As an official old guy, I can no longer just kick a leg over the bike when mounting/dismounting. Big Rock Moto has pointed this out in a video, I put my left foot on the left peg (kick stand down) and then up and over. I've been told by others that they would never trust the stand, but what am I to do? Give up riding? Adding a top box will require a more thoughtful mount :)

Been doing that kind of mount/dismount for two years now on a DR650 with no mechanical problems. I just give it attention with grease periodically.

Otto, a friend of mine has the same issue as you so he needs to use the foot peg to mount. He is also concerned with the added pressure on the kick stand, so he always mounts from the RIGHT side which removes most of the added weight from the stand. Been doing it for years. I've tried it and it feels weird, but you do what you need to do.

  • @stevendewolfe4592

I also use the foot peg to mount and try to put my weight over the bike while doing it to minimize the force on the stand. Also, the position of the front wheel adjusts the bike’s stance before mounting.

As a short rider in the 50+ category and an inseam of less than 30 inches I stand on the footpeg to mount the Africa Twin, even loaded I trust the kickstand enough to do a kickstand pivot/turn.

  • @Loiczzr

    @Loiczzr

I pivot turn my bike on the kick stand (kawasaki versys 650 and suzuki drz400s) with no issues. So unless your bike is known for a very weak stand/bracket then your weight won't be enough to break it.

I love your enthusiasm for the Africa Twin. You sound just like me talking about it. I think all of my riding friends are sick of me talking about mine! I have a 2017 DCT that I wouldn't trade for anything. I think the DCT lets you concentrate on other things that allow you to really reduce the amount of fatigue you'd normally experience with a traditional manual transmission. Plus, the DCT is much quicker from a dead stop than pretty much any other bike I can think of. I ride off road as much as possible, and your comparison with a Rekluse clutch is spot on. You will never stall a DCT in a tricky situation off road. It can and will save you from dumb mistakes on and off road. Great video Amanda!

After I said that I had to check it out. NO, the bike electronics will not allow you to shift into neutral when you are moving. You must be stopped. You would think after riding the bike for 14,000 miles I would know but I guess I never tried it. I still think the Africa Twin is one of the best sounding motorcycles. You don't need to rev in a tunnel, it already sounds sweet.

Regarding cold weather riding, I've really been a wuss this winter so far, but I did go for a New Year's Day ride up to that viewpoint west of Crown Point. I wore the right gear and I felt fine, but when I got home I ate three bowls of hot soup and slept for three hours. 😁 Best of luck in everything!

Have to agree about the seat, it's a block of wood after a few hours. I had a lambs wool cover made for mine and now its like a mobile sofa. DCT is definitely a learning curve and I spend most of my time in manual mode, particularly off road and still find myself instinctually grabbing for the clutch sometimes but dragging the rear is a workable solution. I've taken it to a lot of places that many owners may not, like rocky single track and sand dunes and it's has performed OK but you can certainly feel the weight in these conditions. At the end of the day it's a true Swiss Army knife and I love it.

I think this is the best, most complete and concise bike test video I've ever seen of any bike, ever, on a very complex bike at that! Don't worry about brake pads, they're cheaper and easier to change than clutch plates, and it's all just friction material. It looks like you modified the parking brake lever for use while riding, as did I. I'm jealous of both your high kicks and your apparent ability to empty a six gallon tank before emptying your bladder.

21000km on my 2020ATASes DCT and love it! Love it! Never expected to enjoy an 1100cc scooter so much. Dirt biker for life, manual muscle car owner, mountain sledded for decades, and truly enjoy this bike so much. Three of us have DCT Africa twins. Two are Baja racers! We multi-week tour sometimes with Pillions. Awesome bike for most everything but very tight single track. Only issue I had was tank magnesium weld flake, that I resolved with Guglatech Mazinga filter kit, to maintain fuel pump reliability. Cheers Magpie, from Canada 🇨🇦 :-)

Love the review. The one thing that I really really could relate to. I had a bunch of bikes in the past 8 years when I got back into riding. Started with. Honda 250 L then a Husky 449 to adventure bikes with an KLR. I then upgraded to a 2015 BMW 800 GS. That was a great bike. From there I went to my 2017 AT. The biggest difference from the BMW to the AT was after 300 plus miles I was not as tired riding the AT as I was on the GS. They felt the same on the dirt but on the highway the AT was soooo much better

After watching this video I'm extremely impressed with the Twin, enough so to where I'm going to look into DCT because I am getting older and it's all about do what you can while you still can. Thanks for the 10,000 mile experience deep dive review it speaks massive volumes about the twin given the fact you road that far on a 2022 seven months ago. That is impressive.

Been looking forward to this video review all year, and you did not disappoint 😄 a great thorough, full on and honest review that covers just about everything realistically important about the bike! Fingers crossed Honda let’s you keep the bike… the question is did you end up giving the bike a name over the year ? 😅

I've been very good at not giving it a proper name because I'm scared of how heart broken I would be when giving it back. (Who am I kidding I WILL be heartbroken if I have to give it back) BUT I did start referring to it affectionately as my Mama Cheetah 🤣🤣 just between Gary and I

Thanks for a good review. I’m also Honda fan, even working for them in the 90s. In 2018 I went shopping for at AT and came home with a BMW R1200GS because back then the AT didn’t have cruise, something my arthritic right hand needs on long trips. Maybe next time. Thanks again.

