Introducing Hong Kong in 1951/4 我在香港的生活
This is the film I shot with my new 16mm camera in glorious Kodachrome. It was probably the first 16mm colour film made of Hong Kong after the war.See the almost empty harbour. Population 2,5 million people then!

I was born in Hk 1948 and our family moved to San Francisco 1966. I love HK so much childhood memories it was fun and peaceful time.
Thank you for uploading such historic and interesting footage of old HK. I wasn't born then, but my parents who were teenagers then have already moved to HK from Shanghai. I will definitely show them your collection of HK videos, they will love it! Wish you could come back to HK to see how it has changed with 7M people now!!!
Thank you for uploading these videos, it is so valuable.
Thanks Michael! What a precious filming! I just came across with your video, believe you must enjoy living in HK in the old days!
Thank you for sharing, it's a very precious film!
WOW!! You saved the best for us in HK.....THX
When I traveled to Hong Kong in 1949 there were hardly planes available. I went by ship. That took one and half a month ! I have clips on YT of my voyage and first arrival. Search with michael rogge hong kong.
I found that the "Hong Kong poster " was so artistic back then
An extraordinary document, as are all your Hong Kong films
4:11 Those children reading comics on the street are 76 to 79 years old now !!!
thx Michael, Hong Kong now have 7 million people, crazy.
Great Memories❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I suppose the last part, from 8:42 onward, was the major annual event at that time: The Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo 工展會 Thanks a lot Michael for having so clear a view of an event almost 70 years
I still remember those days when boys were living, eating, sleeping and playing on the same streets before..that was when we all were poor but happy.
This is such a beautiful footage of what Hong Kong was like under the British rules. I used to live across from the jockey club in Hong Kong. Thank you so much for sharing this hidden treasure with us. You saved the best of Hong Kong for us to enjoy.
I see the boy taking the ice to the Shekou HHH . On on lad!
Yes, The reception looked like a shed at the time.
@FrankBolte I'm afraid that in 1949 few cameras and dollars were around outside the studios.
In the beginning of this beautiful film there is a sequence filmed from an airplane landing at Kaitak.....??
Was there electronic display board in 1951?
Nice
I envy as you visited colonial Hong Kong! Michael HKer born in 1996
@FrankBolte It is funny but Kung Fu never crossed my way in Hong Kong at the time.In the seventies I came into contact and practised Tai Chi in Holland, but noone in Hong Kong knew about it at the time. I saw one of our people in the bank sometimes perform a sword ritual in our lobby on Sundays. There were possibly masters around in Hong Kong 55 years ago but they never showed themselves, possibly because they thought that foreigners were not interested and I can't blame them!
We used to have strong industry....that's the greatest lost of HK
If it is not commercial it is fine to me.
From where were you flying into Hongkong?? can you immagine that even 60years ago you had those colourful brochures..they have started disipearing as airlines dont print them anymore...the romance in marketing a place seems to be gone??
HK has changed...sadness

If you are comparing to 1951, I would say it's changed definitely for the better. happiness.
Most airports at the time mayby except Schiphol were sheds..flying were not a means of masscommunication but a very expensive way of travelling...
YOU'RE HONG KONG'S TREASURE BOX !
if only I could visit the colonial Hong Kong!
not the slightest smile everyone's mouthing
