Homemade Prius Trailer Hitch Snow Plow - DIY - Snowplow
February 12th 2019 the Twin Cities received over 6" of accumulation
Hey guys,
This is my plow. You can find lots of homemade plows on the net. This has some features that are unique.
1. The plow mounts to any trailer hitch ball. I have not seen any other plows do this. It allows the plow to float and conform to any terrain.
2. The chains keep the plow from just kicking sideways. One chain is always under tension and the other slack. By adjusting the length of the chains the plow can be set to kick the snow sideways.
3. The plow has safety tip springs. A 4X4 is bolted into the trailer hitch couple. This 4X4 attaches and pivots on one 5/8" bolt to the plow blade. The two black bands are metal springs. The safety tip and floating allow the plow to ride over curbs and such with out breaking. All commercial plows have this safety tip feature. Without it it's easy to break things.
4. The plow blade is four 2X4's. That's enough for my needs.
5. I copied the lifting boards from another plow. Just standing on the shoulders of a giant. They are 2X4's on hinges. Going forward they support the weight of the plow.

Yes! Finally a hitch plow with auto lift when you pull forward. I had the exact same idea, and I'm glad to see it functioning as I imagined! Incredible!

I have to admit the autolift was copied from another KZread plow. Get out in your garage and build an improved version!

I have this plow type for my golf cart but had a rope to lift it when backing up. I'm going to try this auto lift ASAP.
The flip-up lifters, smart detail.

Lol, that's awesome! From present and past, the showing of how human ingenuity is created from annoyed humans looking for solutions threw engineering. Still not enough today considering we shouldn't have to look for solutions. I am just appreating your engineering! Brilliant!

It would be super good if you can add some thick PVC round pipe at the bottoms of the back drag legs you made, this is a great idea!
great job! Besides the plow how does the prius do in the snow ? Longtime 2009 owner and just bought some Blizzaks for my first snow season.

what if you put rollers just on the back edges of the lift mechanism so it doesn't drag at all?

There has to be some drag so the lifters will grab onto the surface a bit and lift the plow up.

I guess that's easier than it looks thanks to the rear camera :D

A rear camera would be nice. That Prius does not have one.
