivities were in honour of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Alexander Graham was governor of the colony at the time.

Fabulous capture. Thx! This is a proof that the British saved the Chinese culture and languages in respect.
Very precious. Queen of British Hong Kong forever.
Thank you Michael for all your work on Hong Kong; I hope the younger Hong Kongers will pick this up as well...rather interesting, especially viewing it now from England..
Thank you for sharing, it is part of HK history! A lovely recall, I was there as a kid watching the parade. The first of its kind in HK.
I have just shared it with my mother, she was among the spectators. She remembered and enjoyed it very much. Thank you!
Awesome video of a Hong Kong that was so different from today. Thank you for your generous sharing of your works with us. You are a legend.
As a British Hongkonger, I was born in British Hong Kong and now come frm UK. Many thanks for your historical proof.
That feels so royal! it's important for world. Hong Kong also can be himself. Obversly UK is culture peotector.
Well, such a nice n kind sharing, really brilliant, thanks Michael!
I first read about the ' Coronation Ceremony' in the Hong Kong Annual Report 1953. There were a few B&W photos also. I could only imagine about the grand ceremony after reading the description & seeing those few pictures. Now after watching this footage,I feel that the reality was grander than my imagination...thanks to Michael Rogge...
Thank you, Mr. Rogge, for this priceless historical footage, and I remember her visit. It was spectacular indeed.
Thank you. This is brilliant.A bit too young to remember. But my late parents would've.
I Love British Hong Kong
That was amazing, thanks for sharing!
Wow! Breathtaking footage! 👍👍👍
Michael - I was at the official 'launching' [circa 1956-57] of a state of the art fireboat for HK, named after the then former governor, Sir Alexander Graham {or was it Grantham]. My father was stationed in Catterick Camp, North Yorkshire at the time of the Coronation - I remember there was a very big parade, with several Victoria Cross holders, and between 50-100 tanks. We kids had great slap up parties. p.s. I have just done a check, and yes, both the governor at the time of the Coronation, and the fireboat, were named Sir Alexander Grantham.
THNAKYOU MICHAEL YOU ARE THE BEST!
Fantastic in seeing an illuminated tram joined the celebration!
thank you michael

Did hkers love the queen in 50s? That's interesting because we hated and fought Dutch colonial so much in Indonesia.

Hong Kongers honestly didn't hate the queen at all. At least for my whole life living in Hong Kong, I've never seen anyone showing any kind of hate towards the British. Maybe the people in Hong Kong wasn't well treated by the British in the early colonial days but after the WW2 they've brought us many benefits. For example, the law system. Even now, after the handover, many of the people still reminisce the good old days.

Britain was very hands off when it came to governing Hong Kong, and how can you hate someone as classy as the queen? You may be an anti-monarchist but she’s harmless really
Its a dilemma for HKers in colonial day: 1. England 2. Mainland China
當日,香港人以香港人方式慶祝英女王登基,今日連講句「香港加油」都要擔驚受怕,到底邊個先係殖民統治者?
Liberate Hong Kong! Revolution of our times! Hong Kong independence is the only way!
So "gay" and vibrant, can't imagine just 10 years ago Hong Kong was broken and suffering under Japanese rule. A lot of footage of the parade can be found in a 1953 film called 火樹銀花相映紅.

look at the parade, only the civilized western would have the tradition of such organized ceremony. won't be in the east.
