Honda Rebel 1100 Review. Completely Unbiased! Is that Africa Twin Motor really that good?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I did a preview on the Rebel a couple of months ago and wasn’t very kind, but I was just going on the specs that were in front of me as that was all that I had. Well today, I’m going to get to ride it.
So, all new for 2021 is the new 1100 Rebel, taking a massive leap in displacement from the rebels that preceded it, but keeping that stripped-down aesthetic.
The rebel series has been going since 1985...one year before I graduated high school
The new rebel is supporting the Africa twins 1100 motor now and is supposed to be the most sophisticated rebel ever
In my preview, I had said that cruisers, in general, come out on the short end of tech features and sophistication and that they didn’t have the options to match their price tag.
This meant that you could buy other retro bikes that weren’t cruisers and they would have better cornering, acceleration, and braking, but for a review, I think most of just want to know if it’s better than the rest of the cruisers out there. So now that I have that out of the way, I’m going to test this bike the way “YOU want me to.
Shot with DJI Osmo Action, DJI Mini 2, and the Instar 360OneR
Onboard sound and Rode Wireless Go.
Special thanks to @LloydminsterHonda for letting me ride their bike.

I am 72 years old with a bad left leg. Handicap I am. I own a 06 Harley Road King Classic at 850 lbs. I have been riding my grandsons Rebel DCT 1100. WOW ! This bike is a total winner. Fits me like a glove. Quick like a rabbit and handles very well in tight spots. The only negative at this point is that I find the seat a bit uncomfortable. Easy fix with gel pad. Hope this helps you all. Safe riding !

I bought the DCT version of this bike on February 16th and took delivery a couple of weeks later. (From Central Florida Powersports) and I've ridden it just about every day since. I love the bike and believe it bests every other bike in this category. Especially in price and features. I'm not a Harley or Indian fan-boy and buy after thorough research. I plan on having this bike for a long time and I plan to ride the wheels off of it.

@Saad Alqarni The acceleration is very fast but the bike is electronically governed to 160 kmh or 100 mph. 160 is fast enough for me however some owners want the bike to go faster. I wouldn't be ok on a 500 lb bike going over 160. What affects comfort on this bike is the length of your legs more than your torso. I am 5' 10 or 178 cm tall and I have a 32" 61cm inseam so my knees are at a comfortable position relative to the fuel tank. Someone with a longer inseam might not like the seat position. I wish the hand grips were a bit higher and further back but I'll get used to leaning a bit forward. I'm used to a V45 Magna where i sit fully upright.

As I was watching reviews on this bike, someone noted that the shakings at high speed, i.e over 140 km/h, was induced by the phone & phone mounts. It was installed just beside the controls on the clutch side. When he removed the phone, all shakings stops right away. Great content budy !

Yes, others have commented on the shaking being caused by a phone since I shot this video. One thing I would caution about is being aware of how light the steering is at high speed. I could see it being caused by cupping on your front tire. It is light, like most cruisers, in the front end.

Hey Buddy I'm back and you're still here ;-) Liked the video very much. As you know I own an Africa Twin (first Edition) with 1000cc, DCT, hightened sspension and hightened seat. That thing is a monster if you're under 190cm you won't reach the groud. It is the first of this class and it has almost none of the ridemodes they have now but it is a hell of a bike and I recon it'll be with me untill the end ;-) I am not big on Cruisers or Choppers but I actually was thinking about a F6C or a Triumph Rocket both are very great rides but in the City of Cologne/Germany they are way to heavy and cumbersome, bit pricey too. So it's great to be back and I'm looking forward to see a lot of your videos soon, until then take care and have a great ride.

Thank you for the review. This bike hits almost all my marks. I am a short rider 5’7” with a 29 inch inseam. I have had many bikes over the years from dressers, sport tourers, and adventure bikes. At this point in my life I just want a fun bike to ride that I can easily flat foot. I wanted a bike with cruise, traction control, abs, adequate power, good handling and ride modes. I also did not want to break the bank on another bike (my wife and I now tour on a can am spyder rt). With my requirements that left me looking at a triumph bonneville (no dealer support in my area) or another BMW (also no dealer support in my area). This is the first motorcycle I have sat on that I thought was made for my body (reach, seat height, width, and weight ). The honda gives me rock solid reliability and a fun bike that gives me an excuse to go for a ride. We will see if it is a good decision a few years down the line. I do wish it was a little prettier like the triumph and more of a classic standard than a cruiser but its somewhere in between. Function trumps aesthetic and my BMW GS was uglier than sin. Thanks again for your excellent review and I just became a subscriber

Most importantly, I would sit on a few to see how well they fit you, this is assuming you know the style of the bike you prefer. I would normally suggest under 500 cc, but those bikes will be to small. I think an adventure bike or a sport tourer would fit you best If you are new to biking set the rider mode to the most restrictive so you don’t kill yourself. (Tenere Tracer, Versys, Africa twin, vstrom are affordable options.

Shaking at 100 mph was due to a phone mounted on the handle bars. We all know the front end on any bike gets light at that speed and the phone mount on the handlebars created just enough wind resistance to cause what felt like a head shake. When the phone case was removed, the bike was very smooth at the 100mph mark.

