Honda Monkey VS Honda Trail 125 - Which Is Better?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I weigh the pros vs cons of trading my Honda Monkey for the Honda Trail 125. Is one better than the other? Or are they both capable of the same thing? What do you think?

I've owned both and had the chance to compare. From what kind of riding you described you do mostly I think your better off keeping with the Monkey. Also the Trail125 seat is BRUTAL vs the plush Monkey seat. Additionally, the Trail125 has buzzy vibration that travels through the handlebars and foot pegs, which gets uncomfortable the higher you rev the engine. The Monkey is the only bike I never had to swap the seat out on and had almost zero felt buzzy vibration.

@@uonadtehrrocks I'd say yes based on the ease of it having a dedicated oil filter alone for both models. The 5th gear might be nice too on the Monkey. The Trail125's new bash plate cross bar, adjustable rear shocks, and new engine ratios surely would be nice as well. If I were in the market I'd surely splurge for the newer model. Not sure what Honda was doing with that ugly plaid seat topper on the Monkey though.

Totally agree with you. I weighed up the pro and cons just as you did and came to exactly the same conclusion. I live in Thailand so I can get both bikes fairly easy. I bought the new 5 speed monkey a couple of months ago and absolutely love it. Great looking bike and so much fun. I plan on doing some long trips on it too but nothing offroad. Really looking forward to your vids when you eventually go on yours.

Monkey for sure. I really like the Trail 125 too but the Monkey is just awesome and I love having a clutch. I already have a CRF250L and a CB500X so I think the Monkey would really round out the collection well.

I traveled 12 hours round trip to get my trail . Only like 6 on the west coast. So I feel fortunate to be able to get one from a dealership for 5,500. I live at high elevation and my trail does 55. I don’t need to go the the small bit of extra speed that the monkey might go. I’ve already made money with my trail. Gone to Home Depot , hauled tools around ,used the back rack as a set of saw horses, Picked up a pizza , hauled dog to the park. For myself and IMO the trail is way more capable of a bike with a great riding triangle instead of the monkey with a cramped riding position , but go head and tell yourself that the monkey is just as capable. Not trying to sound like a jerk. Oh and Honda canceled all orders for ten bike for 2023 and the trail was one of them. Also if you have a flood you can go up to knees in water.

I ride the hell out of my Trail 125 and have taken it on some pretty tough little trails since owning. I think the Monkey is awesome but for a regular daily ride I really dig the larger wheels. Only real downside is the seat but I was just gonna get it reupholstered and more cushy padding. Dunno where people’s complaints on build quality come from. The Trail is built like a tank. Ideally I’ll end up with both of these sweet machines eventually

The thing I like best about your channel is that you like all sorts of bikes, regardless of displacement! If I had the money, and room, I’d buy both. :o) I was going to purchase a 2022 Super Cub 125 from a dealer… MSRP $3799. According to Honda destination is $200, plus a $100 surcharge. The dealer wanted $595 for the destination, plus the surcharge, and $378 dealer prep. Long story short, over $5400 out the door. The deal did not work out. I found a used 2021 ADV150 with 21 miles on it at a dealership for $4750 OTD. Needless to say it is your fault I purchased the ADV150. I would have preferred a 2022 in red, but they are almost impossible to find. I am glad I bought the ADV! The first weekend I put 200 miles on it.

You made the right choice! I also have a 2019 Honda Monkey and I love it, but I have been thinking about the Trail 125 as well. I started seriously thinking about it again when a dealer about 4 hours from me got an allocation of two of the 2023 green ones, but then I remembered a video TFL bike did where they took a Trail 125 and a Monkey on a camping trip in Utah and they both preferred the Monkey even off road. And then Quasimotard came out with another video where he said he is probably going to sell the Trail. 99% of my riding has been on road and the Monkey is just more capable and comfortable. Ride safe!

Thanks for new video. It's a lot of work editing, adding music, captions. 125 is just too small for longer rides. I would go bigger within the small, fun bike segment to, say, TW200/225 or VanVan200. KLX300 even better for me with many dirt roads and steep gradients.

Good video. I'm in the market for a Honda trail 125. I think adults look like a giant while riding a Monkey. But the trail 125 is a goofy looking bike too. But real bikers like us don't care what people think about us. I have 2 road bikes ( a 950 cc Yamaha and 1200 Harley. But where I live there are a lot of county roads and trails that I could never ride my road bikes on. I may be forced to get a Yamaha TW 200 if I can't find a Honda Trail 125. But for sure I'm getting something small and trail capable in the next few months.

