I’ve owned the CT 125 for nearly 2 years now, bought it to replace my Suzuki 350 Dual Sport. I love this bike, it makes me smile every time I look at it. As mentioned by others, it always draws attention when I take it shopping. As an engineer, I’m very critical of quality and I must say there is not a single part on this machine that is not top notch quality. Having advanced technology isn’t bad either: EFI, ABS, digital display etc. What I would change, either an additional 50cc’s or an additional gear (or better yet, both). Since I’m almost 80, light weight is important to me to get out of a tough take down, or putting it up on the rear carrier of my van. The step-thru frame also is desirable to avoid getting pinned or leg crushed. If the set is not to your liking, I would suggest adding an air cushion. That made a 2,200 mile trip through the Australian outback doable without any discomfort. Back here in California, I’m looking forward to exploring the deserts carrying extra fuel & water in the roomy utility box on the back.

The CT125 is a wonderful machine. I’ve been so impressed with its overall quality and durability. And I agree with everything you mentioned, especially having a 50cc larger engine or a 5th gear. Perhaps in the future we will get that. Anyway, ride safe and thanks for watching!

Honda missed the mark on the 125, I was so excited they were bringing it back. I've road CT 90's since I was 7yrs old. I thought they were going to make it capable of at least riding at 55-60mph so I could ride on the main roads without holding up traffic. Well it doesn't and on top of that no high-low range...didn't Honda learn their lesson with the 1980 ct110 without dual range? I see no advantage to the new one over my classic CT's and I love the low range capability of the oldies. If they added another gear & more power I would have bought two. Instead I bought an XR150L & ride my CT90's on backroads

@@bryhul6534 the trail 125 isn't meant for highways. its great at what its meant to do. I love it! I got an Africa Twin for the highway and faster off road runs.

It’s hard to beat a 150 with a 5 speed. Super fun and just enough power to move nicely without getting into much trouble. They really hit the sweet spot for fun per dollar.

@@JohnnyGTV123non issue after a bit of ownership. Using a trip meter is always best, and that’s exactly what the reserve is for! You get used to it, and many folks carry a small fuel bottle.

My green trail 125 - for $3,999, was $5,125 after taxes, tags, dock fees, fee fees, etc. But they know once you come in to buy, they've already got ya, and it's not like you can find one gently used - alas. I also can't figure out whey the 125 is so expensive, but I think it's just the kitsch value?

Love the idea behind both but I'm leaning toward the XR. $1000 is a huge price difference between these two little bikes. That's a ton of farkles before you even get to the trails price point. Thanks for doing this comparo

As for price difference, Cub Trail was made in Japan, while XR is made in China. Also the difference between Fuel Injection and Carburetors. However, Honda China has no quality control issues whatsoever, it is as good as anything made in Japan.

@@victoriazero8869 I've read the xr150l that we get in the US is made in Mexico by Sundiro-Honda, the Chinese joint venture. I wonder if maybe Honda manufactures most the parts and Sundiro assembles. That would explain the overall quality of the bike, cheap prise, AND the rough frame welds.

Sundiro was bought by Honda because they have mass production capacity already (Just like Wuyang, the OTHER Honda China), so Honda send quality control team to ensure the parts quality is good enough. In your case, then it would be the Mexican factory that assemble the bikes, while Sundiro produce parts based on Honda's qualification.

Thank you so much for this very in-depth, comprehensive review of the XR and the Trail 125 and comparisons and contrasts. I just brought home an XR150l yesterday. It took a couple of months between ordering and delivery. FYI, the bike was $3,900, all taxes and fees included. No options. I will find a skid plate and bark busters in the aftermarket. I have enjoyed the bike very much so far in the 25 or so miles that I have ridden it. Very comfortable and smooth. I was really impressed by the ride quality and suspension quality given the very small front fork diameters. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh 190 lb, and the bike handled me with no problem at all. Bumps and road imperfections and potholes were soaked right up. Surprisingly polished for the price point. Exhaust is VERY quiet; a huge plus in my book as I can explore without drawing attention. There is quite a bit of seat sag, at least a couple of inches, depending, of course, what you set your rear monoshock preload to. I love the very gentle nature of this bike. The delivery just happened to coincide with my daughter's birthday. It will be a starter bike for her. I pray it will bring her many miles of smiles, and I expect fully that it will deliver on that! By the way, the bike looks great! I struggled with whether to pick the black or the white. I'm very glad I picked the white for visibility reasons, and I believe it looks better in person as well. Personal preference, I guess!

