Met David Bentley at my local Tesco when he was still a Tottenham player, lovely guy! He saw I noticed him and gave me a nod, realised I wasn't sure if I should disturb him as he got in his car so he called me over and chatted to me about school (he went to the same school as me when he was a kid) and other stuff, was genuinely just a lovely guy, pleasure to meet!

+Ay Raikage No it's not, I live in an area where a lot of players live/used to live. Van Persie when he was at Arsenal, Defoe, Ledley King, Peter Crouch, Marlon King, Victoria Beckham's parents house (not quite the same but still) I've still got David's signature at home, I didn't know he went to the same secondary school as me, he mentioned it because I was in my school uniform. Fair enough it probably sounds like bullshit but it ain't. Literally opposite that Tesco's there's a kebab shop and the whole wall is full of pictures of the owner with footballers because they all go in there!

To all of those dissing him, at least he was honest. He fell out of love with the game - it's not about professionalism. It's easier commenting about other's lives without being in that position dealing with it. I'm sure it must have been really tough, as is other jobs. And so what if he didn't achieve what he could have been. He tried, got paid for the work he put in, and didn't like it.

Enjoyed this and I know exactly where he's coming from just as a football supporter; the game has reached a point where it is a lot more streamlined because of the money come into the game and that stakes - i.e. with it being a results business. Managers are in cut-throat jobs and that means players essentially are machines. Gone were the days where you can have pie n chips, turn up, and just go out there and play. Now it's "how many kilometres you ran", "assist", "completed passes", it's almost like Championship Manager and the Premier League is perceived essentially as a product.

While most of the team signed a few and went off, David stayed and went round to everyone giving photo as well!

I can understand why he he fell out of love with football, great teams are built on team spirit so if players are acting all serious and not having a laugh with eachother they aren't a team with team spirit and togetherness. Be serious on the pitch yeah but off the field you gotta have a mix of dedication and fun to keep the team together.

Think he is the type of guy who loves to come into training and have a laugh, have banter with the lads but at the same time focus as well, like he did at Blackburn, that's why he played his best football, coz he enjoyed the laughs that came with being a pro footballer, then when he signed for spurs it was a more serious approach (which I think is only right), the banter and jokes wasn't there so he became unhappy and didn't play anywhere near as good for the rest of his career. He made 100% the right decision to call it a day as to him football away from the pitch became boring to him, and as he is a fun loving lad I'm not surprised he became bored and unhappy, which is a shame coz he is a top player! Glad he is enjoying his new life, seems a decent and honest lad!

Bentley wasn't a bad player for Spurs, he actually played an important role for them during the 09/10 season when Aaron Lennon was injured and when Spurs finished in the top 4 for the first time. Unfortunately I think Spurs lack the kind of culture which allows players to enjoy themselves and suffice to say, David Bentley was a player who probably was at his best as a footballer when he was happy and enjoying himself.

Bentley had it all. Looks, talent and potential, but fell victim to the football culture. After leaving Blackburn, he lost his way and got comfortable financially. No longer willing to fight for his place on the football field. He was content with the fancy holidays in the sun, nights out and partying, and becoming a man of leisure. This has happened to so many modern players in recent years.

Was a great player at school, moaned a bit at being kicked but it's because he was that good. Real shame he was ill advised and ill supported, a great talent that dived out far too soon. Wish him all the best.

Seems like he went pro, lost motivation, only wanted to have fun and not work hard despite it ACTUALLY being a JOB, couldn't cope with the pressure and was only in it for the money and lifestyle in the end.