Keep the Monkey, way more fun factor than the Trail. The Trail has some commercial/delivery bike feeling. For similar money there's the Enfield 350, a classic replica built to modern standards with cool bar-end mirrors. I have also found all bikes in short supply these days. Currently riding my trusty DR200.

I'd select the Monkey, not the Trail 125 Here's why, the Monkey has a manual gear shifter with a clutch that can be modulated more adeptly than a semi automatic shifter. The Monkey looks smaller, but its ride height is only slightly shorter than a Trail 125 giving it comparable rider comfort. When riding in the mud, the Monkeh's smaller tires may require more rider skill to keep it upright, but the tradeoff is that it may also feel more agile when riding under less severe road conditions.

Hi Gas Works, I’m looking for a 125cc to learn riding. Mid 2023, I will have time to it. I was in an exhibition and could sit on a Yamaha XSR 125, a Honda Monkey and Honda CRF 300 Rally (like Itchy Boots), perhaps for a later stage for on road and gravel roads. My question : Could the Honda Monkey be the right bike as a learning bike ? Before jumping to a CRF 300l. Is the jump from a mini motorbike to a much higher one not a problem ? Or would it be better to start with the Yamaha XSR 125, which is a standard motorbike (Height and weight) ? Thanks a lot for your work to transmit your experience in this field !

Any one of those bikes would be good to start on. If I had ti choose I would get the CRF 300. It’s big enough and has enough power to grow into. The height won’t be a problem since the suspension compresses quite a bit when you’re on it.

@@GasWorksISO Thanks a lot for your advice and your quick answer. In France we have 3 levels to pass with a motorbike driver license, the 125cc, the A2 (over 125cc and less than 500cc) and the A1 (over 500cc). I’m only interested till the A2, it’s more than enough for me. The instructor told me that it’s wise to start with a 125cc for one season and than to move to the next level, the exam for the A2 will be much easier with this practice. That’s why I will choose first between these 2 125cc and after that moving to the CRF 300 Rally. I was just thinking if I would choose the Monkey for example, could the move to a bigger bike, a problem…(You have this kind of bikes, so you have the experience). Thanks for your reply. Pascal

I’ve got that T-Rex Racing rack system installed on my Monkey. Got it two years ago, along with the 26-liter Givi top-case. It is extremely nice having it. I usually ride it without the top-case unless I need it for something specific. I typically have a Vechkom 7.5-10-liter expandable tail bag on the rack, packed with various nice-to-have items (tools, first aid, tire plug kit, etc). But when I want to use the Givi, it’s very easy to swap. I don’t use that big heavy top plate that comes with the T-Rex rack. I just mounted the Givi base plate directly to the rack. The lockbox is okay, but I just keep things like bungee cords in it. BTW, keep the Monkey. It really is a great off-roader. I’ve taken mine many times on national forest roads and it handles them with ease, despite my 58-year-old, overweight bod on it.

I guess I’ll be the outcast here and say I prefer my Trail 125 over my Monkey. At least I seem to log more miles on my Trail 125 and gravitate toward it when taking quick rides. Don’t get me wrong, I also love my Monkey and fortunately can own several bikes to spend my weekends zipping around on. The one bike I didn’t keep for long, the Super Cub. Super Cub was definitely my least favorite and felt cramped on it. Not to mention the keyless fob system was a pain in the a$$. I may make a video and post it comparing the Monkey & Trail side by side but I’m not much of a video expert. Pavement riding, the Monkey is a slight better “cushy” ride and I attribute that to the seat. All out speed, the Monkey wins out here by averaging 3-4 miles per hour faster than my Trail on a flat straight. Dirt/ Gravel rides I would have to give the edge to my Trail. The larger tires make for a less bumpy ride and ease of going over rocks and tree limbs. I like the backup kick starter on the trail and it’s one of the few bikes out there that have this feature. The rear carrier rack looked strange and out of place at first, but it does grow on you and has been very handy with taking a cooler or supplies on a ride. I do like the clutch on my Monkey, but honestly it’s convenient and lazy to not have to deal with it on my Trail. Actually, I like not using the clutch better than having one. I get compliments on both, but more compliments on the Trail. I do have many of the Gcraft accessories and PIAA driving lights on my Trail so I’m sure that adds to the coolness factor over my Monkey. As far as value, Super Cubs around here are going from $3k to $3.5K used, Monkeys are $3.3k to $3.8k, and Trails are $3.7k to $4.2k. It’s a fact that there are fewer Trails available than others so I’m sure that drives up the price. If I’m betting on future values, I’d go Trail all day long and actually just bought a second Trail 125 for my wife to ride, however it’ll probably just sit in the garage. If I could only pick one, the Trail is my pick.