Simplicity is underrated sometimes!

I have to admit that when I saw the CT125 at a local dealer, tears welled up in my eyes from a rush of my fondest childhood memories of over 50 years ago, sitting between the legs of my older brothers, at the edge of the seat and steering and operating the throttle while they would shift and brake. (My feet didn't even reach the pegs) I quickly learned to give a quick little blip of the throttle in concert with their shifting. ( we had a pair of early 70s CT90s) ***I was recently debating over these two and had decided on the XL, when an opportunity came up on a like new 22 KLR650 Traveler for 1k over the CT125. I decided to go in a different direction and get the KLR, however I certainly respect what a smaller displacement bike brings to the table. ***this was a fantastic comparison video as I still have a general interest in the bikes as well as the "Mecca" that you live and ride in. I will definitely be heading that way on my KLR from the coastal plains of NC, as I've been that way by car and know what is there. 😉 👍

I have a 1972 CT90 that has been fairly well cared for, and I’ve been mostly using for joy rides on country roads and for light errands for the past 17 years. It IS a blast from the past! Enjoy your KLR650, as it’s a great all around machine. I have had a 2003 KLR from new that now has 68,000 miles, and I’ve had no major issues in my time of ownership. Just check the “doohickey”. I changed mine at 5000 miles, and put an Eagle Engineering tensioner on. Anyway, great comparison video! Gonna subscribe right now! Take care!

It’s puzzling why everyone is concerned with the highway capability of these small bikes. Wind, top speed etc. and other nonsense. The point is to seek smaller roads or no roads and enjoy the adventure. Highways are boring as hell and have zero character.

I’ve found the CT125 to be the perfect farm/hunting bike. I’ve also taken that little thing down some extremely difficult ATV and single track trails that I couldn’t believe I managed to get down.

The CT125 is really capable! I know a lot of folks are bummed it doesn’t have the high/low switch the old ones had, but it can still get around really well!

Great review. I have a 2022 Trail which is my first bike and I agree with everything you said about it. I still have the stock tires on it but will be upgrading soon as well. Love this little bike though!

Great review it was an amazing turn of Honda to start making practical simple bikes again like these two and the 300 at a reasonable price. The 300 is the cheapest and best adventure bike I ever had. If it was not for the extreme distances and need to have 700 k +autonomy and ability tocarry lots of gear we need in Australia. I would probably be happy with the 150 also. Great little machines. Nothing like the big Dakar dream bikes that are very expensive over complicated and hard to use in the tight trails.

XT225/250 are lighter weight and better off-road than the CRF 300L. And the old DR350 is the same weight and better all around then the CRF300L. You missed out on two cheaper than cheapest and better than best adventure bikes that you could have had!😊

I do desert treks which need 700 ks and over autonomy so being able to carry the weight and still be able to get over the sand dunes is important to me I have tried the other bikes but they can do it fully loaded but not as easy as the 300 and can become annoying. The 300 has just enough torque to work well loaded

