Despite generally being a sub, Owen actually had the best minutes:goals ratio of anyone in La Liga 2004-05, even better than Eto'o and Forlan. Shame he never won the full trust and respect of the fans and manager. That said, by 2004-05 his pace, fitness and left foot were all starting to fail him badly (the decline had probably started a year or two before then). This was the last season where he looked like a close to world class striker. But Owen 1997-2002 was immense, right up there with the very best. Frightening pace and astonishing composure in front of goal for such a young player.

@@artfuldodger5247 it's always difficult comparing strikers, but when he 18 years old in his first full season he was first choice; furthermore, in an era of top top British strikers he was amongst the top. At 18 he would have been easily a 100 million pound player in today's valuation

I disagree. I say best striker. If England didn't screw up against Argentina - or suffer that crazy goal from Ronaldinho - history could have been different. Difference between Ronaldo R9 and Zidane is that when they scored their teams won, but when Owen scored or earned penalties - England lost. Not his fault.

Owen was the quickest and smartest English striker that I have ever seen play. He was deadly when left alone against a lone defender, specially on the run. He was a precision striker with great touch and sense of spacing. There have been faster, stronger, and much tougher strikers in English football, but none of them smarter or quicker. He is an absolute legend whose career could have had more success if it was not for so many injuries. Great memories.

I remember monitoring Owen's performances in Madrid. It seemed like EVERY time he played, which was as a sub, he would register at least a goal. That's crazy stats. He was too good for how he was treated at Madrid. He wasn't needed, yet they bought him anyway. He wasn't going to start over Ronaldo (though he should have, and I say this as an R9 fan), Raul was their golden boy, Morientes and I think Robinho were already there too. You don't say no to Real Madrid, which I suspect is why he agreed to go there.

As a Liverpool fan I should hate him for going to united but I actually just feel bad for him his whole career was ruined by that injury he sustained in 2006. He actually did alright for united as a super sub and although I wasn't happy about him going there at least he was at a club more fitting to his talents than say Newcastle or Stoke. I always wanted him back at Liverpool had brought him back in 08/09 we'd have had a solid option from the bench upfront. Him and Gerrard had a great understanding.

Owen brilliant here, that injury at Newcastle did for him
Пікірлер: 791
Despite generally being a sub, Owen actually had the best minutes:goals ratio of anyone in La Liga 2004-05, even better than Eto'o and Forlan. Shame he never won the full trust and respect of the fans and manager. That said, by 2004-05 his pace, fitness and left foot were all starting to fail him badly (the decline had probably started a year or two before then). This was the last season where he looked like a close to world class striker. But Owen 1997-2002 was immense, right up there with the very best. Frightening pace and astonishing composure in front of goal for such a young player.

I was so happy when you signed with real madrid to me one of the best forwards of all time !
Owens fitness was totally mis managed he was rushed back to many times from injuries for club and particularly with England. Can't help but feel he could have been better managed in that respect, if he was starting his career now it may have been a diffrent story. Shame but the few season he did have he was absloute pleasure to watch. As a United fan I will always smile about the goal he scored against City, never liked him at United until then, but looking back he was one hell of a player.
The best part is the 36 replays of each goal.
I will never forget how simply ridiculous was that this guy was a sub with that goal-minute ratio, when Raul was already dragging himself along the pitch. We suffered the same with Casillas, and now with Marcelo, Isco and even Ramos, no matter how many Fifa prizes he wins. It seems being a superstar in the past authorizes you to play 4-5 very low level years.
