I drove both cars and love my Kia.
fully loaded rio vs a base civic. yeah the civic is more refined but the interior is also cheap. and after owning several cars with cloth seats and leather I must say leather is not an option to skip on specially if you have kids. trying to clean out spills out of cloth seats absolutely blows. also heated seats and steering wheel is something that's hard to go back to not having. people just are just stuck in the past and cant see pass the kia logo that's the only reason people look down on it. but to everyone that can see pass the brand they'll see a good car.

They make a valid point. You can spend a particular amount of money to get a smaller car with more features or step up a size to a larger car with less content. With the larger car you'll likely get a quieter, plusher, and roomier car. So it boils down to how badly do you want all the gadgets. I'd rather have the safer, roomier, and more refined compact that'll likely be less problematic over the years.
How come Edmunds never talk about long term reliability of the cars, resale value of both cars. The Civic is so well known for both of those attributes, those are very important things to know for the average consumer!
Rio win in my opinion :)
James says he likes the way the Civic drives better, and what do you do with a car the most? DRIVE IT! Plus the Civic has more substance than stuff. I choose Civic.
I must say, the new civic is very nice looking and a lot better looking than the 2012 ones. Really reliable engine, but only wish it has more power to work with.
I have a 2014 Kia Rio. I drive it like I stole it, because its actually fun as shit to drive with the six speed. Only complaint in 13,500 miles is the shitty paint they put on the car. Chips galore! The 2 peeps in the video, you both drive like baby girls. One other thing, Kia is to cheep to add cruise to the LX. Would have cost them 20.00. I installed my self. Thanks Kia

You can get kits from S Korea on eBay to convert the steering wheel pieces to allow Cruise for like $94. Easy to install according the video tutorials on You Tube. If I buy a new 17 LX, I plan to do this. Is that what you did? Will Blue Tooth work? Do you need a mic?
This wasn't a fair comparison at all. Not the same class. Kia Rio should've been compared to Honda Fit.
people go for kia rio , honestly its awsome

Has the Rio been reliable
Civic's generally bore me....way too common and over rated.
Why not the Kia Forte (instead of the Rio) vs the Honda Civic?

x2 that question!
1988 Honda civic with 290880 and still going!!!
dial out the potential reliability and depreciation problem, focus is the best without a single doubt. civic is the best for family use thought.
It is possible to get a dart with navi for 21k.
I thought the very same thing when I saw the '14 Forte sedan. No, not exactly alike, but VERY similar. View a profile of each car next to each other, and you'll see what we are talking about.
I just bought a 2014 Rio EX - I had looked at the Civic ( this is not a equal comparison- maybe with a Honda fit ) - the 2014 Civic is nice to be sure - but I got the Rio for $5280 less than the Civic - and on my trip back from the dealer I got 5.5 l/100 km highway - that's 42.8 mpg for the US guys....that $5000 + buys a LOT of gas for the next 5 years - and oh yeah - that's when the warranty goes until...