Watching this video because I have a CT125 that I've put over 16,000 miles on, the majority of which was a cross country (and back) tirp. I live in northern California where we have a lot of logging activity. Our logging roads are pretty harsh on the CT125 and I'd really like to add something like the XR150L to my fleet. The CT is quite stiff in the rear and when you go through harsh pot holes or ditches the rear end comes down hard. My rim is dented a little bit in one spot but it does have a wider rim, and heavier gauge spokes than the 1986 CT110, the other bike that came on the trip. If you have trails with hard packed dirt and rocks poking out making the ride bumpy and harsh, the CT125 is not the most enjoyable thing. (The CT's are still the best bikes ever dont get me wrong) My favorite thing about the CT125 is how quiet it is, I can ride up someone's dirt road and they'd genuinely only know I went by if they were looking out the kitchen window and saw my (small) dust cloud. The stealthy-ness is fantastic, you will hear other riders in the woods before they hear you. Downed trees, even just 2-3 inches in diameter are a full stop and leg the bike over it moment, I'm sure on the XR you can just slow down a little bit, pop the clutch and hop over it. Not happening on the CT, at least not more than a few times.

I love the CT and would love to have one of the older ones. I love the CT and most of what I do out here with it is exploring service forest roads. I think it's perfect in that regard but I know what you're saying about potholes and bumps. It can be quite harsh as it really doesn't have all that much suspension. The XR is quite nice and has just about double the suspension of the CT125. I've had it on some washed out, bumpy stuff and it felt pretty smooth. I think in the future we will see some good suspension upgrades for it too. And boy, if you think the CT is quiet, wait until you hear the XR. It's one of the quietest bikes I've been on. It's wonderful when you're out in the woods exploring. The XR150 and CT125 are awesome and I really think they're both great bikes to have in your lineup.

Great descriptive video. We just purchased (ordered) 2 yesterday- one for my son to get (to drive around his college campus ) and the other for my wife. We own a horse farm -boarded on 2 sides by a river. She’ll use it around the pastures, trails along the river and probably small commutes in town. We have small CRF bikes (50, 100 and 125) as well as a Honda Rancher and a Kawasaki Mule . This seems like it’ll be a fun addition for my wife and a great campus commuter for my son.

0:55 Despite being much expensier Hondas NXR150 (now 160) in Brazil never came with a pre-load ajustable rear shock spring, good for you guys! When worn out some of us do replace it with a stronger Hornet600 shock absorber (from Hornets built until 2014 I ecall but maybe wrong). Another substitution we like to make (duno if this will pay off for you guys,)is replacing the front wheel with a 21 inch specially if one like to go moe off-road,( but the speedometer will then indicate less speed than true)

Love mine. Nothing but fun even as is. This is now my nice day daily driver. My primary had been a 1 ton 3500 turbo dually which was only getting about 10 mpg in town with $4 per gallon diesel. It does strain a bit pulling my 5000 pound trailer lol.

I atill wish theyd cram a 250 in the trail and add a regular clutch. So you could actually take it on the highway. Imagine a grom the same size but with a bigger engine

​@@TheAnnoyingBoss That would definitely defeat Soichiro's design mission for this bike. He wanted the driver to deliver food or cary an item without a left hand clutch lever! Also it has to fit the budget of a third world user so even 125ccs is pushing it. What they could have done is kept the high low transmission from the CT110 (105cc's)

I think I know what you mean, that the XR is more capable as a recreational vehicle with more power and ground clearance. But the CT125 is a more capable campground bike. Will carry more gear from the campground store, be at firewood or groceries. More capable maneuvering within the campground. And the retired owner will more easily get on and off of it and onto the RV Moto carrier. The CT 90/110/125 definitely more capable in their realm.

I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a 125 when the 150 emerged from the blue. Got a white 150l in my garage can't be happier for the price. Plus I understand the clutch transmission lasts longer than the cub trans

Great review of two awesome little motorcycles - thank you! I have a 2014 Honda XL200 (carb fed) and I find it to be a slow, light, capable, and extremely fuel-efficient machine. I do own two other bikes (a BMW GS1150 Adventure & a BMW GS 650 Dakar) but in tight technical offroad riding, the little Honda is perfect for me! Being 63 years old, the lightweight Honda is my go-to bike for trail and offroad riding. It's been a super reliable bike, with absolutely zero mechanical issues. I think both of these bikes will be great in anyone's collection, but sadly we don't get the CT125 in my country. Pity, as it's such an unusual bike! Check your intake manifold, exhaust pipe at the head, and your exhaust tip. They often add restrictor plates to limit flow, or give it a deliberately undersized exhaust tip. I’ve had to pull them out of both my Honda and Yamaha mid sized trail bikes.