The best price you could possibly find on a new C T1 25 out the door is 5500 because you're gonna have when they get done with others they're fees they're deep they're prap all their delivery fees your tax tag title it's usually About $1500 more than whatever it says on there and that's if the bike isn't like the C T1 25 which I bought mine with 431 miles and it was like brand new I mean never on the trail's nothing and I paid $6006 then I had to pay 350 Delivery fee cause I was like 400 miles away from the closest dealer I could get one it took me a month I must have contacted a 100 Honda dealerships I checked out the auto traders went through all that stuff and that's the best price I could possibly find and I got 1 everyone told me I couldn't get 1 and I did what she had to push me to get 1 even more I love the bike it's once it breaks in you do it about out like the monkey 55you know but course when you're going up hills It's gonna drop to about 47 I put my extra gas tank on the side i put the front headlight cover with the rack online i also when it ahead and put a Set a rack big metal Box for the back then I also want to hit and got a they make a special speedometer set up for the monkey and the trail 125 is compatible with both and it makes it weak and change your sprocket sizes your tire sizes you can change from having if you decide to go to a big board 143 or 181 you can just type it right in the computer it changes the RP m's on it to 13000 instead of the standard 10000 which it has your gear indicator on it it has your temperature everything is $250 I think it's well Worth it because when you do any of these mods to your bike it changes your speedometers gonna be all and this here it makes everything state perfect it has a warning lights when you're overrebbing the bike It has everything on it and it's really nice so there's every kind of add on you can possibly imagine crash bars to next day I'm looking at changing my exhaust I mean I know you're spending a fortune on these little bikes having fun but I'm 51 years old I have a special needs son and at 3 old dogs and I can't be on the roads doing a 100 miles an hour and take a chance of the accident I drive very locally 20 mile trips at most And generally anywhere from 40 to 55 miles an hour so I enjoyed my bike very much it's awesome it's Honda that's gonna last me forever it's this is the type of bike you cell I so far have about 7 grand into mine with all the ad on's I put on mine I've been bought the center bagnesis Honda C T1 25 with a little claw mark made for the bike to go right up between the seat and the bar's straps onto that rack They're really a lot of fun and they have so much you can do with them and they're very rugged bikes I mean II know from I was pulling to go into the bank and I had a car Pole like he was pulling in to me by accidentally Lil lady nice lady but you know accident ice swung off and went right up the sides of the hill and drove straight up like it was nothing and it wasA pretty high incline now maybe with the new Honda ADV But I've never driven one of those so I can't say but I know on the trail 125 it's greatYou can change your tire sizes your front spot at your rear sprocket you can change your engine sizes you can use just does nothing you can't do with these bikes

The gearing is much lower on the trail that it is on the monkey and you can climb the thing of the trail 125 they say it will never stop it will take forever but it will always climb anything it doesn't have a limit on what you know whether at 30゚ 90゚ it will keep climbing forever they say and I'll tell you I haven't seen avy and it just seemed doesn't just keep going purse gear where that would be really cuz stupid to have on the monkey it'd be better to give it more but snap your higher end speed because it's basically a roadbike

And you also gotta remember one more thing about the trail you can go through water weigh better and way deeper than you can possibly go on the monkey and it is far better off road than the monkey will ever be so when you're looking at dual sport adventure bike that's not gonna break the bank and then if you damage something it's not gonna cost you thousands of dollars because the bike only costs thousands of a few $1000 it can't be beat honestly way better I think than the monkey I think the monkey is actually a more expensive bike I think $300 The monkey is kind of like the graw you know I think that's more of a younger person saying the monkey seems to be more of older than the gram you know Younger but I think the trail is just like when you drive down the road on it everybody is looking at my bike I'm walking up in the parking lot and all the girls are looking at the bike the guys looking at the bike it's just something fun you know it's just it's not like getting a super sporter nothing but it's just a great fun bike you have to try one

