Hong Kong Fully Mainlandized, Becomes a Financial Ruin; Over 100 Shops Close Monthly

This is Hong Kong during the Easter holiday: the doors in front of shops are desolate, few visitors in sight, and business is dismal. The streets and subway stations are also empty, even the bustling Mong Kok area has far fewer people than usual.

As a HKer, I must say it is not as simple as all HKers started embracing China in a sudden and travel to there every weekend and holiday. There was a trend already before 2019’s umbrella movement when things were or looked fine, lots of people already travelled to China then, but that wasn’t a problem. There are multiple reasons for HK looking so empty now: 1. The massive wave of migration after 2019 to western countries, mainly to Australia, Canada and the UK, a lot of these people would have stayed at HK when there were also people travelling to China during holidays before 2019. 2. COVID lockdown rules had HK people stuck in HK for almost 3 years, plus the fact that HK dollar have a higher buying power now, more people would go abroad to Japan/ Korea / Taiwan when they get a longer holiday. 3. There are more and more migrants from China living in HK, they will return to see their families when they can, especially for the Lunar new year holiday. Also they will gain HK citizenship after living in HK for 7 years, so they will technically become HKers. 4. COVID also locked the Chinese in China, before covid lots of them would come to HK to shop all sort of things as they believe those sold in HK are more reliable, and luxury goods are cheaper in HK compare to China. But after 3 years of closed borders, they developed a new network or a new habit of shopping, they can get all they need within China now. So there aren’t as much Chinese tourists as before in HK. Lots of shops are closing because the tens of thousands of people moved to the west, people got bored being stuck in HK during covid, strict covid rules that changed people’s habit that less people will eat out now, less tourists coming to HK and HKers saving when they are in HK and mostly spend when they are travelling. However, the trend of buying groceries in China is new, there are no Sam’s club or Costco in HK, so it could be the excitement of things that HK doesn’t have, we will have to see.

Even though he ultimately was right, if you visited in 2019 or before it still was a wonderful city only with some political limitations. People were able to still speak their minds and complain about politics and mostly do whatever they liked. As a Canadian born HKer, I wanted to see my parent's birth country and I was not disappointed but it certainly was an experience in how crowded a place can be. I insisted on going almost yearly to my mom's annoyance, since 2009, I only stopped in 2019 because we weren't sure of how safe it was during the protests...particularly the police. Now my mom is glad we went as many times as we did. Seeing HK now 2020 on, it's f'd. An uncrowded HK is a dead HK. One of the most liveliest cities at night, it's now less lively at night than mine. Until CCP rule ends, I'm also never going back to HK again. My risk of going to jail in HK or China(ironically less so on the mainland)is higher than every other country even though I'm a law abiding citizen under everyone else's definition. There are plenty of countries I'm critical of their governments and policies, Japan for instance, but they don't want to jail me for that...therefore I'm going to Japan this year.

It's completely different for mainland Chinese where housing is abundant and they're just cheap. I doubt that a lot of those who travel across border to shop and eat are mostly mainlanders who live in Hong Kong but spend in Shengzhen. Local HongKongers would rather stay in Hong Kong or travel to Taiwan or Japan in their holidays. The truth is a lot of middle class Hong Kongers have emigrated to UK, Canada and Australia in the last few years.

the math is simple, 2 mil Hong Kong'ers are spending their $$ in Shenzhen, therefore, where can HK tap from abroad to replace this spending??? Medical tourism, especially dental/vision related comes to mind. Then there is cancer. Worldwide, there is easily a pool of overseas Chinese (3-4 million aged 60/over) willing to live in HK if only costs of living comes back down to reasonable level, and medical coverage would be deciding factor for many.....Japan is getting there but no one speaks English there hardly, and their culture is so rigid for many....

Well, I think it's important to remember that Britain, a colonial power not kind to those they subjugated, took Hong Kong from China after winning the first opium war circa 1842. Following the second opium war they took more land. Read Britain's reasons for importing ooium to China. They wanted to make miney to address a trade imbalance. It was inhuman. So it's hard not to recognize China's moral right to redress this 150 year outrage. Hong Kong was handed back in 1997. But problems surfaced again. I am not supporting the CCP by any means. I am a loyal and patriotic American. We, too, were colonies of Britain and rebelled. Just remember that Hong Kong was founded by Britain in the most dishonorable way possible. By government opium dealers.

It's only going to get worse as Americans are starting to spend less of their money. It's looking like the same is following here in the US as it's getting harder to live pay check to pay check. The greed here is now effecting the global market. But bad business ethics for China companies have also cause this. On top of rising cost to ship products to US. If countries don't start working together on this problem now it's going to cost everyone in the end.