Nice review/comparison. Im 6'2" also and I fit fine. Its the perfect bike & price for here in the Philippines.. You will have to convert the headlight feed to DC from AC before doing a LED. I just did that and installed a LED 2 days ago. Waiting for my LED tailight bulb to come in..makes a BIG difference. I swapped the horn to a PIAA and it's crazy LOUD. Wide motoctoss footpegs are available, they make a big difference too. In the meantime, take the rubber insert off, it will expose the teeth..

Thank you for the vid!! As someone in their 50's, living on a farm but never having ridden a bike, an "old" AG-90 or CT-110 sounded like the ticket. But they're hard to find, attract an "antique" value, and you'd almost need to be a mechanic just to keep them running. You've helped me ID the XR150L as "probably" the right choice for me - an entry level bike I can both ride on road and round the farm, and should be good for 20 years! (And if I fall off, and say "that's it - never again", it wasn't TOO expensive to give it a try!). Thanks!!

The Honda CT125 is primarily used by Australia Post for delivering mail to the residential areas in Sydney, Australia. I have spoken to many of the postal workers and every one of them loves the CT125 and say it goes everywhere and can get in and out of everywhere.

It’s probably my favorite bike ever. It’s just such a hoot and it’s so beautiful. I’ve taken mine to some gnarly places and it impresses me every time.

Great comparison between the 2 bikes. Very thorough and based on personal experiences which gives us all a better side by side idea of how they compare. Thankyou for doing this. Curious about the huge weight rating difference between the rear racks. I guess the Trail allowing for approximately 30 more lbs than the 150 is because of no added possiblity of passenger weight? Not sure though. Makes me wonder if you could carry more than 11 lbs if strictly riding without a passenger on the XR? I love the classic/retro looks of the trail. Especially when in that green color I've only seen on KZread. The XR seems so light yet so capable at the same time. Strange how differently they're priced. Almost seems like the XR would be higher priced than the trail because of it being more capable. Your time and effort in putting this segment together are invaluable. When and " If ", we ever get the Dax for sale in the states, I'd love to see and hear one of your deep dives into what you think about it too.

In regards to the rack I’d say it probably has to do with how they’re mounted onto the frame and what the mounting points on the frame are like. Although that’s just a guess. I am going to put some gear on there to test things out a bit. I’ll follow up with a video about this in the future. The green Trail is beautiful. I am really glad they brought that color to the USA. I hope they bring the sand color in the future too! And the Dax! It’s like you could read my mind. I really want one of those. I’m hopeful we will get those available here in the future too!

Excellent side by side comparison! I've had countless, mainly dual-sport bikes over the last 43 years. Thanks to an on-going pinched nerve down my one leg, tall, heavy bikes are no longer an option, so an XR150, mounted directly onto the left foot peg with the side-stand down - is my daily rider, learner rider instructor, closer-to-home adventure - bike. Like you mentioned, having almost twice the suspension travel, more ground clearance and a clutch with 5 gears makes it a clear winner for me. I paid less than the equivalent of $1K for a used 2015 model, in 2020, with about 3000 miles on the clock, here in darkest Africa. 9000 miles later and it still hasn't needed anything other than DIY maintenance.