That's that speed you just mentioned about the 100 crail 125 that's not true about the 50 miles an hour I live in Florida I am right now 200 pounds 5' 11 and I have the extra gas tank I have the extra side rack for the gas tank my center rack my headlight cover and front rack a 40 pound metal Box in the back I had to get back to make sure it's secure because I carry watches on it when I'm traveling around picking up and dropping off I also have on the bike the new speedometer the guar indicator and me and my helmet and probably about 20 pounds of cargo and my bike does 55 without a problem going down hill course you're going to hit 60 going up Hill you're gonna hit about 50 and yes they are slower than the monkey but when you get out in the dirt you're going to understand the difference in the gearing cause monkeys can't climb like the trail 125 the gearing Justice and therapy is made for all top end you'll see when you get out there then you'll go buy a crail 125 and clean your monkey and keep it really nice forever and you'll keep the trail 125 forever too because for the amount of fun and things you get to do if you're not looking to jump 10' in the air and you're not looking to you know be crazy like we were when we were in our twenties the trail 125 is probably the best adventure bike you'll ever buy it's not super expensive it's not expensive to maintain and all the extra parts are not so much money either that you want to buy for mine's fully insured with the $50 Deductible even if I laid down so I don't worry about if someone steals it or at lay it down or something because it's full Insured

Before you start thinking you're gonna turn that monkey into a dual sport adventure bike go watch some videos of what the trail can do on KZread just type in Honda 125 crail CT and you're gonna be shocked at what you can see that this bite can do and they even try to bring some monkeys out there and it'll be a great thing for you to see the difference between when a monkey tries to do it and the trail tries to do it plenty of videos to show you there's a big difference

I just think the Monkey is a great looking bike. The Trail is cool, but to me, the Monkey has more personality. Even my wife likes it. I'm not a young guy and I'm new to riding, but I share your desire to take a bike on some easy trails, take it slow and enjoy the scenery. It's nice that you can just pick the thing up easy and continue along (I'd imagine). Too bad we live on opposite sides of the country, it would be fun to hit the trails with someone who isn't tearing it up on a dirt bike.

I can tell you that the monkey is a much more solid build. You can feel when you're writing it. It's solid underneath you as compared to the CT125 which feels like it'll fold like cardboard if you hit something with it

If anyone's wondering I just got my new C T1 25 trail in short through geico and I have a $50 double weather I laid the bike down or get stolen damaged it actually what not and fully covered and he also gives you $2000 worth a add on that no extra charge which is very important because I put on about $1200 with the stuff already so I caught a b****** called geico and let them know what you put on and the price of it is also doesn't exceed $2000 for everything you do Then it won't cost you any more money for your insurance I paid a $180 for the entire year at 1 time and pays for everything plus towing so the bite needs be toad it gives you towing as well

And because Honda now has to change the trail For the admissions it is gonna go up in price and if you buy one even if it has a couple 100 miles on for 6 grand if you ever want to sell it it's gonna be a higher sale value because they're always gonna be hard to get because they can't possibly fill the orders that they want here in the United States and now it's going to Great Britain and Europe where it couldn't go before because of the emissions not to mention that that is the number 1 selling bike in the history of the world think about that a 110 million Trails have been sold cubs think about That that's a big difference from what a monkey's how many days they sold and how many of the decks they sold or grams they sold

I agree that guy was a real clown, and didn't know what he was talking about, you can't get a Monkey for 2,000!! I think he should keep the monkey and get a trail 125 whenever he can find one, maybe sell one of his other bikes to make room.

