What a brilliant review. At 61 years old and having raced motocross and 1000cc sports bikes, you eventually realise that whilst all that is great, it’s getting out in all weathers, around Macc Forest and other brilliant places that’s really where it’s at.. 500cc is more than enough if we were all honest with ourselves. I recently bought a Honda Monkey 125 and can’t remember having so much fun around the local lanes on a bike.......Stay safe mate and enjoy!

Wow thank you! Perhaps we get older and wiser, or just a bit more careful. I prefer my bike as light as possible, but with plenty of fun. I think the CB500x is one of those bikes which will last the course. And great value too 👍

I’ve got one as a second bike (to my T120). It’s safe, light, flickable and slipper clutch is easy peasy. I’m late 60s too and this bike is easy to move around and about 47 kilos lighter than my T120. Mine has heater grips. I’m adding a top box and centre stand for its practical tasks.

Splendid review! I've been dreaming of seeing the countryside of Wales from a motorcycle -- beautiful (the hedge rows could be a bit shorter though). You certainly answered the "is it too buzzy" question by riding on the motorway at 55 MPH in 3rd gear. And it was so nice to see a review where there was no zero to 60 test - brilliant! Given your appreciation of the 750 how about a review of the NC750X? Thanks much!

Very nice, honest & complete review; congrats. Wow: Great upgrades on the CB500X 2019; i love it; Great Job Honda; i’m really tempted to upgrade my CB500X 2017; Honda: now please create a new version : a CB500X Adventure Sports ((kind of Rally Raid version; small Africa Twin; spokes wheels, inverted front forks, skid plate, hand guards, rear suspension with adjustable remote, engine guards, dual front brake discs, ABS switch on/off...)) & i will buy it to swap my CB500X 2017 for a CB500X Adventure Sports 2020. Or, let’s dream, i would also upgrade for a future new CB650X or for a smaller Africa Twin 700cc (my 2 dream bikes). By the way : CB500X are not only for new riders; i know a lot of experimented riders who ride CB500X (unbeatable value for the money). In future, i will maybe end by buying another CB500X 😘. Lets keep in mind that we can get 4 CB500X 2019 for the price of only one BMW F1250GS. CB500X are awesome, fun, reliable, light, versatile, nimble... bike for the streets, for twisty roads & for light off roads (dirt roads) without needing to brake the bank! Its not only for new riders; a lot of experimented riders also love it. You can commute & travel with it; no problem.

Great review, I'm a new subscriber on the back of this. I will put my 2p in on the 'range gap'. A CRF750L would be massive over here, I agree with that, but we are a very small market. I'm sure the studies will have been done on a global scale. They're not going to develop that bike because they will sell 1000 in the UK. They sold less than 20000 bikes in total here last year. 19.5 million globally. If you think on a global level, they did fill the range gap... With the Honda Cub 125.

Good review. I am buying one of these to ride from Uk to Mongolia and back. Money saved over 790ad/700 Tenere pays for the trip. RRaid baseplate and wheels give it enough off road for me (mostly dirt roads). Are you really going to ride at 60mph off road in the middle of nowhere on your own? I travel to see the countryside not to race. The CB has to be the best travel bike out there - lots of cheap upgrades, great reliability, comfort, fuel economy. Still too many KTM reliability problems on the travel forums for me, for long distance travel (oil leaks on the 790adv already?) If only the CB sounded as good as the KTM! Cheers

dont get me wrong I really like the cb500x (considering it for myself) but the Yammy Tenere 700 is yours now for 8300 gbp. With bashplate, spoked wheels and serious suspension standard. If you have to add the Rally raid goodies, and I do like those too, to the cb500x then the price difference gets really small imo. Finding the Others Well you pay your money and take your choice. Not that the Tenere is out yet. I have seen that review and it is by far the best one so far. Personally 880mm seat height and top heaviness too much for me. I chose the 790 Adv as it has lower seat and low centre of gravity. But at half the price of the 790 I still think the CB500x is a bargain and still nearly £2500 less than the T700 (which I really like by the way, I have been waiting for it forever. Disappointed by its final configuration for me, for other people [taller] it will be great). 👍