Rack weight is frame mounting issue. But also the fact that CT125 has twin shock (an ancient design twenty years ago, even more so today) and you'd be surprised how much can you overload them without issues (daily life of southeast Asian). As for price difference, Cub Trail was made in Japan, while XR is made in China. Also the difference between Fuel Injection and Carburetors. However, Honda China has no quality control issues whatsoever, it is as good as anything made in Japan.

really glad to see the small bike return in popularity ..in late 70s early 80s a friend had a Honda 100cc street bike and he rode it everywhere and allot of time with me on the back as teens but the trail is nice but the $1000 is hard to justify and the carb XR150l is a bike I can work on a fix and the fuel injection as nice as it is later can be a problem ....

What a fantastic review! I agree with your assessment 100%. I'm fortunate enough to own the Trail 125,,a crf300l and a KTM 390 Adventure so as you can see, I have my bases well covered. I love each of my three bikes for for entirely different reasons. Having said that I would not care to own only one of any the three. I equally like back road twisties with some easy dirt roads (390), I like single and double track dirt (300) and I like just tooling around town or really go darn near anywhere at a pedestrian pace (125) I think the new 150 would be a really fun bike but with owning the 300 I just can't justify it. Again....very accurate review of the two bikes. Have fun. I"ve yet to take the 125 on an extended camping trip but youve encouraged me. Thanks

I’m a new rider deciding between the a 2024 Trail and a 2024 XR150L. This video is very informative about the differences between the two including in how they perform on dirt trails and on-road. The Trail has such heritage and a definite “cool” factor that the 150 does not but, in the end, I think the 150 is really what I’m looking for based on how I intend to use it. Trail exploring for landscape photography, back road rides and a little highway only when necessary. Thanks for the info and great video.

Excellent. I want the CT. But it’s easier to find a unicorn around here. I had a CRF 150. Does the XL use the same engine?

Best review if this bike I’ve seen yet, and it will be hard to top if another comes out. Did you use a follow along drone for part of this ride?

Mini motos are their own thing. It's true about the value but the small form factor does come at a cost. There are many benefits some appreciate so they sell but dollar for dollar a full size bike will always be better.

enjoyable informative video. All motorcycles used to be basic like the XR150. Halogen headlights, once they were developed were the bright ones.

I live in the same area and know Bent Creek well. Thanks for pointing out the gaps in the Trails gearing as well as the less capable suspension. The Trail's inability to smooth out rough areas of dirt roads I think would make all-day exploring tedious, fatiguing. Maybe the Trail's best use is for hunters, farmers, foresters, campers who just want to get there with whatever gear they need to carry and are willing to take their time getting there. Other videos show riders doing a lot of duck-walking, which is fine but slow. Negotiating off-pavement with skill and for fun is not the aim of the Trail. Both bikes have their own use case.

I'm just battling to understand the part about preference for what you're using it for, 'cause it seems like one can do everything the CT does - with the XR - but better? Did you physically feel that the rear drum brake on the XR was inferior to the CT's disk? Same goes for the carburettor vs EFI? I think you'd be surprised if you had to tally up the score for each category of these bikes performance against each other. It amazes me how the XR's almost double suspension travel and better ground clearance vs the CT, only results in a bit over one inch increased seat height? I'm wondering whether you would have bought the CT (for your own use) if you already owned the XR 😅

Hey maybe you said but I missed it or else you said in the comments somewhere, but where in Pisgah Forest near Brevard or Asheville are you riding in this video? I plan to head that way in the Spring and like the roads you're on. I have a XR too and love it.

In this video I’m on Bent Creek Gap Road which goes from Bent Creek Experimental Forest up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then becomes Wash Creek Road. You can ride this down into Mills River and then turn onto Yellow Gap Road which will take you out to 276 which connects Brevard to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

If someone told me i could only ride the ct125 for the next 50 years; i would thank them and enjoy the ride. Im sure the XR is a fine bike but no other motorcycle ive owned has been this fun.

@OffRoadRodeo I read online this gets 124 miles per gallon or 346 miles on it 2.8 gallon tank . I will be putting that to the test And some1 said I could remove the baffle on the stock muffler to make it not so quiet . Can you comment of these 2 things at all ?