M, I think what can make the Rebel 1100 work as a “beginner” bike is the ride modes. At 487 pounds, with a low center of gravity, it’s very approachable from a size perspective. Power to weight, though, and it’s got more juice than most any cruiser you might throw a leg over. So if you get this bike, put it in rain mode and take your time learning and practicing.

Why don't you guys ride 2 up when you have a cruiser to try out, surely that's what they are made for? Would this engine and frame be enough for 2? my last Honda was a 1300 Fury and it clearly was.

They are kind of similar actually. Both bikes are kinda low, have good power, and decent cornering. One costs 30% more, but you are also getting quite a bit more power and more tech. Either bike will fit you. I know that you can get forward controls on the vulcan, and as far as I know not on the rebel, which is a bit cramped for larger riders but shouldn't be a problem for you.

You can have finally have a sporty cruiser with none of the downsides. I see no advantages to the American cruisers other than brand loyalty and trying to fit into some dying boomer crowd. Just wanted to know you had it right with the tires being the cause of the shaking. Impresive hindsight given you only rode it for a little bit, it shows you have great experience. I have a 500 and looking to upgrade, as a "modern" cruiser buyer for me this bike has appeal because I am not much of a HD and Indian culture fan, I am not into old biker chrome everywhere stuff, but I do like the look of cruisers, and this has it with a more modern bobber flavor to it. I guess we cruiser buyers or at least me, choose this types of bikes knowing full well that sport bikes are sportier and sport touring bikes are better at touring but we choose cruisers for the look and the flair, lets face it, must of us bikers have bikes as toys and we appreciate them and we buy things we are attracted to. Anyhow, I do agree it would be great if we started getting better tech and capabilities on cruisers, we do need better standards, theres expensive cruisers without ABS which is crazy, I think Honda did good here shaking things up a bit in the class

It will shake at highway speed if you, say, mount your phone to the handlebar and don’t have a windscreen… seen some other you-tubers had that problem. I mounted mine behind a Givi windscreen, no issues at all, and talk about adding some character to the bike! Also deleted the stock mirrors, added new bar ends and bar end mirrors. And if that wasn’t enough to turn some heads, the TBR slip-on exhaust sure gets it some attention.

I like the bike. I've owned many bikes and ridden for years. My wife recently got her motorcycle license and we wanted a bike for her and me. We got two Rebel 500s because I wanted to have both bikes the same. A great bike for her but still enough bike for me. We could have bought two Rebel 1100s but it would have cost at least $6000 more. The only thing the 1100 has that I wish the 500 had is the cruise control.

I’m sure this is a fine bike and will do well with people who don’t like Harley or are wanting a cruiser and expect a little more than what Harley and Indian is offering as far as tech and features. I would even consider it if I were buying again and hadn’t already thrown in with a sportster. But I did, and I love my sportster! I love the feel, the rumble, the vibration, the LACK of tech, lack of modern features. I love the look of my iron 883 sitting in the parking lot or my garage or anywhere it’s sitting! It looks freaking awesome and as cool as it gets! I love riding a Harley Davidson and the fact that it’s an old school design with an engine from the 80s. The rebel 11 is a nice bike. A modern sportster really. But if Harley had made it no one would buy it. It will likely do well with people who are not already loyal cruiser riders or are already big Honda fans. I might have even bought this bike were it available 6 months ago when I bought my iron? I like Honda.....a lot. I own and ride an older Honda silverwing 600. I like my Honda, I LOVE my Harley!!! In a lot of ways the Honda is a “better” motorcycle. But in so many ways it’s not. Not at all. Not even close! It really boils down to the individual in matters like this and bikers are definitely not the most reasonable bunch.

I thought it would be a good option b/c of the mods & the reliable Honda engineering. I believe I made a good choice, as I ride mostly days & rarely even overnight. The mods helped me to work my way back to Sport. (I did take the motorcycle safety class at H.D.) I still use the mods in bad traffic. The only problem is the seat is literally a pain in my butt!! My first "real" bike was a Honda Magna. It isn't so different than this bike, even with the 750 V4. It made 2 more horsepower and less torque all around. The weight was in the 550 range, if I remember correctly. I really enjoyed the heck out of that bike, but found myself wanting more... lean angle, brakes, power (which I didn't really need, but thought I did at the time). I think Honda is missing the mark by not making a Sabre version of this bike. Not the cruiser Shadow Sabre, but the 1980's standard model. If they were to change the frame geometry up and make it a standard riding position with a bench style seat and keep everything else the same (including cosmetics) they could have a nice retro-standard on their hands that would appeal to those of us with large inseams that just can't tolerate the cruiser limitations and riding position. The motor sounds perfect for what I would like. I can tolerate a single disc if it has good feel and the bike is light enough. 500ish is good for weight. Of course everything is more expensive these days than I think it should be, but I suppose the price isn't unacceptable. A shield and a hard bag set would be nice additions to both bikes (this bike, and my imaginary Sabre).

Tyrone Moore the dct is definitely easier on a beginner as the hardest thing to learn is the clutch and shifting. If there is anything that will get you in trouble on any vehicle it would be improper clutch usage. That being said, in my mind it’s important to learn unless you always want to be stuck with a Honda. The 500 is lighter and easier than the 1000, but you will probably want to trade it in after a few months of riding.
