Met David Bentley at my local Tesco when he was still a Tottenham player, lovely guy! He saw I noticed him and gave me a nod, realised I wasn't sure if I should disturb him as he got in his car so he called me over and chatted to me about school (he went to the same school as me when he was a kid) and other stuff, was genuinely just a lovely guy, pleasure to meet!

+Ay Raikage No it's not, I live in an area where a lot of players live/used to live. Van Persie when he was at Arsenal, Defoe, Ledley King, Peter Crouch, Marlon King, Victoria Beckham's parents house (not quite the same but still) I've still got David's signature at home, I didn't know he went to the same secondary school as me, he mentioned it because I was in my school uniform. Fair enough it probably sounds like bullshit but it ain't. Literally opposite that Tesco's there's a kebab shop and the whole wall is full of pictures of the owner with footballers because they all go in there!

Sad, I feel sorry for him a bit. Then again he was a professional footballer and I'm a fat alcholic, so swings and roundabouts init.

LMFAOO. I didn’t even notice that till I saw this comment. Look at Joey Barton’s face like wtf
Such a pleasant guy. Met him at an open training session when he was at Spurs. He was the only player to go around to everyone waiting outside and sign autographs and take photos while most other players signed a few and walked off.
To all of those dissing him, at least he was honest. He fell out of love with the game - it's not about professionalism. It's easier commenting about other's lives without being in that position dealing with it. I'm sure it must have been really tough, as is other jobs. And so what if he didn't achieve what he could have been. He tried, got paid for the work he put in, and didn't like it.

Theres billions of people in the world. At any time there’s probably less than 10,000 people who are millionaire athletes. So funny how many people think they will automatically love the lifestyle and work etc
I've never seen Bentley interviewed before. Seems a genuinely nice and funny guy. Good luck for the future David.
Enjoyed this and I know exactly where he's coming from just as a football supporter; the game has reached a point where it is a lot more streamlined because of the money come into the game and that stakes - i.e. with it being a results business. Managers are in cut-throat jobs and that means players essentially are machines. Gone were the days where you can have pie n chips, turn up, and just go out there and play. Now it's "how many kilometres you ran", "assist", "completed passes", it's almost like Championship Manager and the Premier League is perceived essentially as a product.

Many people may say negative things about him but he's one of the nicest footballers I met. There was an open training session to the fans at The Lane one time, many fans stayed behind outside the ground hoping to get autographs. While most of the team signed a few and went off, David stayed and went round to everyone giving photo as well!
I can understand why he he fell out of love with football, great teams are built on team spirit so if players are acting all serious and not having a laugh with eachother they aren't a team with team spirit and togetherness. Be serious on the pitch yeah but off the field you gotta have a mix of dedication and fun to keep the team together.

Enjoyable conversation
Think he is the type of guy who loves to come into training and have a laugh, have banter with the lads but at the same time focus as well, like he did at Blackburn, that's why he played his best football, coz he enjoyed the laughs that came with being a pro footballer, then when he signed for spurs it was a more serious approach (which I think is only right), the banter and jokes wasn't there so he became unhappy and didn't play anywhere near as good for the rest of his career. He made 100% the right decision to call it a day as to him football away from the pitch became boring to him, and as he is a fun loving lad I'm not surprised he became bored and unhappy, which is a shame coz he is a top player! Glad he is enjoying his new life, seems a decent and honest lad!
I remember him scoring his first goal at the lane against Roma, everyone thought he was the new David Beckham and he had the potential to be like him, Bentley is always loved by the SPURS

Fair play I found this fascinating
Whats not discussed here are injuries.Personally,I believe that injuries psychologically destroyed him.Dont think he could ever find his form after a series of injuries he had
Bentley wasn't a bad player for Spurs, he actually played an important role for them during the 09/10 season when Aaron Lennon was injured and when Spurs finished in the top 4 for the first time. Unfortunately I think Spurs lack the kind of culture which allows players to enjoy themselves and suffice to say, David Bentley was a player who probably was at his best as a footballer when he was happy and enjoying himself.
0.19 is that Savage laughing or is David Brent behind the camera. I love Savage such a comedy source
Love hearing stories from football before it was so commercialised
Bentley was a creative player and creative people tend to get bored sadly, that;'s ok, good for him for being different and realizing when to bow out
Gotta love David Bentley
He did say once say footballers were being used as commodities and he felt he was just being used. That’s why he retired 🤷🏼♂️
He has a great voice could work in radio
he's was more into the glitz and glamour then playing football
shame he finished so early seems a nice chap remember arsenal v spurs 4-4 he was quality that game and for Blackburn rovers so moves just kill players careers 😕
Bentley loved the mad bantz
We’ve skirted round the fact that he didn’t play very well at Tottenham at all. If life has to be fun to do well loads of people would leave their jobs. It’s a symptom of ludicrous over payment in football that an average footballer can jack it in when he feels like it. So why all the sympathy
was a class player scored goals at the highest level just didn't want it enough

Bentley had it all. Looks, talent and potential, but fell victim to the football culture. After leaving Blackburn, he lost his way and got comfortable financially. No longer willing to fight for his place on the football field. He was content with the fancy holidays in the sun, nights out and partying, and becoming a man of leisure. This has happened to so many modern players in recent years.
@R619ification2011

From a footballing perspective, he didn't reach his potential, but from a personal point of view - financially comfortable, fancy holidays etc. sounds like he did alright
A honest footballer.
The mighty Cardiff was too much for him ahaha, but he genuinely seems a nice guy who deserves a lot of respect for his decision
couldve played a few more years at WBA and mid table teams he didnt have it to get to the top thats why he packed it in
Bentley is a top bloke 💯
omg he sounds so much like devlin
His career went downhill after he left Spurs and he could only play for clubs like FC Rostov in the Russian League, he clearly knew his time at the top was over.
I think it would bw easy 2take negatives frm D Bentley interview..Too much 2young,at a Big club, not mentally tough enough, not willing 2dedicate hmself. And those points would have certain merits..But i think he was willing 2have the courage 2say"I'v had enough of this,it does'nt motivate me or excite me".In truth there's been plenty of players wth this state of mind, but their willing 2b a squad player or sub, warm the bench and punch their ticket(and get paid bundles)he's got twins and other interests,so he had the bottle 2fuck off..Good luck 2him..
I'm a Rovers fan and that team then Bentley tugay savage pedersen Emerton friedel samba nelsen Mccarthy Santa cruz Roberts the Hughes years fantastic times and we always seemed to do well against utd as a bonus
Was a great player at school, moaned a bit at being kicked but it's because he was that good. Real shame he was ill advised and ill supported, a great talent that dived out far too soon. Wish him all the best.
im sure he would have found it "fun" if he could actually get in the first team anywhere