I paid $6006 for mine and they are the There are 3999 and then you have a $1000 between your tax tag title dealer prep and delivery cost so you're looking at it should be 5 grand but I promise you you won't find 1 under 6

Yes a trail 125 is built so well and it is so strong and you can do so much to them whether you want to make it a camping bike you can make it a racing bike they have false tanks you name it these bikes are basically like a lego bike you could do anything to it you can make it A143 you can make it A181 big block or big boy I'm sorry there's just so much you can do to and you can change out the transmission that 5 speed racing transmission changed all the sprockets on them the gears it's really just a lot of fun you know I mean you're not the fastest bikes But I'll tell you what there's a reason why they say it's a Honda and I know a monkey's a Honda too but a monkey is more like a cross between a Mini moto and kind of like a scooter and Trail 125 people are like well as in a motorcycle is a scooter but once you start writing it there is no question it's absolutely a motorcycle and it's so much funny it's so nimble that literally you can sling left to right over the lane but you're shaking your a** if you want to it really is a great bike I can testify to that

No I don't think the trail 125 is gonna hold it to value better than a monkey I'll be honest if they're both too niche bikes I just think that I don't know in the state you're in but in Florida you're gonna pay about 1500 over whatever the sticker price from Honda says for to get your bike set up everything done in out the door some people say they can get 400 off of the delivery fee if they argue enough I don't know if that's true or not I've never seen anyone you know cause especially right now with the bike's been so hard to get in Florida because if you're looking at a grum what grams are getting easier but the monkeys the trails the decis adax a deromist impossible to get in fact any Florida dealer has its eye advertised immediately in fact there's some Florida dealers that are showing videos of their actual bikes 1 by 1 in front of each other because people are accusing them of lying and saying they have them when they don't it's that you know and they're like the trail 125CT 2023 I don't think we're gonna get him here in Florida this year if we do it won't be too very late and I'll be very few there's been a whole letter announced by Honda that because they had to change the engine and do everything they're already out in Thailand and they're already starting to be shipped everywhere else but America and Canada had the most stringent A mission that's why they had to change the engine and this disengine because of the fact that it didn't have the new emissions couldn't go into the UK now the UK is gonna get him and you gotta remember over there 125 Is what you have to start with for I don't know how long I know it's at least 2 years I don't care how long you've been driving a bike in the United States and how big the C c's are when you go to the UK you start out of On A125 and then you have to spend so many long taking other courses and time clock in driving at no point getting go up to A250 so these bikes overseas are very very big and in Japan for some reason the trail 125CT is the number one selling bike right now so it's making it much harder for us to get them here because you know why would they ship me if they want them there And the other thing is as I found out that for some reason the United States always seems to get screwed on all the colors the extra bikes and we pay more money these Honda cell brand new C T1 25 in Thailand the equivalent of American money $2500 out the door in America 5500 out the door It's like your scooter you just bought it has a drum break on the back because it comes from Thailand if you got the one from South Korea it comes with the disk brake and the 160 CC engine instead of the 149CC engine it just depends on what factors making them and for some reason the United States gets to the least I don't know why that is I would think you know we will think United States is the help of the world but apparently invites we're the little guy

All my extras from my crew 125 I purchased off of eBay from Thailand and it was in my house within 4 days i was blown away and the quality is 2nd to none all the tubing is thick well painted everything lines up perfectly none of that trying to bend stuff all the screws are high quality it gives you all the information everything i bought at Thailand because most people don't know this but that's where all these bikes are being made for Honda and Thailand the monkey the trail all of them and Everything the best you can get will be out of Thailand and like I said it's 2nd to none and even when I bought the gear indicator for my bike cause I like having a gear indicator he sent me a link to a KZread video of him showing me how easy it is nothing else to be cut nothing else we spoke Just plugs in perfectly and it takes no time at all he actually made a whole video so I could see how to do it told me how easy it was now it's like laughable how easy this thing is don't be a nervous to have fun with your bike they have everything you can imagine for even fishing pool rackzer's made special money

And I think a Honda monkey is a really neat bike I have nothing against a Honda monkey yet in any way shape or form I just like the idea that my bike is made to go on trails off trails in water out of water on road off road it's so nimble it should literally go anywhere do anything bike and it's so light and easy to work on this bike I bought the service manual for 4999 and tell you everything man I mean it's great you can't beat that I mean it's so easy and it goes anywhere now with the monkey you go off trails you aint climbing you aint jumping with it it's just It's this type of bike I mean it's a great street bike to me the monkey I know they say monkeys can go off road but it's a street bike and it's a great retro looking street bike don't get me wrong I'm not putting your monkey down I think it It's awesome however for me I like the dual sport I have a scooter that is a 200 that does 75 miles an hour so it's not like I'm looking to buy a bike for super fast speed I'm not so I'm trying to get myself killed by just like you know driving and locally and on that's just a great low bike and it's fun working with the collection you know it's just fun