Amazing and calmed down honest review!!, and when it comes to all the tech stuff I would think you nailed it to the point everyone could follow. It was really cool to see that comparison between the different models, I got some new info there displayed very nice. Thx. I have the excact same bike as you just some different patterens in the stickers since mine is a 2020 ATAS ES DCT. Also your take on DCT was perfect and great for people who fear giving it a chance. I personally think Honda should let you keep this bike, the gain they have in having such a charismatic person like you giving this cool review, is worth a few ATAS's I would say. Rock on. Thanks for this review, I'm right about you with 11.000 miles since I got as new in August 2021. But thats 1.5 years ago not 4 months!!! damn. :) Dan, from Copenhagen, Denmark.

This was simply fabulous. Probably my most favorite Africa twin review / analysis / opinion video. And I've been seeing so many of late. However.. This one convinced me to book a test ride.. And by the looks and sound of it.. I think I am gonna end up buying the honda africa twin over the Bmw gs1250. Also.. The flow and presentation of data was so easy flowing thay I am now also a subscriber.. Can't wait to binge watch over the wkened.. And thank you for being you.

I have a 22 ATAS ES DCT as well and just love the bike. I only got to put about 600 miles on it before the snow hit South Dakota....Waiting for it to melt on the roads and I'll be back riding it. I agree with everything you said. It is a fantastic bike and I look forward to all of your adventures on it...I think you'll have to buy one but maybe Honda will just let you have it:)

Thanks for your review and extreme test of the AT. You made it look easy. I’m deciding between my AT and my Goldwing. The AT surprisingly is a better seating position, even though like you I can’t flat foot it. It’s way lighter than the Goldwing though.

Hi Amanda from Quebec City! I have exchanged my CB500X 2015 last Friday to a demo AT Adventure DCT 2021. It’s amazing how this thing rides well on road. I’m planning to do a visit to the Baie de James (Hudson Bay area) this summer. This will be a 2000 miles drive over paved and unpaved roads. Thanks for sharing all your opinions over the bike you got last summer. I wish you an AT as soon as you can! 😊

I have been reviewing a lot of reviews on the African Twin sports for a few weeks now, and this was the most imformative. My conclusion for my application is for a standard transmission for a lot of slow speed maneuvers in off road conditions,

You could always get down on your knees and plead with Honda to gift the Twin, after all that was so close to a plead with the camera zoom during the video. I hope you get to keep the Twin, and bring it to Get On Fest again this year. You deserve to have the bike with your devotion to it. Thanks for getting me into camping and helping me select gear. See ya at Sturgis❗️❗️

Great review Amanda! Your impressions are pretty much the same as mine even though mine is a couple years older. I wouldn't have chosen a DCT but I found a great deal on one in the used market and after just a few days riding, was totally comfortable. After a month, I've of the mind it's brilliant. Like you, I put it in S2 and it matches how I'd ride most of the time. The shifter paddles are used when I want a shift at a slight different time than DCT thinks is appropriate. Long distance, again spot on. Seat is kinda hard but I just stand more, even on asphalt. I'm a Seat Concepts fan boy for my dirt bikes, have them on all of them. Tried one on my V-Strom and was disappointed so I'm unlikely to try one on the AT. I hear the newer 1100 are much better than my 1000 but I don't think the difference is worth changing bikes for me. The extra fuel would be nice on long trips but I just stick a RotoPak on and that gives me the security I need to push the stock fuel tank a bit farther. Thanks for continuing the great content and hope your dreams of owning an AT come true at some point.... I'm already registered for RMR next year so I'll see you then!

I added the factory low seat to my ‘21 Africa Twin. Mine is the base model with manual transmission. I’m about 5’6” with a 28” inseam, so I needed the lower seat just to get the balls of my feet down. I mount my bike using the footpeg and stepping over. It’s not that big of a deal, as that is how I mount most of the bikes I have ever had. Short people problems. I knew you would love the AT. I absolutely love mine. I hope you end up getting it for yourself 😎

Glad to read this from a fellow shorty! I absolutely refuse to allow my stature to stop me owning the motorcycle I want. Just accept the higher chance of a stationary drop with a slip or foot in a hole scenario. Big deal. 👍

I have the 2022 H. Africa Twin ES DCT and absolutely love it! The performance of this bike is just totally amazing. I am 6ft 1 with back problems but when I'm riding this bike, I'm not bend over but sitting upright in a comfortable position. And yes, I do agree that sometimes my android gets knock so I would have to stop and reprogram it but other than that this bike runs like a champion especially on the Hwys and long distances. I added a comfortable gel seat cushion for comfortability, and it works great. Overall, I could not imagine riding any other bike but my A.T. period.

5'9" here, And I can echo your statement completely. I ride a 2018 At DCT. The ergos are perfect, the ride just plush enough to absorb most of the ruts, dips and objects on the road. My bad back (new 2 discs in L4 and L5) rarely has a complaint about the ride.