I saw the xr150l at the dealership and if I had a pick, I would go with the ct125. The ct125 has much higher quality components. I think the xr150l is a good option over the Chinese bikes. If I was going to buy an entry level beginner dual sport, spend the extra money and get a TW200 or KLX230s

I’m thinking a Milwaukee pack out specifically the “large toolbox “pack out would be great on the back of this thing it’s got a nice weather seal on it to keep air humidity out and a place for a padlock and it matches the bike

$3k for 150cc Honda is hard to beat. My first bike was Yam xt250 and after I bought four other bikes, I still love it and hope to keep it for long time. Lost count of crashes as it took me to some stupid places. Took it on 400+ miles camping trip. Used old pants with legs strapped to passenger pegs and another 45L dry bag tied at back of seat. Put it on the hitch carrier on the back if truck and took it in vacations. If I had time, I would love to take it on Trans America Trail, at least part of it.

I know the brochure says it's pro link but that shock looks solid mounted to the swing arm. Is there linkage at the top of the shock? Or is Honda just calling the shock itself "pro link" even though there doesn't seem to be any linkage?

Great review! We can't keep either 1 of these models in stock. Doesn't help honda is either trying to control their market or that they are still having issues as they claim from Pandemic. Where did you manage to find the headlight guard? Haven't seen that model/brand yet.

Thanks for watching! I lucked out getting both of these as they’ve been so popular. This is the Revolution front rack for the CT125 from Beezdeals. I think they’ve updated the look since I purchased mine. I think it’s a bit speaker than some other options out there.

Thanks for the comparison. At my age and abilities the trail 125 would work best, but the price is hard to take even with the advanced electronics and lighting. I would never take it anywhere harder than what you rode for this comparison.

I loved the Shinko 244 tires for all around riding. Great for low power motorcycles. s narrow front tire helps in gravel.

I was looking at the trail or the super cub or grom as my first bike, in beginning you said you made mods for the trail because your tall, could you tell me what mods you made and how much they cost? I'm 6'4" and know im probably gonna be cramped on these kinda bikes.

On the trail the first thing I did was spin the handlebar mounts around as it’ll give you another 1-2” of reach for the handlebars and keep your legs away from them better. Some people add handlebar risers but I never have. I also cut the heel shifter off as it was useless with my long legs. I couldn’t bend my foot back to reach it and it just got in my way when seated or standing. Some tall people cut off the bar behind the rear seat but I never did that. I would probably just put a piece of foam (like a handlebar cover from a dirt bike) over it.

I live off a gravel road. About a mile ride before I get to a paved road. It's not too bad of a ride on my street bike when it's packed down. But after they re-grade it and/or put more gravel down, It could be a handful at times to ride on. How do you think the XR150 would do on loose gravel?

I think it’d be fine but I’d either air the tires down or I would replace them with something more off-road worthy like Shinko 244’s

Note on the XR150L: while the tires are good in rocky terrain and dirt, they have the traction of a jelly donut in the slightest mud. The tread is rather tight, packs easy, and has a hard time self-cleaning. So far in the USA I cannot find any other tires that fit it.

People need short riders reviews

I bought (was on a wait list for 8 months) the first two XR150L’s that came into my local dealer. I reset the trip odometer when I filled them up. I have 155 miles on the one and I’m still on the regular tank… so fuel mileage is pretty good.

What i love about ct 125 cub is brake brakes fuel injection abs the great front end planted feel it has been tuned for love end mid range .i ride as work bike .streets ahead on honda step thru for my postie runs .tires great too i slid front because slippery footpaths and quickly regain grip .michlean city tires .i love know how u made more room , am 6.1 and have large box for my mail on rear rack .did u move handle bars forward .or the seat.also the bag hanging of the bars .is that honda assecory

I spun the handlebar mounts around and it gave me maybe 1” of extra room. The bag on the CT is a Chrome Industries Handlebar Bag for bicycles.

