Test | Honda CRF 300 Rally bike build finished!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We finally test our Honda CRF 300 Rally build with a decent adventure that mixes it with much bigger bikes. The results confirmed what we always thought, this little bike is an adventure slayer, but did we mention the budget? It was blown to pieces along the way. But don't despair there is a cheaper solution.
In this final episode of the Honda CRF300 Rally bike build, Dave Darcy, Shooter/Producer of Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV and Editor at Large of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine and Andrew Clubb, Editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine, take their newly built 'Red Rooster' on a decent motorcycle adventure to see how it stacks up against the much bigger competition.
A huge thanks to the listed sponsors that provided the parts free of charge.

Every time I have another ride on my “keeper” 2012 WR250R, which is really well set up for adventure riding, I am immediately reminded how effective a light frame and small motor can be. They are seriously fast, especially on the rough and slippery terrain we ride on here on the Eastern seaboard. I love my equally well set up T7, but the grin factor is with the 250. Thanks Dave and Clubby for your job well done.

Great video guys! FINALLY got mine a few months ago, really even better than expected right out of the box. 100% spot on about the bar risers and exhaust, but I must say the 87stock improved ECU was well worth it. Not a huge difference in power, but noticeable. Biggest difference was it is so much better down low and no more on/off twitch in the throttle. Putting my nickels up for the suspension, WAY too soft for me at @220 with gear plus camp gear. Definitely still well worth the price, I can’t imagine ever needing more bike for my style of riding. Stay safe!

You made the right choice not to change anything with the motor and electronics IMO. I have received numerous suggestions for what I should of done while upgrading another big KZreadrs CRF300 Rally that just weren’t necessary nor wanted by the owner, including suggestions for cam swaps, ECU changes, clutch swap etc. She already has a tough time finding replacement wear parts! Honda built a surprisingly good bike for the price, but had to make compromises to accomplish that knowing most people wouldn’t put their bike to the test very often or for any length of time. For those that do, the upgrades that you have done are highly recommended! Not cheap, but we’ll worth the investment.

I fell in love with the 300L before I bought it (grew up on honda bikes), in part from this channel's initial review. After I got one, I never modded the suspension, and felt in that stock state, and my weight at 185lbs, the bike was dangerous on the ohv trails in Western US states. Heavy and sluggish to respond. I eventually bought a ktm 500 (22) and never looked back. I know..$$$, still if you got the $$$, try the ktm 500 instead. I love the 300L, especially how it looks, and wanted to love it but I got a fever when I ripped that ktm 500 during a single 30 min test ride. I'm an adventure rider who likes to ride single track on sketchy trails for context. 300L is a great bike with the suspension, but still nothing near the new KTM or 501 in terms of nimbleness on the more technical off road terrain.

I have a 300 rally with Ktech front and rear a FMF pipe. It does everything so well. I was out today with a few T7s a 690 and a 701. On the dirt in mid WalesI think I had the easier time, on the tar it'll hold 65-70. A bit more grunt would be nice but in the first four gears it's plenty. The throttle cbr body mod looks effective and pretty cheap. I'm off to Morocco on mine in September so a change of air filter will be needed , the twin air is favourite for that.

They can’t think they limiting the CRF300L will boost Africa Twin sales since they at other ends of the ADV spectrum. Still for long distance rides prefer my ktm640 adv. As can carry more items and fuel range about the same. On weight, the atmosphere about 15 kg heavier but that I clouds rally plate with tools inside and panniers racks for soft bags. On 40 km trip use water proof soft bags only and camped most of time. As stayed mostly to central and western Australia. Also did Cape York two times over years. I did keep Kim in Australia at time. Now married with children. Little time to solo trips nowadays.

Great job on the build. Possibly the best price-performance you can do with off-road focused ADV build. And the Husky 501 will probably be the best expensive off-road focused ADV build, so it's a really nice followup. If possible, it would be nice to get direct comparison between the two. How much more you get for 2-3 times the cost, but the 300 might be gone by then.

Spending AU$3500 on this bike is simply not a problem because the ONLY competition is the KTM690 (and variants), and you can't actually buy a new one for under AU$19000, but then you still have an unreliable high maintenance princess! I just rode 5500km across Australia with my son on a Rally and a Standard without a single issue. The only time I missed my Africa Twin was with 40km/h head winds, but we just slowed down to 90. That slight inconvenience was vastly insignificant to the huge advantages of heading off on unknown trails and beach tracks knowing that whatever you came across could probably be ridden or in the worst case, you could turn the little bike around on the track and head back! This bike has a modern high revving engine (it is NOT a thumper) and needs to be ridden as such, once you get that into your head it is a cracker!

More power through the whole rev range and sits on 120km no worries. Bike runs alot smoother overall. Wasn't too hard of a job either. Still gotta check if I've lost the low end. Will head out to a local hill climb this weekend to check. Update: Still tractors up hills no worries. Maybe a loss in some bottom end with the sprocket change but the extra umph makes up for it. Did you guys change anything to the ecu mapping ? All modern bikes suffer a bit from lean running engines, adding a bit more fuel removes a bit of low end vibration and adds some smoothness. It actually made my ktm 390 run a lot nicer, fuel consumption doesn't really change a lot. By the way, to be able to setup the bikes sag correctly when you add luggage or any other weight, the hydraulic preload adjuster was a great add on. The spring rates + the needed preload set the sag of the bike, using the correct sag means the bikes geometry is as it's designed. The bike will ride at it's best with the correct sag settings. 10kg more or less, especially at the level of the rear fender will change how it steers without correcting the sag. Lovely bike by the way, the red rooster, you don't need a lot more than a bike like this to have fun.

Not sure what the tradeoffs are there but I do know I want a smaller lighter weight bike to do the types of things I mentioned. I'll take other bike suggestions here as I need a handful to test ride when I start shopping here in coming months. Wanted the Rally but ended up buying the 300L due to reduced lead time. Ordered Jan 22, arrived April 22 whereas the Rally was 12 month wait. Adding an Adventure Spec screen with Garmin Zumo XT and 14L tank (coming Feb 23), we essentially get a slightly cheaper Rally without the body armour and bit lighter. A compromise to be sure but 12m plus lead times for the Rally are common everywhere.

If Honda does come with an S model, they should also come with a sport model. With the suspension of the motocross bikes. top noch SHOWA suspension, with all the tuning options.front and rear.Tuned for aggressive riding. Even track riding. That we don't have to go, even to the tuner. At most, change springs according to the rider's weight. Just like Honda sells the CRF450R, in two versions. The Regularl and the more equipped one.

Hi Dave, thanks for an amazing series, I really enjoyed it. I have a question. I'm casually looking for replacement of my XT660r. I really like the red rooster, but where I live(Czech rep.) you can by it new for 10k aus. dollars. With moding the suspension, bash plate, luggage carier and few other mods it'll be somewhere around 12-14k. And for that I can buy used 2020 Husky 701(with 15 000km). Is there in your opinion some reason to pick the Rooster instead? Apart from the fact the Honda could be new and simplier bike. Thanks mate.

Just wondering about ABS and how it works on the front. Also wondering if ANS is an option on the Rally like it is on the L version.