depends on the country...5 in Canada ( considered extreme conditions ) - 7 in the EU and 10 in the US - but they have deductions on warranty costs where we don't....all is covered...
The 18-20k small car/entry market blows my mind, if only because an extra 2k steps you up to things that appeal to me more (e.g. civic SI, fiesta ST when it comes out, plenty of midsize sedans e.g. accord sport)
wifes got an 09 rio I am surprised at how enjoyable it is to drive much more so than the 07 civic I test drove
Do more stuff like this, the videos are more enjoyable, no matter how corny they get :)
OK so who wins?
At the end they should have filled the tank and calculated which got better gas mileage.
THOSE TWO LOOK MORE INTERETED IN EACH OTHER RATHER THAN REVIEWING THEIR CARS...:)
from santa monica to malibu…i see u edmunds lol my hometown
ok, that makes more sense. i have a '03 civic and it's been the best car i've ever owned, BY FAR. incredibly reliable. the american cars i owned before this were horribly unreliable money pits.
The Rio is nice to drive once in a while, but the Civic is the better car to own. I'm no Honda fan, but with proven reliability and much better resale value, you won't want to be stuck with the Rio after 10+ years.
I am a car geek & would consider buying a Hyundai/kia. A Rio and Civic arent in the same class (just price). Reliability? both cars are new and there is no telling what can happen in the long term or whats gonna be recalled. Honda does have the better history which is why competitors have to take new measures and add all of those fancy features and come up with a better value for your buck. You dont remember the last time u folded your mirrors in a tight spot but i bet you would if you could
Honda Civic EX and Kia Rio SX both come out to just under $21k. Definitely a lot of choices. Decently loaded Sonic LTZ, Cruize LT, or Impreza maybe. If someone can put up with a bare bones base model, you can get a Mini Cooper or a Subaru Legacy. I would lean towards a CPO Golf/Jetta TDI or how about something like a CPO TSX or IS250.
Shouldn't it be Honda Civic vs. Kia Forte?
id still take the Civic fully loaded and enjoy its reliability down the road
Focus is the winner apparently and it's not even competing, very awkward but intriguing at the same time lol ;-)
Height adjustable seats are available on the Civic. He's cute, lol!
They compared an entry-level Civic (Forte's size) with a fully-loaded Rio. It isn't the same goal as comparing two C segment cars.
This video should have been called, "Who's more awkward behind the camera?"
Yea, the 13 civic is much improved.. I don't think a Kia can match with reliability, depreciation, fit and finish.. I just got a 13 civic hybrid for my new long commute. I'm surprised it has Bluetooth streaming, pandora, collision detection, lane departure warning, a great interface, backup camera and great materials. And that's considering I'm used to Mercedes, Audi and Porsche
as any auto enthusiast... why the hell would anyone opt for a smaller subcompact car with a dull drive and no power over a compact sedan... i mean the ex-l civic is barely a grand more and gives you heated leather, sat nav, bluetooth, hands free calling, support for iphone GPS and siri commands, etc.
ok guys next time do the civic vs forte I think u'd have an easier time picking the winner
Yea...I understand what the concept of the video was, but I still think it should be Forte V Civic
Yes, It should be Honda Civic versus Kia Forte. It's more than just Logic...maybe Edmunds will conduct a review Honda Civic Versus the Kia Forte or Hyundai Elantra.
used 2011 Mustang GT 5 speed
FOCUS WINS
It would have been fairer to compare Kia Forte vs Civic. The Kia Forte was recently rated as number one by Motortrend, they beat the Civic handily and beat the Mazda 3.
Awesome but why? lol its like saying your 2005 flip phone still works... Cool but why miss out on the new stuff lol
Odd how the Rio, being lighter and having one more gear than the Civic, is not as fuel efficient.
There is so much sexual tension between these two!
I am from Japan and I have to talked to Japanese Mechanics and Drivers around here and they say that Korean Cars nowadays are as better as their Japanese Cars counterparts! Design wise I think Kia is kicking ass now!
I own a 2017 Kia Rio, and had a 2007 Civic SI. I liked them both. That said, I really like driving the six speed manual Rio to work daily. I get 33 mpg combined 50/50 Hwy/city. The Rio cost $10,700 new. The SI cost about $22,000 back in 2007. Is the SI worth twice the money, no. I have a 10yr/100,000 mile power train warranty, and a 5/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty standard. The Kia is really hard to beat.

I might buy the standard base LX Kia Rio sedan this week for $10,500. Did you get a similar end of year deal? I liked how it drove a lot.

djkenny Great price. I have 1,500 miles on my 6 speed manual base model now. I am loving it and look forward to driving it. I have averaged 37 mpg per tank. It seems like a high quality car without all the options. I do wish it had remote locks, and maybe blue tooth. Favorite features is the great 6 speed gear box, duel overhead VVT and direct injected engine. Handling is very good too. Enjoy

djkenny sorry, yes this is year end clearance time. Please watch Kia dealers because mine at Cerritos Kia were not honest. They tried to over charge me on the sales floor. Then the finance guy tried to hide charges and charge me twice($600). Be prepared to leave the dealer. Also, ask to see inventory list of the type of car you want, then You pick the newest vehicle. They sold me a 8/16 Rio as a 2017 vehicle. It technically is, but the car sat a year on the lot. Not the best choice on my part.

It is normal for Kia to label 17's as 16's. I might add remote locks later, from a stereo shop. Likely not. Have you seen the kits on eBay? It is plug in adapters for your steering wheel that allow use of Cruise Control. Not sure how the Blue Tooth would be done? Might need a different head unit or?

