Thanks. Much better explanation then in the Honda Ridgeline manual. BTW, anyone who states that the RL "is not a true pickup" hasn't owned or driven one. It is also, regarding efficient use of space, the best in the market.

I mean Honda didn't do it any favours with the styling (which is why I think people hate on it). but yes it is a very capable truck. and a payload of 1500lbs is nothing to joke about. Hoping to tow with it in the near future to see how it compares to my own Ram 1500!

I do ac work with mine and we probley shouldn't of done this but I towed a 15 foot trailer with 8,000 pounds in it and the truck did great and then we filled the back of the truck bed not that long ago with ac compressors and I didn't think they would rack up that much but it was a whole 2600 pounds in the bed the in bed trunk didn't take any damage either

@@jasonpernish4942 I’ve had my 2008 Ridgeline new since Dec 07, It replaced a 93 Dodge Dakota 4x4 which was a half ton. Loved the Dodge 318 V8 although it ate a rear end, 2 radiators, water pump, crappy front suspension design, Nickel and dimed me for 110K miles I put on it as I bought it used with 50K on the clock. Why I bought the Ridgeline. I have hauled 2000 pounds of chimney blocks (a few miles from my house), towed my brothers Jeep and U haul trailer. Loads of dirt and gravel and firewood. Always has been a dependable rig. Best snow rig out there in the truck category. The front wheel drive aspect of it as a truck is so awesome. People don’t realize that in the regular truck world you are plowing the front end a lot in wet and snow. The Ridgeline pulls you right through. Love it. I wish Honda made a body on frame full size with a V8. Another thing about my Ridgeline is the inside and ride comfort. I looked at Tacoma and you sit on the floor and its more cramped on the inside. Also was 10K more and much less features stock. I like the flying buttress styling. I’m only at 97K miles so I’m gonna keep it.

I just got a 2013. So far this system is working well - I can get in and out of my driveway without any attempt to clear the berm left by plows, which was fairly icy. Have had to hit that switch, and it definitely helps. I don’t plan on off-roading, I just want to not get stuck in a New England winter. So far, so good.

this system works really well in the snow. I believe the AWD system itself was originally designed for the Acura SUV to help it handle in winter conditions and Honda used the same technology on its ridgelines. needless to say you should be good in the snow!

I love my Ridgeline. Bought it used with 88,000 miles 2 weeks ago. It's a 2008. It's like new! Took it off-roading twice and it performed fantastic! On pavement, it drives like a smooth car. Great video!

I have an '06 and I love mine! I bought it to replace a Jeep, it rides so much better, plus I have a bed to haul. I love it when driving on wet roads (AWD) plus the IRS, and does great in the snow. I've never taken it off road though, but I put a nice 2" lift that is easy to install, uses Honda parts, still rides and drives great. I used to build Super Duty (Ford) trucks, some guys will say its not a "real truck" but then I tell them, I haul and pull more than they do in their full size trucks...LOL NOTE: I am not saying my Honda will out haul and pull more than a full size truck, I mean it as most with full size trucks do NOT haul or pull anything, except maybe groceries, a motorcycle or lawnmower.

@@Backin48 Nice reply! I take mine out in the mountians all the time to do some target shooting. Drive it all over the towns of Hemet, Temecula, Idlewild, etc. (California). One day a guy in a 4 wheel drive Ford with dirt bikes in the bed was passing me on a narrow access trail road. I waved him to stop and ask for directions on how to get over the mountain on a tricky trail. He looked at my ridgeline and said, "I don't think that "thing" will make it". I told him, "It's a 4-wheel drive and will go anywhere that "thing" can go." He just shrugged his shoulders and drove off. I made it, NO PROBLEM! On the other side of the mountain, I couldn't firgure out what he was so concerned about! I've got 6 vehicles. Three Mercedes (One S-Class, one E-Class coupe, one SL550), a Nissan Maxima, a Nissan Quest and the Ridgeline. Guess which one I love to drive the best? You guessed it, my Ridgeline!!!

Nice video. I thought those lock buttons on AWD systems meant "locking" a center differential similar to a transfer case, so power is always sent to both the front and rear axles, not necessarily locking the 2 wheels on an axle.

