Honda CB500X vs Honda CRF300L Rally (From a Guy Who Owns Both)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Many people find themselves at a crossroads when trying to decide on the best beginner ADV bike. Honda makes a ton of great entry-level ADV motorcycles, and the competition of Honda CB500x vs Honda CRF300L Rally can be a tough one to suss out, particularly if you haven't ridden or owned either a Honda CRF300L Rally or a Honda CB500X yourself.
Fortunately, I've owned and ridden both of these great beginner adventure motorcycles and I'm here to help you with the CRF300L Rally vs CB500X decision. These two great beginner dual sport motorcycles do a lot of the same things, but there are some pretty significant differences when you compare 500x vs 300L and in this video I'll walk you through all the pros and cons of each bike and hopefully help you decide whether you want to add a Honda CB500 X or Honda CRF 300 L Rally to your stable.

I don't see anything replacing either of them in the near future. The low maintenance and Honda reliability are key to their appeal for me. Uuuuh, thank you !

At 51 years young, the Rally is by far the most fun bike I’ve ever owned! Maybe with the exception of my Elsinore 50 that my dad bought for me when I was just 9 years old. I’ve experienced lots of Hondaness growing up.

I returned to riding two years ago. Wanted to go with the Rally, but could not find one and ended up buying a CB500X and a CRF300L. Now I can confirm everything you said. Both bikes are very friendly, easy to ride, no headaches of any kind. My advice to everybody considering these Hondas would be to have them both. 😁 However, if you must pick only one, let me state the obvious, it is all about road vs. off-road and forget about anything else.If you are mainly on paved roads, and I mean like 80/20, go with CB500X and don't look back.. It is far superior, the engine has almost double the power, front brakes are way better, it is smooth, it is more comfortable, etc.. Simply, CB500X is a lot more of a motorcycle then CRF300L but only slightly more expensive. Otherwise, pick 300L because it is like 125 pounds lighter and weight matters when going off-road.

This is a solid comparison, the 50/51 rule is a solid way to make a selection. I know I said I was working on a WR450, but I ended up getting a Triumph Tiger 1050. Figuring I'll be on pavement way more than dirt I elected to go that route. We went up to Detroit Lake, then looped back through Brittenbush into Estacada. Was hot as balls but a very epic loop.

I am an old guy so I can share some old guy thoughts: Get both ;-) I am fortunate to be have a couple of bikes. It is mostly because road touring and off-pavement are different enough during long duration rides or events that they each have a sweet spot. I have a R1250GSA for the 5-9 day mostly road and fire trail trips. I have an 890 Adventure (S for street and short) for more mixed terrain long distance activities. I have a CRF300LS (for short folks) when I will be mostly off-pavement and have a good chance of needing to be able to be able to pickup the bike. I told you that it was an old guy comment ;-) Great video

I have a 300 Rally and just got back from a trip from Denver CO to Phoenix CO and back. Hit the MOAB UT section of the BDR and on the way back hit Mexican hat and the Valley of the Gods. With the longest amount of Highway driving lasting 8 hours not accounting for traffic in one day. There was times where you really wished you could stay at a constant 80 mph up hills and dealing with some UT highways having 80Mph speed limits, But Ultimately didn't matter that much. There were plenty of cars and trucks that where going 70-75Mph or slower that I never was worried that I was going too slow. I could for the most part keep up and go faster than traffic. Things to keep in mind though is that I have the 550 performance ECU tune. I cant speak on how much that helps because I got the bike used with the tune already installed from an older gentlemen that never took the bike on the highway so he didn't know if it helped much either. I love the bike I feel confident I can take it anywhere in the CO mountains. A rear suspension upgrade is defiantly worth it, I changed out the stock for a Ohlins rear Shock and the ride completely changed.

That being said, it is my first motorcycle, I started riding with this bike so I'm as fresh as they come. The CB500X has almost never limited what I was trying to do with, I been on a road trip with it and was comfortable most of the way (had to stand every now and then to get some wind in the sail), I've taken it off road several times as well and the only time I had to turn back was when I was pushing MYSELF further than what I was ready for (some steep quad trail with dinosaur egg sized rocks come to mind). It's capable and it's a lot of fun :P

I ride a 2022 CRF300 Rally and I love it. Just a fun bike to ride on and off road. Especially off road, its natural habitat. I did the MABDR this summer from Montréal and back, around 4000 miles. Had a blast with it. Nothing stops this machine. Great on the trails and super fun on pavement with twisties. Also kept up with traffic on highways and it was more comfortable than I expected to be. Fully pact with my camping gear, I really enjoyed my trip. What an adventure! I plan to reach Colorado in the summer of 2024 and do the COBDR. The maintenance intervals is what sold me. 8000 miles between oil changes. I could go from Montréal to Colorado and back and than some, without an oil change. That's awesome! Your prior videos on the Rally helped me choose this great bike. Thank you Ben!

