The problem was he didn't reach his prime, that is why people don't regard in the same way as some other players. He had about 3 years where he was amazing, then got a run of hamstring injuries at Liverpool, and was never the same again, that electric pace had gone, and the problem with a player like Owen is that pace was half his game, and with that gone he was nothing special.

Also shearer suffered an ACL injury at 19. His scoring record was acheived on an un-optimal knee joint. Having had 2 ACL reconstructions myself, it's no joke.

I still remember his goal against Argentina in 1998.

He was pure class, on his day no-one could touch him, pains me to say but loved watching him play even when he played for the Mags (i'm a Boro fan), fantastic interview what a man, well done Michael top guy.

I think one of the key examples of an English player who's injuries wasted him would have to be Daniel Sturridge. He used to be arguably one of the fastest, skillful and most clinical strikers in the premier league and injuries just destroyed him. Such a shame

Same, when I started, I fancied Owen so much and I was nicknamed Owen and I was ecstatic about it. Because I was really fast and score plenty of goals, even in my late teen years where I became a left back and still manage to grab goals. Now not a player anymore, but still remember the times where Owen was my nickname for a good 3 years. And on top of that, I won the 100m gold medal the year I started playing so it solidifies my legacy as Owen

I remember in his early Liverpool days when Owen was nipping around players as if they wasn't there. I don't think people realize the phenomenal pace he was blessed with. His natural goal scoring instinct and this incredible pace was an absolute nightmare for any defender. Had he not suffered from these injuries I firmly believe he would have scored well over 70 goals for England and be considered the best striker in the world for a number of years. Such a shame his ability was severely hindered at such a young age.

Nice to hear Michael's side of things. Very honest and insightful. Hell of a player in his time. ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Michael Owen's is a story of terrible misfortune. I remember seeing him injure his hamstring at Leeds, and he was never the same player since. He still could finish, and had a Linekeresque knack of being in the right place at the right time, hence so many headers from such a short striker. But the one thing he relied on throughout his youth had deserted him and he was still expected to produce the goods. I also feel bad that he left Liverpool for Real Madrid so that he could win the Champions League, and that season Liverpool won the Champions League and he was a bench player for Real. He wasn't even given a fair shot at Real, because Ronaldo and Raul were there, and any manager who benched an uninjured Raul was shortly thereafter sacked, such was the cult around that guy. I sincerely hope people don't forget just how incredible Michael Owen was, for England especially. Before Rooney came onto the scene, it was literally a Beckham-to-Owen partnership that took us to tournaments. Those two worked so well together. I feel Rooney will be remembered for his longevity, enthusiasm, heart, records and skill, and that Owen will only become a footnote, but that, to my mind, is grossly unfair. Owen, in his day, was unstoppable.

I'm fairly certain Michael Owen actually had the highest minutes/goals ratio of anyone in the Spanish league in that season too.

And this is one of the realities of being a professional athlete and goes to show how fragile the life can be. Owen’s a sensible guy, and although clearly frustrated with the last few years of his career, was wise enough to modify his game and still do very well from it.

he is the reason i watch football and love football... as manchester united fans..i loved seeing him play at liverpool .. then suddenly he gone to real madrid which all started to go wrong... from 158 goals score at liverpool to a bench warmer and with all the injuries...when he come to united.. it was like a dream come true for me as a united fan... and im so happy seeing him finally winning the PL title ...and he winning it with my manchester united...

One of England's very best strikers ever. Before that cruciate ligament injury against Sweden, he was pretty much unstoppable at times.

M'bappe is one of these nippy young guys who can beat players and put it away like Owen did. Hope he doesn't suffer the same fate and is done by 25

Arsenal fan here-my most vivid memory of Owen is the 2001 FA Cup Final. His equaliser was an instinctive finish in the box and the winning goal was a blistering run and clinical strike. Those two goals summed him up perfectly. At his best, he was a magical player.

I prefer Fowler, because he was the ‘local lad done good’, had a great football mind and was most natural finisher I have ever seen, but Owen was an absolute electric freak and did it in the International stage. Always scored in big tournaments and when it counted. Fantastic player and that goal in St Etienne was one of the greatest I’ve seen an England player score but let’s put this in to some perspective can we? He achieved things that some players could only dream of. Won countless titles and honours, made a ton of money, etc. He should look back and feel proud of what he’s done not sad that he didn’t have a longer career.

Great to hear Michael talk so open and honest about his career and how he felt at the end, I didn't realise he felt like this for so long though... Its a shame how he's almost turned into a bit of joke or a recurring meme. At his peak which did come as a teenager or early 20s he was frighteningly good. His record for Liverpool especially and for England is brilliant.... he was a top finisher, strong for his size, great link up play, with unbelievable speed and a great footballing mind.... Balon D'or winner for god sake, 40 goals for England... if he didn't get injured he would have the England goal scoring record sewn up for decades... feel sorry for him in many ways. Top player, top bloke... maybe not the best pundit lol, but definitely deserves a lot more respect than he gets

I completely understand where Owen is coming from. It happened to me, ok not at pro level, i was semi but i was rapid and then i tore my hamstring pretty bad. I wasnt near the same player i was and the thought of going through that pain again mentally affected my game there on afterwards. I used to love running down the channels but i just couldnt get that injury out of my head. Great honesty from Owen!

Because of Michael Owen I became a Liverpool fan in 2000/01. I'm pretty sure there are many others like me.

Yeah mate, I loved him at Liverpool. Him and Torres were my favourite players growing up, but unfortunately Owen committed the ultimate betray and joined the enemy

I am almost tearing up listening to Owen talk about his recurrent injuries; he could legit have been top ten in the history of football.

That last 20 seconds broke me. I had my hamstring in my left leg ruptured, 5 years ago in August. Playing "social" indoor football. Couldn't walk for a month, without painkillers for 3 months and couldn't run for 6 months. I missed half a season plus summer, and the whole next season before I even tried training again. It hurts, because I know I've lost yards of pace and turning control, because I refused at 26 to have a knee/thigh reconstruction surgery. I took the long rehab route. I still play club football, but shifted to wing back instead of wing. I just can't run around guys anymore and get into those pockets. I can't imagine how he would have felt. His livelihood, slowly ran away from him. Especially after that ACL injury at 06 World Cup. I was amazed he kept going in top flight leagues afterwards.

what an unbelievable striker he was.. absolutely frightening he terrified the best defenders in the world and this is a class honest Interview.. 👏

With Leroy Sane picking up an ACL injury in the community shield I'm worried he will suffer similar problems on his return. He's only 23 and to lose his speed and his agility now would be really sad for a guy otherwise looking to have an incredible career.