Great video! We have had our "06" RTL navi, since "05" and love it! I thought it was a "locker" but now I get it. I am not too aggressive off road but have used the VTM-4 a few times with good results, never got stuck. My wife learned to drive in snow 8" deep and never had an issue for 50 miles.

I liked it for the trunk space and the way the tailgate opened both ways...

Despite its weird looks it’s been the best vehicle I have ever owned. Love my ridge line to death. She gets me through all the snow/ice storms no problem. Appreciate this video. You explained everything so well in a way that it makes perfect sense to me, a person who is very uneducated and very very confused when it comes to any functions under the hood or body of a vehicle. VTM 4 has been one of my biggest puzzlers owning the ridge line and you saved my ass!! Can’t wait to take my girl off roading. You gave me the confidence. Thank you 🛻

I have a 2013 Honda Pilot 4WD that I have launched my 17' cc boat on a dirt landing along the Northeast Cape Fear River. The river connects to the swamp and wraps around my property. I thought I had seriously screwed up when I went to pull the trailer out in the pouring rain and got too close to the soupy swamp mud. It was as slick as glass but, the VTM-4 straightened it right up and pulled it right up the hill. I only have all season tires so, I was really impressed with it's capability. I must say my heart sunk when I dropped into the swamp mud. I thought I was going to have to get the tractor for sure. I wouldn't recommend trying that on a regular basis but, I have to give credit to Honda on this one. I would have never believed it if I had not done it myself. The Ridgeline and Pilot are very capable 4WD's at least in temporary situations.

Love to hear it! having a rear locking (well almost) differential makes a huge difference. My first truck was a 96 GMC K1500 and the starter died at the end of my parents driveway in January. my old mans ridgeline pulled that dead truck up the driveway which was pretty steep and covered with snow like nothing. first time I realized how capable those trucks are. Just a quick observation, the Honda Ridgeline is not a "truck". Not that I dislike it but it's basically an SUV with a bed if we're going to be real. That being said I had the first year Ridgeline made and was amazed with how much storage it had, GM Ford and Dodge have the making trucks for the last hundred years and never figured out how to put a trunk under the bed. That shit is genius

Coming from a background of owning 4wd jeeps, chevy and ford pickups and a solid axle toyota , I hate to admit.how much I love my ridgeline. I purchased mine after I lost my last jeep to accident and it has been so impressive offroad. Definitely deserves more credit than it receives.

No doubt. I bought a 2023 this summer and it's been great. One small adventure with mud: I was up by a local reservoir and there was a small road that led off the main road. It dropped about 60 feet and I parked right on the little beach there. Daughter and I went on a short hike. Coming back, a freak thunderstorm came up and it rained for about 15 minutes. When we got back to the truck, that small sloped road that was no big deal as hard-pack dirt was now total mud mess and I'm all, "Crap, how am I going to get out of here now?!" I told my daughter that I guess we're going to find out how well mud-mode works. As it turned out, the Ridgeline made short work of it and it was no big deal at all. That was great because if I was driving my wife's RAV4, I know I would've had real problems.

I love to see these things doing what they're meant for. Plus thanks for the info 👍

Great video. Suspension wise, is the 2008 Ridgeline 100% the same as the 2008 Pilot ? Is the Ridgeline a better off roader or not?

I have the same year model as your truck. I used my truck on a project in the winter on a farm with lots of snow. The rear wheels do spin when resistance where felt when I drove across the snowfield. I got stuck a few times on thick snow with all four wheels spinning with engaging the VTM. As for driving on mud, it depends on types of tires you have on. If you have A/T tires but your soil is high plastic like in some areas, chances are you will get stuck no matter what. High plastic clays will stick on your tires good. Overall this Ridgeline is an all rounder truck for typical use.

100%, this system was apparently originally designed for the Acura MDX I believe for better winter use. So totally makes sense that the ridge line is good in snow. the main thing is that the VTM-4 LOCK is not a true mechanical locker so there will be circumstances when both rear wheels do not spin. For example high plastic mud like what you were saying.