I had the CT125 and while more fun than the CT90/110 bikes, just didn't cut it. I sold it and found a 2020 Yamaha XT250. Light years better in every way. I also have a 300L. The XT250 is a spare bike. Easy to ride and easy to put my 10 pound Scooter pup on. Just my opinion.

why doesnt mine have adjustable shock?

Quick point on the rack weight comparison. The CT rack is displacing a 2nd rider. The XR rack is on your tail frame. There isn't a sticker saying your 2up needs to only be 45 pounds. If you treat it like a pack horse and sling "saddle bag" soft luggage over your passenger seat it should carry more than 45 pounds no problem.

Thanks for watching! I know that Ohlins makes some after market suspension for the CT125 but I’m not sure what there is, or will be out there for the XR150. It’d be cool to get a good comparison of the TW200 and XR150. I think they occupy a similar spot in Honda and Yamaha’s lineups.

I’m looking for something to get me around town for mostly coffee shop runs, light errands, and other things where a car feels like overkill, but a bicycle would be too sweaty by the time I arrive. Would you go Trail 125 or something like a Ruckus?

Hey, that’s awesome! In Trail vs Ruckus I’d pick the Trail every time. First off, it will be more useful for errands because you have the giant rack to put a crate or box on to store groceries or gear. It has a higher top speed, which is going to let you get across town easier. It’s also going to let you get into some adventure riding, should you have any desire to. (I’m currently doing the Smoky Mountain 500 right now with 3 other people on Trails!) You’d be much happier in the long run with how utilitarian and downright awesome the Trail is.

I have a ct90, hi/lo trans, lighter trail riding, can carry it on the back of a 2dr wrangler. Also have a Himmi.. between the trail 125 and the 150, I'd go 150.

i really loved both these bikes, but in India its not being manufactured by Honda Company, I have a 110 cc Honda Activa Scooter... really enjoyed riding it since 2013......

Great video - I'm in week two (250 miles) on my CT, and it's a cool bike for sure. I'm not sure I shouldn't have gotten the 150, but ... the CT is just so durn COOL lookin'? Definitely a head-turner (and I like the green). 1) it doesn't go up steep hills from a standstill, even with the 13 tooth sprocket (which I'd say is the best upgrade for $16 if you plan on doing much off-road / hilly terrain). 2) It's $5,000. 3) The mirrors are, for me (6'2 & 205 lbs), almost useless. I'm pretty thin for a tall guy, but maybe my shoulders are broader than I thought? But I love the rack - wish the aftermarket front racks weren't so pricey, and the gas mileage is astounding. Had to tighten the chain after 60 miles, but hopefully that was just new-chain-stretch. Two questions: 1) what size bolt did you use to mount the box (I'm on the way to HF right now, lol) 2) Gun to your head - which one would you pick if you HAD to have only one? Many thanks!

Hey, I'm sorry I'm just replying to your comment! Hopefully you can still pick up the correct bolts. The bolts needed for the rear rack are M6 x 1.0 thread pitch. Yikes, that's a tough question. I'm still getting to know the XR but for now I'll have to say if there was a gun to my head, CT125. I love that machine. I always wanted an old one and had missed out on a few and when Honda announced it in 2020 I had just sold my big 1000cc VStrom and instantly knew that it was what I wanted. I called over 30 dealers before I found it in rural Pennsylvania at a dealer. There's just something about how cool it looks that I love. It's so reliable. I've had no problems with mine. But, ask me again in a year when I've gotten to know the XR fully!

@@OffRoadRodeo MANY thanks! Got those bolts today from Lowe's and attached a Food Lion basket to the bike- (I'm not proud, but I DID spray paint it gloss black first). My acquisition of the green Trail 125 mirrors yours - I called everywhere on the Eastern Seaboard, only to find one on a truck headed to Hickory NC, about 2 hours from the house. Who knows - we may bump trails some day. Thanks again for the review and other data :)

Great Video!!! Very informative comparison 👍. The 150L is hands down the best bang for the buck. The CT/Trail 125… while it is a great bike it’s no Trail 90/110. Just hoping Honda would put the Hi/Lo range back in these and throw in the 5 speed and then the Trail 125 would truly be back and be worth the asking price… Hello Honda are you listening 😎. (And don’t forget the spare gas can)

Totally agree! A hi/low would be wonderful and the spare fuel tank would be awesome. I wish they’d sell it as an aftermarket accessory at the very least!