He is asking $10,900. I am likely just waiting to buy a base Fiesta. The keyless entry fob and Blue tooth alone, for the same $... and the Hatch... I need to think it over tonight.
Honda!!
I think the Rio should win. The Civic may be more enjoyable to drive, but at $20,000, to have all those features in the Rio is just amazing.
when the guy asked her if she wanted to switch cars i would have said nah i'll keep the civic
why in the hell would you dial out reliability and depreciation issues?! those are huge factors when considering buying a car!
How about the Chrysler 200, about $19,000
My family have 3 cars which are honda, toyota and kia. I like kia for it's price and his dealer's services. We have using the kia for 7 years and it still have no any problem now, so i think kia is reliable.
Doesn't matter, it's about how good the cars are under 20k. A civic under 20k won't be fully loaded but a Kia Rio might be. The Rio starts out at 13.5k vs the 15k of the civic so it's not a big difference anyway.
I think the focus wins
Erin Riches is a very smart person! Just don't quite understand why Edmunds is comparing a compact car with a subcompact car. This doesn't make much sense. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
I want the most stuff too but kia has bad resale value and average reliability.

good thing its got 100k warranty.
I am agree with JillTomson and others. They should have compared 2014 Forte with 2013 Civic! Kia is reliable but I do agree with Kia's resale value is not as strong as Honda. Honda engine tech is failing behind. The Rio has GDI while the Civic does not and the engine dates back to 2006 which Honda has not really change it. Honda you are losing ground to your competition. Besides if its really a toss up between a Rio and a Civic then Honda you know your in trouble with the new Forte in town.
LOOOOOOL cost in Brazil 70K
This is an insane comparison...first of all the Rio vs the Civic?!!?!? The Rio might be compared to the Honda Fit...also KIA VS. HONDA?!?!??! No no no...they do not compare.
let me make this clear: focus is a "better car", but to live with everyday, i would still vote for civic.
the forte kills the civic in my opinion. But the honda nameplate catches alot of ppl
Wait for the all new toyota Corolla Altis
No, thats a Kia Rio Sedan ;)
Shouldn't this comparison have been with the forte. Anyway love me some Honda
Kia or Honda? $20k? I'll take an E46 M3 thank you very much.
Kia Rio for sure.
I like Honda, too bad they dont have a vehicle to compete with the 2014 Kia Cadenza
These cars are appliances
Here is what's better than a Civic: every other C segment car from a major manufacturer. The Civic was great 10 years ago but now it's almost irrelevant.
Civic all day.
Your comparing apple to oranges if you need to compare the civic to any car it will be the kia forte, but the kia rio did a great good standing up to a car greater than its class.
wow wow wow, they are not in the same segment. 2014 Kia Forte vs 2013 Honda Civic sounds more reasonable.
* in front of the camera
Civic. Definitely Civic.
Chevy Sonic RS
Ehhh, the Honda 5 speed shouldn't have been on her "pros" list. The Kia definitely looks better, and I agree about its more "grown up" instrument cluster.
My vote is the Kia!
Kia Rio rocks!!!
I will say, Honda styling is awefull. It hasnt changed since the early 90's. Kia/Hyundai have come along way. I highly doubt the hyundai/kia is as refined as a Toyota, or Honda tough. IT's hard to choose over a Toyota or Honda if all you look at is reliability and longevity. Toyota's 1/8 and 1.5 liter cylinders are so solid. I will say for under 20k the Elantra is probably the nicest looking car. It's actually the nicest looking car I have seen in a long time. can hyundai hit 250,000?
The Rio is definitely the winner in my opinion.
Rio
I would say the civic has the better value compare to the rio
The KIA is a winner for me. HONDA is just a Honda, seriously. But I recently bought a SONATA.
he forte would have honestly destroyed the civic. It has a more powerful engine, better equipped and looks better for that price.
Honda makes awesome cars but their interior needs to be upgraded seriously, it's way too outdated.
Honds better resale value
Are these two going to marry each other? They seem like a right fit for each other.
Honda any day over any Kia. Bottom line, when you want to sell/trade in your car, you won't get raped in resale value with the a Honda, unlike a Kia.
Honda Civic. Because Honda will retain its value longer than Kia and also Honda does have a reliable history.
I was impressed with the Rio when I test drove one. I own a Civic now. . .
Kia wins in my opinion, but I would have went with Ford.
Not even the same segment! the direct competition is Honda Civic vrs Kia Cerato/Forte.. daaa Kia RIO its competition for Honda City!!! learn more about segments and cars
The Rio is more humble than the civic.
Kia's reliability and quality is comparable to the Honda. The Kia is a better value and just as enjoyable to drive with better fuel economy and power. The Kia wins!
They look very awkward on camera.
Toyota completely stole the Rio's design for the new Corolla!
Lots of featers in the Kia product...unfortunatly if your engine dies those features wont do you much good. GO HONDA!
It really doesn't speak well of Edmunds that they're paying people to produce junk pieces like this.
for 20k ... VW golf ... it's A NO BRAINER !!