Well it’s just my experience for what it is worth. DCT works brilliantly. But I felt it deskilled me, in a way I cannot explain, so I would never have another DCT unless injury forced it. You never stall. You can blast away from traffic with impunity. Yet still I would not have another. I loved the AT. Every ride was an event. But it was top heavy. When it fell I could not pick it up. With a full tank of fuel it liked to fall over. Above 3 mph hour it was wonderful. I loved it, but in the end I found I would avoid going out on it as it was too much trouble to get out and put away, and I did not feel at ease when stopped. If you are six foot plus and healthy, they are terrific. Just not for me these days. I hope that helps. It’s just how it was for me. Reliability was/is excellent. 👍

Just comparing the roads to NZ, I find those roads you're on scary as heck. The hedges are right up against the road and very high, you can't see what's coming round the corner nor is there anywhere to go if you had to evade someone on the wrong side of the road! People coming out of their driveways as well! How many accidents happen on these roads?

  • @CodgerBiker

It's kind of a case of what you are used to. I grew up in Lincolnshire which (though flatter) is very much like this. You keep your speed down and move to look through the corner where possible. Speed is the killer here. I know, I lost a friend early on in my motorcycling days. Also the camera does make things look a bit narrower than it is. 👍

Hi Chris. First up, it's a great bike, easily 3/4 as good for 1/2 price. Needs heated grips and a bit of 'Rally Raid' but it would be fine indeed once sorted. I am a BIG Honda fan too, I hope that came across. Second up, my KTM is very much high maintenance. Far more than this bike would ever be. And after my 790 Adv I am going to be looking for a 500cc twin. But would I go back and change; have several thousand pounds to mod the CB500x just so, and money in the bank even after that was done? My head says, 'of course'. But, when I open the throttle on the 790Adv, my heart, guts, and all emotions say otherwise - it's just a blast!!! Maybe not the sensible option, but I honestly have no regrets. Next year will be the follow-up: CB4x (if it appears), CB500x, or 490Adv... Now that will be interesting 😉 Thanks for watching/commenting 👍👍👍

It also alarmed me when it went over on side stand, but that is just a Honda Adv thing you'd get used to. I noticed Missenden Flyer having same surprise with the new Africa Twin 1st impression. Test ride I say! Check for low seat option too, they might throw one in. They are offering money off some bikes just now as part of getting to work Covid deal I think. Even though it gives fantstic MPG i would swap that MPG for say 55-60 HP instead of the 47-49 Honda CLAIMS, Now dont get me wrong here it is the most comfortable bike i have EVER ridden and i have had many bikes in many shapes and sizes but it just does;nt give me a buzz so i was hoping i could put a powercommander ,change the full exhaust put an opened up airbox probably the dna airfilter but I WAS WRONG, For some reason i have been told by both RallyRaid and Honda dealer the HP IS THE HP and thats that. If anyone knows different please leave a comment as i love the Honda build Quality and its a light go anywhere bike and for little over a tenner i can go at least 200 miles so my ONLY peev is the HP that said great bike SCOOBS UK.

Yes I agree. A very smooth bike. Nice quality. Yet when I got back on my 790 Adv the double HP was quite noticeable. That being said I still think the bike is fantastic for the price. 👍

That’s my point about Honda’s ‘adventure’ line-up - it’s odd. But you can have an adventure on any bike I suppose. However they don’t really fit the generally accepted idea of an adventure bike. I’d call them tourers. Just my opinion, no more valid than anyone else’s. I think the CB500x is an adventure bike, albeit a less than hardcore one.

Yes I realise that, but you would not get 95 miles to a US gallon, under normal circumstances. I've always found my Hondas to be really economical too - dependent on how I ride 👍 I’m always surprised by the low range US reviewers assign to bikes, then remember how much smaller their gallon is. A ten gallon hat would only be a seven gallon hat over here 😂

Here in the States I would just get the NC750x even better balanced than the 500. Only $8,000. USD for the 750x here and $6,500 for the 500x, no thanks. They can both run a campground dirt road the same.

Agree the NC750x is very good. Though a bit heavier. But very capable all the same. I set a 200kg kerb weight for a 750 - which is why I bought the 790 Adv in the end, but I was tempted by the NC having ridden one.