Before I have to upgrade to Ohlins, etc. What if anything have you done to the x to help highway manners in particular. With a small amount of luggage (haven't maxed the bike out) my front wheel feels like it's off the ground at highway speeds around traffic. Very very light feel overall at speed. Love the content. If you can not make up your mind between the two, get the KTM 390 Adventure, Much better off road than the BC500X and much better on the highway than the CRF300 Rally. Had all three and all are great bikes. I did find the CRF300 L a bit to tall for me, when trying to get on and off on uneven ground. Now riding the CB500X and the Honda Trail125. and most of the time for short rids under 100 km I will take the Trail125 a great utility bike can carry a lot of weight on the rear rack That is one thing I do not like about the CB500X is the weight capacity on the rear rack is way to low. All heavy loads have to go in the side boxes. I did have the CRF 300L and found the gas tank was way to small, ( come on Honda were do you find gas out on the trail???) Looking forward to the CRF300 LS coming to Canada but hopping they will also come with the same gas tank as the Rally dose.

Not often I’ll chime in to a bike review but I feel strongly about this one. I’m 5’9” tall and average build. I’m currently selling my 500x because in my opinion it is terrible on the highway compared to the 300 rally. At 70mph it feels like I’m hurting the engine and the vibrations are tiring. The seat and pegs position is very wrong! Never known a more painful seat. The extra weight is helpful on windy days and the little bit more power is nice but in every other way the 300 rally wins on and off road for me.

  • @NorthwoodsNomad

I really wish I could afford both , it’s always nice to have options. I can’t even find a dealer around here that has either one in the showroom to even swing a leg over it . However there is a Kawasaki KLX300 available and so I am thinking about buying it. IDK 🤷‍♂️ I like the Honda brand though and the CRF300L seems to have some better features than the KLX300 ( buttery smooth transmission, slipper clutch, ABS ) but the KLX has a better suspension from what I’ve been hearing. The CRF300L is around $800 cheaper , so that money could be used to upgrade the fork springs and rear suspension and accessorize the bike to make it even better than the KLX . And lastly as you stated, there’s much better aftermarket support for the Honda and that’s a huge plus for most folks who take pride in ownership and like to customize their bikes. Just trying to weigh in my options and looking for feedback . Thanks for the great content here . Edit : and the Honda has a better instrumentation panel than the Kawasaki

As a teenager in the mid to late 80s I had a CR 250, then a CR 500. I think back then they only came as two-strokes, certainly both mine were. Both were awesome, but I have especially good memories of fanging it through the forestry trails next to our farm on that 500 like I'd stolen it, holding on for dear life and doing crazy stuff like only a bullet-proof 17 year old male thinks they can get away with. I didn't end up dead, so I guess I was at least partially right. To me, calling a CR "friendly" just doesn't compute. Mine were motorcross and enduro slaying beasts! I know, I'm stuck in a "good old days" two-stroke big-bore 80s time-warp, but it kinda saddens me to see the CR tamed like it is in this modern version. I've been away from off road bikes for a long time - do they still make a two-stroke CR? Are they still beasts?

That's because I don't do highway and everything for me is close by. But I can't imagine taking the 500x on any kind of real trails, from my experience with it it's way too low to the ground and needs different tires obviously. Great road bike but I'd rather have something different for just on road, so I'm trying to sell it.

But now I discovered motorcycle camping is what I like most and a Rebel is not very comfortable offroad. The 500x can be made much more offroad capable and still be highway capable. The 300L will always suffer on highway due to lack of power. The only better ADV bike for me above a Rally Raided 500x may be the Tuareg 660. ;).

    8 ай бұрын

I have a CB500X 2020 and have ridden v-stroms 650 a couple of times (1st gen 2005 and 3rd gen 2017 models). The v-strom is more powerful, definitely better on the highway and vibrates less. Suzuki's latest 650 engine is the best engine I've ever tried in my life! But the CB is also pretty comfortable up to 120 km/h. The riding position is more upright on the CB, while the v-strom feels more like a sport-tourer. The CB feels much lighter (17 kg lighter and has much lower center of gravity), more fun to ride on the backroads (subjective) and I do take mine off-road after I've done the suspension upgrade on it (Hyperpro - the same travel but progressive, stiffer and better damping).

If you want comfort a smoothness of twin cylinder combined with off-road capabilities of dual sport bikes like CRF300LR, then CB500X is NOT the way to go even for beginner. There are bikes that are good at both. Aprilia Tuareg 660, KTM 790 Adv-R, a bit tall Yamaha Tenere 700, and some other. However, each of these good bikes costs twice as CRF300L. On the other side, these bikes are ready from factory, while you have to pour money on CRF300L to get good suspension, seat, durable hand guards, skid plate... so it's not that cheap in the end.