Bro, I loved the old skool music, the layman explanation was pretty funny too. You definitely got the concepts down, my daughter has the 03’ Acura MDX with the VTM 4 lock. It started engaging by itself recently. I figured a little more information about the system would help me diagnose it easier. Honestly the switch is probably the problem, but I just found out, a bad ABS sensor could actually effect It also. Anyway, post your music selection my bruv, 👍😉 God Bless

Now my question is do many of these clutch packs fail in the rear end? Do mechanics charge an arm and a leg for repair? And is there parts out there if i ever need to replace it

I would imagine they have failed before but I haven't heard of anybody complain about them failing on a regular basis. I would also imagine that if the clutches fail they are just going to replace the differential unit.

Nice review, I've tested both the new and old VTM4 and I-VTM4 systems and the new one is much better. I did test the Ridgeline with the 9 speed though which has a much better crawl ratio. The old one couldn't climb my test hill, the 2020 can.

Thank you! The new system does seem to be much more capable, granted I haven't looked into the I-VTM4 that deeply. I don't think people realize how capable these trucks can be off-road. A simple 4x4 system without a limited slip or locking option can get hung up pretty easily, especially on something like a steep hill climb.

Not 100% sure on the actual electrical mechanism that activates the clutches but it could be some kind of electronic magnetic mechanism so he may be correct. i'll look into it!

Great video! The Ridgeline has a full box frame rail structure. The body is welded to that structure rather than bolted on. So it's sort-of a hybrid of body on frame and uni-body. Not enough people talk about this.

that's odd because this system was kind of designed for the snow. and no the truck should always send power to the rear wheels when it feels the fronts slipping. the vtm-4 lock will lock the rear differential forcing both rear wheels to spin no matter what.

I just bought a 2013 Honda Ridgeline. I have always liked them. The vehicle is exactly what I need. I used to own a 1989 Ford Bronco XLT (fix or repair daily is a real thing). I live in taxachusetts and I do not go off road. I need a vehicle that can take on the sh*ty roads and get me out of my driveway threw 3 feet of snow to get to work early before the plows finish with all the secondary roads that I take so I can avoid all the fast masshole drivers in trucks that drive them like they stole them. Thanks for the good explanation of how the VTM-4 lock actually works.

the Ridgelines are great truck in the snow. The VTM-4 system was originally designed for better winter performance so you should be in good hands when the heavy snow falls!

Does VTM automatically engage when the front wheels are slipping? For instance, I tow a small boat and sometimes the boat launch gets very slippery. If I'm pulling the boat out and the front wheels begin to spin and lose traction, will the rear wheels automatically engage? From your video it didn't look like it does until you manually engaged VTM4 Thanks

So if the front wheels are slipping the VTM-4 lock will not automatically engage. but the truck will send power the the rear axle. so when the truck detects front wheel slip power will be sent to the rear wheels, But the rear axle will not be locked up. it will act as an open differential unless you manual lock it up. hope that makes sense.

It likely just turns off the traction control system so the computer doesn't limit power when wheels are slipping. You may notice it will bog down when the wheels start slipping which can be less then ideal when you need momentum

My understanding is that Honda calls it "torque vectoring", and the most unique thing about it is that it can (as you aptly explained), direct different amount of torque between the four wheels asymmetrically. I have a 2017 Ridgeline & Pilot both with the AWD system. They do not have the VTM-4 button on them. They have what Honda calls the Intelligent Traction Selector button selector which allows the driver to select normal, mud, snow or sand conditions. The wheel speed and torque vectoring is done automatically. And yes I did say wheel speed. It will control (limit) how much spin it will allow at each wheel when slippage is detected. Wild....

This system is not unusual. Everyone has it. The VTM-4 is better, as it is an advanced limited slip. I would have loved to see Honda do a VTM-4 on the front axle as well. But as usual, 2020 is the "lets cheap out on traction aids" year