The CT and the Cub have awesome luggage rack. It is super stable and durable. Not going to break under any circumstances. Because it is attached to strong points next to the shocks.

@@OffRoadRodeo It blows my mind though people now are having to pay so much for new bikes. I had a 2010 Cub-clone by SYM (who was licensed to produce Honda Cubs). I recall a dealer here was selling these SYMs for under 2000. It had drum brakes and carburetor, but both worked very well. Now I regretted selling it. It was so much fun and reliable transportation. I drove it on a few long road trips.

Biggest con on the CT is the LED headlight. Absolutely worthless. Auxiliary lights are a must 😊

This is a wonderful comparison video. Thank you. I am torn as to which one to choose. At 71 yo, the CT125 feels like the right choice due to its weight, reliability, and ease of use, but the XR150L keeps up with local traffic better, which makes me feel safer. I seem unable to find a small bore motorcycle with the features of the 125 and the horsepower of the 150. What I need is a Trailrider CT150, I think. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

@@OffRoadRodeo Thanks for your response. I haven't looked at the TW200 yet so I'll give it a peek. The ADV150 is also tempting, but I am concerned about ground clearance with that model. Right now I guess I am leaning slightly into the 125, because I think it will be the bike that best ages along with me. I've watched a few of the Some Guy Rides vids, and he makes it seem very workable. The step-thru design, slow roll speed, cargo capacity, reliability, and ease of use bode well for future me. Hopefully if I last another 10 years, it will too! 🤞

@@OffRoadRodeo Coming at you with another question. I can possibly buy a "used" 2022 CT125 for $4k off Marketplace, so no additional dealer fees. The 2023 model is apparently in dealer stores, and the only thing different besides the color seems to be the bore/stroke specs (bore reduction of 2.4 mm, stroke increased by 5.2 mm) and the compression spec (now 10.0:1). Would you say the changes to the engine are worth an extra $1K for the 2023 model? Not a lot of info out there yet comparing the two models. TIA.

videos dont do the rear rack on the cub justice. its SO big! I've genuinely put my entire weeks shopping on that rack.

It comes stock with a 19” front and 17” rear in the USA. Apparently in other markets where it’s sold it’s an aftermarket mod to put a 21” front on.

CT is a super great scooter. A very powerful *scooter* . A scooter, for in town & nearby transpo, to get groceries and stuff, even travel to work, if close. The XR is a scrambler-road cycle that is a step up from the CT. It's off road better, and can do everything a scooter can. This can go on a highway when necessary.

Well said, but don’t underestimate the CT. It is slow but capable. I just rode the Smokey Mountain 500 on it. But I was dreaming about coming back and doing it on the XR instead 😂

Excellent comparison review, I just got a used/new Trail loaded with farkles with 317 miles. However if I were wanting to do more trail riding, it seems you cannot beat the value of the 150 and the price amazing, my Beta xtrainer is more capable in more technical but $8k..uggh.

I’m looking for a commuter that can do motocamping trips. I’m pretty big and like the bigger power of the 150, with saddlebags, can the 150 compete as an adv to the Honda trail?

The 150 is surprisingly capable. I’ve ridden it pretty hard and had no major issues (other than a bad battery.) I’m 6’2” and about 200lbs and it gets me and my gear around just fine. That being said, if you’re taller than me you may want to consider cutting the hump out of the seat foam to allow more room to move around on the bike. Where the Trail wins is in EFI and aftermarket accessories such as racks. But it does sit noticeably lower and has less power.