@@johnbayliss1098 Not sure what the current (models past 2017 have). Since I wrote the comment on my 2017 AWD Hondas I've sold both of them and purchased a new 2020 model (in 2020) Honda Odyssey. They only come in 2WD configuration. I believe at one time they did sell AWD Odysseys but they didn't sell well so Honda discontinued that drive line in them. From What I can tell, from 2015 (?) on, all the AWD Ridgelines are basically the same. The AWD is full time but how the driver selects the AWD mode has varied slightly over the years. What I can tell you from my experience is the AWD, regardless of mode, works seamlessly and quite well. However, the Ridgeline is not an off-road vehicle. The ground clearance is abysmal and I can tell you from personal experience that if you strike the front "chin"/bumper the damage can be quite extensive and expensive. The Ridgeline is a very capable on-road, mid-sized pickup that has exceptional ride, excellent traction (especially the AWD model), very quite, well built with a reasonable payload and mid-level towing capacity. The 2017 Ridgeline was my second one and I was never disappointed in either of them. They are a little pricey, perhaps not as bad as the Tacoma, but well worth the money. Maintenance is minimal except for the AWD models which require service to the rear diff (which is a major part of the torque vectoring system) about every 30K miles or so. I understand that this service is kind of expensive. I sold mine before this service was required.

When's the last time you changed the Diff transfer case and VTM Fluids?

Looking at a 1st gen Ridgeline because I drive a 1st gen Pilot. Never had to use the VTM-4 but the vehicle climbs snowy hills like a champ! Just got to remember to slow down earlier for stop signs and lights.

I just bought 2006 pilot. For the live me I could not figure out if was all wheel drive or 4wheel drive. I had the button in side of the car. But was not clear about the whole system. I was coming out 2002 Ford F-150. That had a great 4 wheel drive. Not sure about this pilot. Thank you for the video. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼. It help me understand a little more about the system.

I believe so, the Pilot and the ridge line have almost identical power trains. If you have the VTM4-Lock button on the dash. it is the exact same system as the ridgeline!

If I am not mistaken, I believe the gear selector has to be in 1st gear also for it to engage. 08 Ridgeline RT owner w/ 48k.

I got my 2006 Ridgeline stuck in snow (over ice) at the cottage and wasn't impressed with the VTM-4 feature. Only later did I read the manual and realize the feature does not engage while in Drive, which was what I was using. GREAT vehicle for my needs. Now on my 2nd RL - a 2012 bought used with 189,000 Km, now with 235,000 Km.

It disengages at 18 mph, the normal AWD works fine in snow. I don’t see a need for chains, that would just slow you down.

I used it in the ice/snow storm this past winter in KY. It was awesome. This vehicle is a tank.

Great job! I have a 2009 Ridgeline with 101,000 original miles. I haven't used the VTM-4 too much. Once on a heavy snow trip in the Sierra and on rough dirt roads in the Sierra during summer. Very little. Recently had that fluid drained and filled in the rear diff. for the first time. Today I shifted out of the VTM-4 while at a stop and there was a huge lunge in the back end. I do not remember that from my past uses of the VTM-4. Any thoughts on that?

ya that is a bit odd. the only thing i could think of is maybe you we're hearing one of the clutch packs lock up. did the truck drive okay after you engage the VTM-4 Lock ?

@@TheGettyAdventures it drove fine. I was on surface street and I could hear the rear wheel traction on the asphalt. I was thinking a better test would be on some area of dirt to challenge it. Your stuck clutch thought makes sense. I am wondering if the fluid change had an affect. Maybe change it again. Being that I had not engaged it too much I figured 100,000 miles was a fine interval to change it. Maybe I was wrong. Thoughts on that?

@@jeromehealy2925 one thing I would say is never engage the lock on dry pavement. because it will bind up the axle and that's honestly probably what you were hearing. when a vehicle turns (even slightly) the outside wheel has to turn faster then the inside wheel and when you lock the rear axle up with the VTM4 Lock, both wheels are forced to rotate at the same time meaning that either one wheel is going skip or the internal clutch packs in the differential are going to slip causing heat and wear. also make sure you put the factory spec fluid in the rear differential. either way if the truck is still driving well I wouldn't worry to much about it. test out the lock in some mud or sand and see how it reacts.

The VTM 4 lock is to be engaged only from a stop. Drive or 2 or L. Or Reverse. It disengages automatically at 18 mph. Also only on slippery surfaces. Your VSA switch is variable stability assist and that actually turns your rig into a front wheel drive rig only if you turn it OFF. It puts the yellow exclamation point in your idiot light cluster. The Honda 4x4 system is automatic with the ABS and VSA computers to keep you straight and all 4 wheels engaged.

Are you able to put it "Condition 2" manually?

Do you mean can you activate the VTM4-Lock manually? Unfortunately no, there is not a manual option. Nor have I heard of a way to override the computer if it does not let you engage the VTM4-Lock

Okay,I'm looking to buy my 1st Honda Ridgeline & I found the 2011 is the Best of the older models! Your thoughts?

I remember reading in the manual that it won't work in drive only the lower gears I'd this true and then what about normal driving in 4-6 inches of snow. My old Chevy and Ford 4x4 s just pop in 4wheel drive and go I realize this is not actually 4x4 but does give alot more traction

You car should be in PARK ! You shouldn’t be driving in the snow. Stay home, or get someone to drive you ...

It means locking the front axle to the rear axle like a transfer case. If it was a locking diff it would say vtm4-rear or front diff lock on the button

My VTM-4 button doesn't light up so I have no idea if it even works. I've got a 2010 Ridgeline my mechanic says the switches from the factory go bad over time. Has anyone else ever heard of this and how can I troubleshoot this problem? please advise

Shifter has to be in 1st,2nd or in neutral or reverse to engage the VTM-4 button to light up when pressed. Shift into drive it turns off

They have a pretty awesome AWD/4x4 system on them! the VTM-4 system was actually designed for the Acura suv's for winter driving. which explains why they are so good in the snow

My family has a 2007 ridgeline with only 92k miles on it. Timing belt, water pump, tune up done by honda. Also changed transmission fluid my self with honda fliud. And honda did rear brakes and rear differential. Front brakes done by honda too. Newer tires. I used the VTM lock once to pull neighbors work van stuck in yard.

Well, I'd have driven my old Mercedes S320 thru 95% of that stuff. That being said I have a RL and use VTM-4 when launching and recovering my boat on sandy banks and in deep snotty mud at my duck club. Good explanation.

Living in New England winters and never used VTM and never got stuck in snow. Get in and drive. I don’t go off road or on sandy beach

I've had a Pilot in the past,and my wife now has a Passport and IVTM4 IMO is one of the best on-demand AWD systems out there. Her Passport even engages the rear clutches during acceleration on dry pavement as indicated by the car's "torque display" in the gauge cluster. It's a nice system, and effective. It's no match for my 4Runner TRD Pro's real 4WD system, but for a unibody SUV it's top-tier IMO. One thing of note - Honda says to replace the rear differential fluid every 24k miles. This seems excessive, and I know many people don't do it, comparing it to traditional rear-ends using gear oil. Don't make this mistake. This differential NEEDS new fluid every 24k miles. It's not hard to do yourself, but it's a bit of a PITA process and you can have it done for under $100 usually (at least you used to be able to) and it's worth it IMO. I know people who have had to replace their rear diff in their Honda for not following this maintenance schedule.

i have 246,000 MILES on my '07. no problems. replaced the alternator and 1 radiator fan.

200 k is nothing for this truck. As long as it's maintained.

Honda is correct in saying that it does provide equal torque to the front and back. Nothing happens in the front because all that is happening is that it is matching that torque via the transfer case, which is then evenly distributed to both rear wheels when the “lock” is engaged

Im a little confused, ridgeline is a auto 4wd in high speed? And vtm4 lock only works in low speeds. Is that correct?

Yes, so anytime you are in drive and normally driving around the truck is more or less in 4wd auto and will send power to the rear wheels if the vehicle senses the need. in order for the VTM4-Lock to be engaged the vehicle needs to be in either reverse, 1 or 2. it will not engage if the vehicle is in Drive. Once the truck is over 30km\h the VTM4-Lock will also automatically disengage so yes the lock only works at low speeds.

Your vmt4 will not work in Drive, you have to shift down to 1, then press the button.

Well made video. These aren't ugly tho. Throw some different wheels and you're golden. These are much more reliable than a Chevy Avalanche lol.

100% more reliable then the Chevy Avalanche. Gm trucks seem to stop being well made in the 90's.

Also to turn vtm 4 lock on you gotta be in 3rd second or first gear if your in drive it won’t engage

Only works in first and second and reverse when you have a VTM 4 lock in. It will disengage when you’re in third or drive
